"I like beans," is a Rockpage meme from a few years ago that's often invoked whenever a thread has become asinine, such as this one right here. I'm sorry that it doesn't appeal to everybody's educated and highbrow Internet forum sensibilities.
Unfortunately, though, a few years ago, Rockpage got into a rather academic discussion about social systems theory, and the board was split right down the middle between Weber's interpretation of theological institutions and their influence on societal evolution and Luhmann's thinking on social autopoietic systems and transfer of knowledge through communication. There were even a few advocates of Giddens' structuration theory in the mix, such as myself. Songsmith was the lone post-structuralist in the mix, dropping Focault and Derrida quotes left and right. If I recall correctly, the discussion really centered on a contention between anti-positivist and post-positivist ontology when applied to macro-level social science epistemological empiricism. It got quite bloody. People were slamming each other's bands, threatening to show up at gigs and beat the shit out of each other, just because they thought that OLS regression was the best statistical tool for assessing longterm social trends. JP had to keep dropping the ban hammer. I remember that like seven people got banned from Rockpage in one week. Finally, Stumblefingers (he was known as "Jimi Hatt" back then) had to solicit the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Sevices to come in and calm us all down and open some lines of dialogue.
Thankfully, we've pretty much recovered from that incident, but you do sometimes still see the scars. Now, to avoid ever such a thing, we primarily talk about our love of beans and the best way to shave.
