FENDER FRETLESS JAZZ MOSES GRAPHITE ODDBALL

Post by MOONDOGGY »

I wanted the Fender J tone and feel, but really didn't want a standard Jazz bass. So I assembled this oddball.

I started with a lefty Warmoth body that had a Fender Power Jazz Special neck on it. I replaced this with a righty Moses Graphite fretless neck with fretboard extension.

Being a lefty body strung righty, the upper fret access was poor. I removed some wood from what is the lower bout to gain about an extra two fret stretch. I also removed some material from the pickguard to make it fit.

I refinished the original transparent orange body because the clearcoat used by the previous owner never fully cured. And since the ash had such nice grain, I wanted to show it off with a Ceruse style finish ala F Bass and Roscoe basses. However, it didn't work like I thought, so I left it at trans black with textured grain.

I added a Kahler fully adjustable fixed bridge and recessed the base plate into the body.

I added Schaller ultralight semi-open tuners.

The bass originally had string thru body w/ ferrules, but the Kahler bridge doesn't allow for this. So the holes are there but not used.

I refinished the bridge, control plate, and jack plate in black.

I relocated the jack using a strat-style jack plate on the back of the body. However, I messed up mounting this and it is mounted upside down, rather than flush.

And in an effort to keep the knobs from turning by my arm, I made wooden domed knobs. They don't work as well as planned. I had plans to add slide potentiometers and a 3-band preamp to replace the rotary pots. I will throw these slide pots in with the bass if you want to add them.

Lastly, I installed a new set of white active EMG J pickups.

It plays excellent and sounds even better. It's a very unique fretless sound. It's currently strung with black Rotosound flats which are not included. It will be strung with roundwounds, which sound awesome. And the fretboard is great for warding off roundwound marks.

I'm asking $500.

Dan, you don't happen to have a Sadowsky Metro 5 you'd be hoping to part with, do you?

I just found this reply notification in my spam folder. Sorry for the delayed response. To answer your question, no. I don't have a Sadowsky. I wish I could say I had one of those in my aresenal but I've had no such luck. I haven't bought a bass in a few years and the last one was a Squier Pbass! I'm down to my Spector Euro5, Spector BOB4, Squier P, and this fretless

Now looking to part it out. Before I make separate threads for each of the items, I'll post them here first:

1. Moses Graphite Fretless bass neck, extended fingerboard, side dot markers, standard Fender neck pocket. Will include neck plate, screws, and string tensioner. Excellent condition. Little to no string wear on fingerboard. These are $350ish new.
$225

2. EMG active J Set, White, w/ controls, jack, and battery clip. These are $160 new.
$100

3. Schaller BML (BM Light) 4-in-line tuning keys. These tuners are half-open type and are very light weight. If you've got a bass with neck dive, these will help! And no screws needed to mount. Similar to Sperzels where you just need small holes to lock them in place. Excellent condition. These are $100+ new.
$65

4. Warmoth bastardized lefty Jazz bass body. 2-piece Ash. Will include red tortoise shell pickguard, jack plate, and control plate. Note: the bridge area is routed for a Kahler 6-way adjustable fixed bridge plate.
$30

5. Kahler 6-way adjustable fixed bridge. This was originally chrome, but has been lightly sanded and sprayed black. It was then clear coated. It's not the prettiest piece of hardware, but it is an awesome bridge that offers a LOT of adjustability in string height, string spacing, and intonation. New: $60+.
$25.

6. Dome knobs - made of oak, stained black, and clear coated. Press-fit to most standard pot shafts. Includes 3.
$5

7. Slide (linear) potentiometers. These were purchased to get rid of rotary pots on this bass. They are the same value as the EMG pots (I'll find out exactly what that is later). I believe they are linear taper, not audio taper. I have about 5.
$5
