Music Trivia - The only band to hold this record

Post by moxham123 »

To go along with Frank's music trivia question.

Only one "Band" in music history has even achieved this feat. What band holds the record for placing five albums simultaneously in the top 20 on the Billboard Pop Album Chart, an accomplishment that has never been repeated and four of those albums were in the Top 10 simultaneously?

I know this one from my radio days. The Kingston Trio way back in 1959.

May want to check your facts.

In 1966, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass sold over 13 million recordings were sold, outselling the Beatles. That same year, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized that Alpert set a new record by placing five albums simultaneously in the top 20 on the Billboard Pop Album Chart, an accomplishment that has never been repeated. In April of that year, four of those albums were in the Top 10 simultaneously.

I swear I remember reading in "The Bible" (For the uninitiated, in radio tems, what we call "Billboard's Book Of Top 40 Hits") that the Kingston Trio did it in December 1959. Wish I had that book now.

Kevin, the question was for five albums. From looking at what you put, the Kingston Trio only four?

True, Frank, but my memory of reading the Billboard book told me that their album "Stereo Live" was still in the Top 20 when their next four records hit the top 10. All four subsequent albums went to #1, by the way.

That is interesting. Hopefully you can find the book to confirm it. I would be interested in knowing for sure.

Edit: I just looked up the album and it was actually called Stereo Concert. It was a live album that came out in 1959. It didn't say anything about consecutive albums in the top 20 or 10 though.
