There appears to be two factors. Your point, regarding typing skills, is certainly one of them. The other is grammar. Unless a person is required to communicate well in his or her career, they tend to forget the grammar lessons that they learned in high school or college.

Have you encountered person that tries to fit an entire paragraph into one sentence? That one seems to be my peeve.

I make no secret that I love Rockpage. Like FutureBobby said, it's a community made up of all kinds.

Learning to coexist in any community is something we all must do every day in "real life." No one will agree with anyone all of the time. No one person will "get" all the jokes or find every tongue-in-cheek post amusing. The point is, people need to learn how to accept things that they don't like or that might annoy them and also accept the fact that different people have different viewpoints, different personalities, different senses of humor. It's called tolerance and it's essential for any community.

I have two main points:

• If a topic doesn't interest you or if you feel a thread or post is pointless, annoying and a waste of space and time, then skip it. It's simple. Don't read it. If I see a NASCAR or hunting thread, I generally don't read them. Same with TV. I don't watch CMT or Oxygen, but I'm not on a campaign to rid the airwaves of these networks. I know there are those out there who value the content. Who am I to say something is not valuable, simply because I don't get enjoyment from it?

• Don't feed the trolls. If you feel someone is grinding on you simply to get a charge out of you, silence is your best defense.

As for the characters, I'm enjoying them myself. The first thread where A. Bunker, Norm and Cliff appeared, I damn near fell off my chair.

The "general discussion" that takes place in here is just that, general discussion, and should be taken with a grain of salt. If the subject bores or annoys you, move on and create a thread that interests you.

Totally agree with you Urbs! I have a great sense of humor and as you might say a sick one as well! I have enjoyed some of the meaningless jargin thrown into the posts but it got really old really fast! Especially when you only have a few minutes to check things out and you have to search the thread for everything "on" topic. This is whay I had all but stopped visiting the site before....

It's funny how pissy people can get over something that is relatively harmless. For example, whenever Woofburger makes a post, there's a large contingent of posters who whine and bitch. Anyone should be able to realize that Woofburger is just a caricature, not a poster to be taken seriously. The same goes for Captain Grammar; I'm seeing people who aren't even having their grammar corrected practically flaming the guy. I even had my grammar corrected, and I thought it was funny (though he could have picked a better thread to do it in, instead of the LCB one).

But Rockpage is unique because many of us know each other in real life. On most large message boards, people are merely words on a screen. Things are more personal at Rockpage. And let's be real here. People like drama. When the Vocal Youth and Asinine threads were active, I was logging on a lot more.

Bert, bassist_25, I hear you. I myself had four years of Typing instruction and it's relatively easy for me unless my hands are being a literal pain. Then I'm a tad lax in my proficiency, or don't post much. Even though it was many moons ago, I placed in Typing II at a regional FBLA competition. The competition was timed of course, and except for missing the last word and the period, I would have won instead of being 4th. At least I wasn't 5th! :D I used to do a lot of it for a living, too. Captian Grammar is funny to me, I can't help it.
(, there were a lot of posts between the time I started typing my post, left and put laundry in the dryer and then finished it!)
The other "new" members are hilarious. Cliff's post on this thread slayed me...if anyone didn't find at least part of that funny,
please kindly remove the stick from your ass! :D

Let us pretend that the entire Rockpage community attended a Happy Hour. We may start the conversations with music-related topics, but I would doubt that we'd stay the course. Someone would start talking about their kids, tell an off-color joke, or make a political comment.

If Rockpage users were to strictly focus on the music, the forums would become dull and participation would suffer.

I agree with Beyond Reason. Im glad Jim is trying to clean things up as well.

Of course were not all gonna get along and agree, and not everything is going to be music related. Yesterday 5 of 16 threads were music related. It wouldnt be so bad if the ratio were reversed.

Now we have Captain Grammar and the whole other cast of characters to add to the mix. Superman thinks we should all just drink the kool-aid. Why do we have to read a bunch of off-topic CRAP to get to the meat of the original thread. According to superman, we should just stop when a thread is hijacked and move on - or wait - tolerate it. Yeah.

Its totally disrespectful, to hijack a thread such as the PLCB thread. Thats a serious subject that affects a lot of the members of the Rockpage community - that kind of crap should NOT be tolerated. While this Grammar character may be funny to some of you, consider someone who doesnt have the best typing or grammer skills, but who has something of value to say. By constantly being corrected or being made fun of, that person may stop posting. Thats wrong and thats sad.

This is a MUSIC FORUM....not Comedy Central Page, or Meet the Press Page. Yes, its general discussion that include politics, sports and all the other random crap threads. Its getting away from the spirit of Rockpage when 30% of the threads on "general discussion" are music related. Why not start a "Random Crap Discussion" for all those who enjoy the non-music stuff and turn this into "General Music Discussion" for those of us who just want the music aspect of the site.

I miss all the good music discussions that use to be common place here. Now they are a rare occurance. I miss a lot of the rockpagers who rarely post anymore too. Im not even gonna mention all the mean-spirited, antagonistic, bickering and flaming on here....some of you should be ashamed. I bet you wouldnt act that way face to face with each other - why do it here.

Restore Rockpage to what it once was.

Flame away....

i think that people who get on here to be fucking morons...the "characters" need the fuckin boot. If it doesnt happen, rockpage is just going to turn into another Vocal Youth. I dont want that, and i dont think that anyone else here does.

i agree with nightcrawler on one thing, if this is such a hot button debate maybe we should separate the forums. i enjoy reading posts on here whether they are music related or not and i have laughed my ass off at many of the non music related posts. but some people seem to have a problem w/ laughing so maybe we should make a separate forum for non musical stuff. i think maybe most of us take it for granted that this forum is entitled 'general discussion' so we discuss things generally. i know this post will probably just be written off since i'm more than likely labeled a troll for inciting a riot in the 'assinine thread' but i really enjoy being on rockpage and hearing what the other local musicians are doing and where certain people stand on certain issues, i just really think that it is trivial to argue over whether the general discussion forum should be for random banter or soley for musical discussion. separate the forums, if all you want is musical discussion make a forum for that and make a forum for the rest of us that just like to talk and laugh and have a good time. i for one would visit both forums but i think it is unnecessary.

I do not support or condone thread hijacking. If you are going to reference something I've said, please read the words I type and respond accordingly.
BadDazeRob wrote:• If a topic doesn't interest you or if you feel a thread or post is pointless, annoying and a waste of space and time, then skip it.
This means if you see a thread (all must have a title before they can be entered into the forum) and you think it's ridiculous or of little interest to you, then don't read it.

It's a TOTALLY DIFFERENT situation when a thread is hijacked and that, as JP has explained, is being monitored. However, it is pretty easy in most cases to decide whether a comment within a thread is going to be insightful or destructive simply by looking at the avatar and name next to it, especially if you're a veteran member of Rockpage.

Steve, if you truly miss the "good music discussions that use to be common place here," then start some. If you don't like the music discussion to crap discussion ratio, do something to change it by adding to the value of the content instead of bitching about the content.

PS: "Drinking the Kool-Aid" implies giving up free thought and conforming to someone else's ideals. I NEVER said submit to any poster's will or subscribe to anyone's philospohy. All I'm saying is if you don't like ESPN, turn the channel to FX or Spike. Every thread has the potential for being a great "station." Of course, if you go to a thread and don't like what you see, change the "channel" or, better yet, start a new one.

There are already too many Jerry Fallwells in this world.

This is a huge part of the problem ... too many people who can only look straight ahead, there is no left or right ...

This has been discussed before and it was recommended that the "Dean Martins" of the forum go to "Tech Sector" or some other to discuss specific, music-related topics when they don't want commentary from the peanut gallery.

Or better yet, Ron could create a category called the, "No-Laugh Zone" where only the most serious and straight faced people are permitted.

I personally try to find humor in almost every aspect of life (except for death of our fellow man). It makes getting out of bed at 6 a.m. every day all the easier. I've never understood those who take offense at levity ... remove the broomsticks from the orfices, people ...

In the second sentence, you've inverted your "l" and "e" in "myself" which is more than likely a simple typo, unless of course, you've had four years of typing instruction.

In addition, "typing" is not a proper noun, so it is improper to capitalize it, unless it is the first word of a sentence. As a matter of fact, none of the following qualifies as a proper noun, so all should be lower case: "Post," (which you were using as a verb anyway) "Regional," (it's not used as a proper name of a specific competition, which makes it an adjective) "Posts," "Post," "Laundry," "Members," "Post" or "Thread."

You're welcome.

Thank you, Captain Grammar. Yes, it was a simple typo. Everyone makes them, even you. Four years is shocking to you? 9th through 12th Grade, Typing I, Typing II and I can't recall what the last two classes were called. They involved proper office procedure, further typing instruction, as well as the proper use of all manner of office equipment. This included the dreaded Dictaphone and Mimeograph. (I'm feeling quite ancient!) The typewriters used way back then were NEW IBM Selectrics. We hadn't yet heard of "Word Processing". I do seem to have a propensity for capitalizing words I believe to be deserving of some kind of recognition no matter what they are, don't I? I apologize and will try very hard to resist that urge in the future.
