PS I don't know many of you because I took a 14 year sabbatical, but there seem to be a lot of great RP'ers out there that I hope to get to meet sooner or later!

Is Bob still using that old Teisco (I think)? I have cool pics of Forces doing the 3 guitar thing and a 24-year-old Bob Gates playing on what looks like a Teisco.

I'm very impressed by how many non-bassists have chimed in on this thread! I don't think there's a "defacto" model for the number of guitarists a band should have...a strong musician will show through regardless of how many other people are standing on stage (case in point: Steve Harris in the triple-guitar version of 'maiden).

I think that a key thing to remember is that successfully covering a song requires duplicating the instrumentation that was used in the original. Artists writing songs can choose to work with whatever instrumentation happens to be available (i.e. the Grimm wrote 1-guitar songs because we had 1 guitar player).

It can be disappointing to hear a touring live act that cannot duplicate its studio sound because of the lack of the instrumentation used in the recording.....bands such as STP, Motley Crue, and others have often sounded weak in concert due to the lack of entire rhythmic parts. Conversely, live shows can sometimes showcase the strength of bass parts that you would never hear in the recordings due to layers of rhythm guitar....Doug Pinnick of King's X, for example, does a great job of covering the rhythmic end of things live despite the lack of studio rhythm tracks.

Kind of makes you wonder why they don't let some of these bass dudes shine on the recordings a bit more if they can carry it live...but then, I'm biased:)

That's what I've been saying for years! I think that many bands overproduce their albums, and then they wind up being a disappointment when they play live. I know that it's been common practice to use "ghost" musicians on recordings, but it seems to be the trend now to use "ghost" musicians playing live. I've heard many stories from legitimate sources that many of our favorite bands hire an extra guitar player to stand back stage and play parts. I don't know about you guys, but when I heard that, I'm very disappointed.

Okay... this is a cool thread for the most part I really like having two guitars basically because I'm a rhythm guitarist.... hacking at pussy leads that get the job done in a cover band that basically plays the easiest stuff that noone wants to play anymore because it's so easy! and for anyone that's seen me play lead... you know what I mean!! I'm okay with it because the only thing that matters is that you love doin what you're doin, and people enjoy what you're doin. I can honestly say, I (we) have accomplished that.

Having two guitars gives hacks like me some breathing room (covers my mistakes) and as someone mentioned before, when you're using alternate voicings I think it makes the sound fuller. Plus, there are alot of times that an additional guitar fills in the bass... my opinion.

As far as the 4 piece band thing goes, I'm just havin' a blast with my bro's, playing music. We all know we're a bunch of hacks (except the deathmaster.... shhhh, don't ruin it for him ) but we love playing! If I got paid for every freebie bene we do... I'd have a lot more cash at the end of the year. It's a hobby for us and we love it, that's why we do it.

Besides..... as far as "gods", rhythm guitarists with sex appeal, and lead singers that get all the chicks go, I'm all that and more! I just humbly play it down so as not to embarrass everyone else on the scene . Hell. I could do it all alone.... I'm just not sure how many people would come out to see me play with myself.... I'd much rather do it with 3 of my best friends!!

I'd love to see those pics! We (the band) just got to see some videos of The Front in action in 1986. Man we were all so pretty back then!!!

Personally, I like to jam some and then get really fucked up, and not go to bed till 7Am, oops sorry, already did that!

a few have mentioned that the second guitarist can also play some harmony leads. Yeah.

My favoite bands, Allman Brothers, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden are loaded with two guitars playing harmony leads.

Felix and the Canes are the shit, but when Dick Kos joins in occasionally, oh the harmonies those brothers can create.

The Flame Sky are a great local band that also play many harmony guitar parts.

From the guitarist perspective, I’ve been in bands where I was the lone gun and where I had another player. With ALL THINGS considered, I’d rather be the lone gun. After all, soap operas are always imminent in a rock band, and another member just adds to that likelihood.

I like it both ways. One guitar, two guitars. It all depends on what it is and how it comes out. Some of the greatest songs have a combination of both.

Also. I play Guitar, I do "Originals" and I do "Covers", And, I am not affraid to say that I SUCK !!! Egos are so un cool and unsatisfying it's not funny. I don't care if you are the best guitar player in the world. If you have the ego thinking that you are then you are not at all impressing me.

As a last note: I heard "Old Skool" play - And I agree with Rob on all factions of what he said about him. Including him being a GUITAR GOD !! He is a very good guitar player. Listening to him is like listening to my brother and dad; when I do don't I want to pick a guitar up again, because I know I will never get that good lol ..
