Former Bad Company singer Brian Howe R.I.P.

Howe passed away Wednesday (May 6) at his home in Florida after suffering cardiac arrest. He had a history of heart issues, having previously had a heart attack in 2017.

The singer was reportedly involved in a road traffic accident in Florida at the end of April, in which he suffered broken ribs.

Howe fronted Bad Company between 1986 and 1994 and provided vocals on hit albums including "Fame and Fortune", "Dangerous Age", "Holy Water", and "Here Comes Trouble". Those albums sold well and spawned quite a number of hit songs. He also recorded on Ted Nugent's "Penetrator" album as well as some solo efforts.

Little Richard R.I.P.

Little Richard, a founding father of rock and roll whose fervent shrieks, flamboyant garb, and joyful, gender-bending persona embodied the spirit and sound of that new art form, died Saturday. He was 87. The musician’s son, Danny Penniman, confirmed the pioneer’s death to Rolling Stone, but said the cause of death was unknown.

Starting with “Tutti Fruttiâ€ in 1956, Little Richard cut a series of unstoppable hits â€" “Long Tall Sallyâ€ and “Rip It Upâ€ that same year, “Lucilleâ€ in 1957, and “Good Golly Miss Mollyâ€ in 1958 â€" driven by his simple, pumping piano, gospel-influenced vocal exclamations and sexually charged (often gibberish) lyrics. “I heard Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, and that was it,â€ Elton John told Rolling Stone in 1973. “I didn’t ever want to be anything else. I’m more of a Little Richard stylist than a Jerry Lee Lewis, I think. Jerry Lee is a very intricate piano player and very skillful, but Little Richard is more of a pounder.â€

Bonnie Pointer, who became a star as part of Grammy-winning group the Pointer Sisters, died on Monday at age 69. No cause of death has been announced.

"It is with great sadness that I have to announce to the fans of The Pointer Sisters that my sister, Bonnie died this morning," Anita Pointer said in a statement. "Our family is devastated, on behalf of my siblings and I and the entire Pointer family, we ask for your prayers at this time."

"Bonnie was my best friend and we talked every day," Anita continued. "We never had a fight in our life. I already miss her and I will see her again one day."

Bonnie and her sister June were the founders of The Pointers in 1969 before evolving to the Pointer Sisters with the addition of Anita. In 1972, sister Ruth became the fourth just in time for the release of their self-titled debut album.

Bonnie and Anita wrote their country crossover hit "Fairytale" two years later that earned the sisters their first Grammy Award. After Bonnie left the group, the Pointer Sisters also won Grammys for "Jump (For My Love)" and "Automatic."

In 1977, Bonnie decided to split from her sisters for a solo career signing with Motown Records and releasing three studio albums before retiring. She married label producer Jeffrey Bowen to whom she was married from 1978 until 2016.

Bobby Lewis, singer of “Tossin’ & Turnin’, died on April 28 after contracting pneumonia. The news was not widely circulated in late April. He was 95.

Lewis was born in Indianapolis and raised in an orphanage, eventually moving to a foster home in Detroit at age 12. When he was 14, he ran away from home and began to perform as a singer, eventually moving to New York. After spending some time on Mercury Records, he was convinced by singer-songwriter Ritchie Adams to record a song he’d co-written as a one-off for the smaller Beltone label.

That song was 1960’s “Tossin’ & Turnin’,â€ a kinetic R&B rave-up as restless as the insomnia Lewis described in its lyrics, which exploded commercially in 1961. The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 10th of that year, staying there for seven weeks â€" an unusually long reign in the chart’s early history â€" and ultimately topping Billboard’s year-end Hot 100 for 1961. In 2018, it landed at No. 36 on Billboard's all-time Hot 100, fourth-highest of any song from the ’60s.

Lewis’ time in the mainstream was relatively brief. After scoring one more top 10 hit ("One Track Mind" No. 9) that October, he only hit the Hot 100 twice more, and never again made the top 40. “Tossin’ & Turnin' endured in the cultural memory, though, in large part due to its prominent use in two hit comedies of the ’70s, both set in the early ’60s: American Graffiti (1973) and Animal House (1978).

Charlie Daniels R.I.P.

Charlie Daniels, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame best known for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," died Monday morning after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. He was 83.

As a session musician, he played on three of Bob Dylan’s albums â€" including the revolutionary “Nashville Skylineâ€ â€" as well as recordings for Ringo Starr and Leonard Cohen.

In 1974, he launched the first “Volunteer Jam, a regular all-star concert that has continued for nearly 50 years. Daniels joined the Grand Ole Opry in 2008, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Judy Dyble, Fairport Convention singer, R.I.P.

The north London-born musician had been suffering from a long-term illness, according to her agent.

Dyble left Fairport in 1968 and went on to join Trader Horne and launch a solo career, but continued to appear at several of the band's reunion events.

A tribute from Fairport's Simon Nicol said she was "kind and gentle, shy but hilarious, wistful but focused".

He added: "Judy was ever a childhood friend to me first and foremost... She surrounded herself with loveliness, loved her kids and grandchildren, and adored her rescued greyhounds. Farewell, lovely. x"

Dyble also sang in guitarist Robert Fripp's early band Giles, Giles and Fripp.

A statement from Dyble's agent described her as one of the "pioneers of the English folk rock scene".

It said she had died after a "long illness borne with great courage", adding her family "would like to thank her fans for their messages and good wishes on social media over the last few weeks".

Big Big Train frontman David Longdon, who had been recording an album with Dyble which is set to be released later this year, also paid tribute to his "dear friend".
