All very nice, you forgot having as much time to waste on Rockpage as I do. . "Dr." John also teaches at PSU Altoona, has a finely-tuned resume, and is supposedly oft-quoted among his peers. I wasn't intimidated by him, either. Cross your fingers and hope there are no advances in the field anytime soon, because I'm certain to point them out.
Incidentally, see the keyboard you're typing on? Pretty much every day, I use it to make you seem a little less intelligent than you think you are.
Use your big, honkin' brain and tell me which creates more electrical power, wind turning a windmill, or wind blowing, not turning anything? Which creates more electricity, sunlight striking a photo-voltaic cell, or sunlight striking anything else? Again, the sun will keep shining, and the wind will keep blowing, whether you harness it or not. I say harness it, you say keep things the way they are, and watch the rest of the world roll on by us. I stand by my opinion, having recognized that is an opinion, and fully comprehending the difference.
Yep, thats about what I thought you would say.

I say you couldn't find your ass if your hands were in your back pockets.

BTW, I have time to waste because I made myself a member of the "idle rich".

Twice as popular!

Uh-oh. The rightwing media will want to spin this... But Fox News is fair! And balanced!

Sonofabitch! Okay, so let's see how Fox News treats it:

http://nation.foxnews.com/occupy-oaklan ... e-together

Why would Fox News be so harsh?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJgWdfZqDj0

Whoa, has Fox News ever done anything like this before?

But they're the most popular political show on TV, right?

Oh, apparently, folks have started figuring out who's causing all the problems, who's helping them, and now they think it's time to fix that:

Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Calif., announced his retirement from Congress this afternoon -- and he issued a scathing parting shot at President Obama's track record on his way out.

In a statement explaining his decision, Cardoza, a leader of the centrist Blue Dog Coalition, said he was "dismayed" by the administration's "failure to understand and effectively address the current housing foreclosure crisis."

"Home foreclosures are destroying communities and crushing our economy, and the Administration's inaction is infuriating," Cardoza said.

Maybe we should ask our wunderkind Herr Hawk to investigate this allegation by a fellow Democrat about his leader.

What I don't get Is that I support unions, the right for laborers to band together to bargain while you support everyone the Koch brothers support. They want to take YOUR job away. They and their political cohorts want to take away your union, take away your ability to bargain. Then they want to privatise everything (like prisons). The way to save the government money is to privatise the prisons. Hire a bunch of part time guards with no benefits and pay them minimum wage.

You may think your union hasn't done anything for you. That's because it's already been done. You make a decent wage and benefits. If the private prison guards (currently) make as much as you it's because the union set the standard. That will be gone. The standard will be minimum wage.

Now you want to vote to take your job away? Give it to the private sector and give it to minimum wage earners? Joe and Jeff will tell you that YOU are big government. Be carefull what you wish for...and who you vote for.

Think it won't happen ? Stop looking at the dominoes standing in front of you. Look behind you. The dominoes are falling toward you.

Joe I think your bullying attempts make you an asshole. The constant techniques you use with references to Nazis is lower than a snake. I feel sorry for you and pity you.

You are the typical cyber bully as described below. Low self esteem Joe ? YES, the Nazi references fit the typical bully tactic. And low self esteem, a strong need to dominate, attempts at feeling empowered all describe you.

References to my German heritage and someone's height ? Just how low is you self esteem that you need to boost it that way? Get some professional help.

Am I bullying back at you ? No, just not taking your shit and explaining why you are the way you are so perhaps you can grow up.

Let's learn a little about you.

Bullying behavior may include name calling, verbal or written abuse, coercion. Bullies may behave this way to be perceived as popular or tough or to get attention. They may bully out of jealousy or be acting out because they themselves are bullied.

U.S. National Center for Education Statistics suggests that bullying can be classified into two categories: Direct bullying, and indirect bullying (which is also known as social aggression)

He also suggests that social aggression or indirect bullying is characterized by threatening the victim into social isolation. This isolation is achieved through a wide variety of techniques, including spreading gossip, refusing to socialize with the victim,...and criticizing the victim's manner of dress and other socially-significant markers (including the victim's race, religion, disability, sex, or sexual preference, etc.).

Ross outlines other forms of indirect bullying which are more subtle and more likely to be verbal, such as name calling, the silent treatment, arguing others into submission, manipulation, gossip/false gossip, lies, rumors/false rumors, staring, giggling, laughing at the victim, saying certain words that trigger a reaction from a past event, and mocking.

Research indicates that adults who bully have personalities that are authoritarian, combined with a strong need to control or dominate. It has also been suggested that a prejudicial view of subordinates can be a particularly strong risk factor.

Further studies have shown that envy and resentment may be motives for bullying. Research on the self-esteem of bullies has produced equivocal results. While some bullies are arrogant and narcissistic, others can use bullying as a tool to conceal shame or anxiety or to boost self esteem: by demeaning others, the abuser him/herself feels empowered.

Researchers have identified other risk factors such as depression and personality disorders, as well as quickness to anger and use of force, addiction to aggressive behaviors, mistaking others' actions as hostile, concern with preserving self image, and engaging in obsessive or rigid actions. A combination of these factors may also be causes of this behavior. In one recent study of youth, a combination of antisocial traits and depression was found to be the best predictor of youth violence, where as video game violence and television violence exposure were not predictive of these behaviors

It is often suggested that bullying behavior has its origin in childhood. As a child who is inclined to act as a bully ages, his or her related behavior patterns will often also become more sophisticated. Schoolyard pranks and 'rough-housing' may develop into more subtle, yet equally effective adult-level activities such as administrative end-runs, well-planned and orchestrated attempts at character assassination, or other less obvious, yet equally forceful forms of coercion.

Aren't you going to ask me if I have a degree in economics, "Dr." John? Posting a HEAVILY-padded resume, as usual, perfectly illustrated my point. That zooming sound is my anecdote, going over your head. I'm not allowed to post my resume, or Baby Huey gets all bent out of shape, and anyway, I don't need to. You have posted your OPINION. You cannot say with any specificity that there will be no advances in technology, and you certainly cannot ignore the economy of scale. You STILL haven't addressed the inexorable fact that the wind and sun are there to be exploited whether you exploit them or not. You STILL haven't addressed the inefficiencies of fossil-fuel, from the internal combustion engine to the heat that goes up your chimney, to the ash they haul way from power-plants. Nor have you mentioned the toll paid locally for Pittsburgh's acid rain, or other environmental considerations.
I'm not sure where you get the idea that I'm supposed to kiss your ass, but that's not going to happen in my lifetime. You're entitled to nothing from me but my reply, and I happen to control that, as well. Sorry if that frustrates you and joe, but tough titty.
Obviously, you are allowed to post your opinion here. So am I. Let me rephrase that: I am allowed to post my opinion as well. Put another way, My opinion is also permissible. Perhaps this will help you understand: After posting your opinion, I have the ability to rebutt with my own. It is my opinion that modern talkshow-flavored conservatism is an inability to distinguish between opinion and fact. Thank you for corroborating that.

No Johnny. I was just going to comment that you missed your calling. Except for a degree in Political Science or some other major that is useless to society, you have all of the qualifications to be a clueless politician.

Aside from being clueless, and having no real depth of knowledge, you are very capable at finding and using key buzzwords and phrases. Once armed with these key buzzwords, you can bullshit your way through most conversations and maybe even impress people who are equally clueless.

These are the qualities needed by the clueless politician to stay employed, but you really need that sheepskin.

So, at this time, I'd like to bestow upon you this Master of Crap degree from the College of Bullshit:

OK everybody, I am always interested in major breakthroughs in engineering and physics, so please keep me apprised of any groundbreaking developments of these:

Shafts & Axles
Bearings
Gears
Enclosures (boxes)
Columns
Wire
Magnets
Relays
Weldments
Blades, Vanes & Sails
Basic PLCs (theres a new key buzzword!)

Since these components are all quite new to civilization, we should expect major breakthroughs for them in the near future because our President is funding it and, well, Johnny said so.

Warning: This post contains facetious and sarcastic remarks. You will have better luck watching grass grow.

Seems that way. Then there are a few other groups. The people who's job it is to actually improve products, usually engineers, and people who can't find their asses with their hands in their back pockets. The latter often has members in both "R" and "D" groups (pun intended), depending on the industry and uses wishful thinking and pie in the sky to formulate an opinion to justify government funding. (See: Al Gore)

The former makes a calculated estimate of product improvement potential based on its maturity and its adaptability to new technology.

Mature mechanical and electrical products have very little improvement potential, so any improvement will be incremental as opposed to "breakthrough". Incremental product improvements result in minimal or no savings in manufacturing costs, because sometimes an improvement is just an improvement, or "imp" as we call it in the industry.

Its amazing how some people just cannot grasp this concept.

I will print and display my new degree with all the honor and gravity with which it was intended. (cue Pomp And Circumstance)

My acceptance speech:

"Students... faculty... alumni... welcome.
I believe it was famed songwriter, Gerry Goffin who asked the one question that has perplexed all of mankind, since the dawn of time:
Who put the Bomp in the Bomp-shu-bomp-shu-bomp? Who put the Ram in the Rama-lama-ding-dong?
Today, as I stand before you all, after many years of exhaustive research... after many sleepless nights... I can now say without fear of contradiction... that the originator of both Bomp and Ram... is undercoverjoe.
When in the course of human events, one needs an ideology that turns 180 degrees depending on which party is in control, joey can summon up the conservative powers of amnesia and self-importance and produce a holier-than-thou response, or a totally-irrelevant and obtuse epithet. Armed with misinformation gleaned from talkshows and blogs, modern conservatives can laser in on whatever they want to hear, ignoring all other pertinent information. Nobody works as hard as them, except the people they are told works harder than them. Nobody is more intelligent, and they are endowed by God Himself with entitlement to whatever authority they desire.
Because corporate control is always better than democracy, todays commencement ceremonies are brought to you by Enron, British Petroleum, and Madoff Investments.
In closing, all gays, brown people, non-Christians, women and poor people should now exit in an orderly fashion because you're not getting anything from me, and the rest of you... BACK TO WORK! Statist welfare losers!"

I'll treasure this moment always, and will be using my entitlement to authority at every opportunity.

"The former makes a calculated estimate of product improvement potential based on its maturity and its adaptability to new technology."

How are you gonna adapt new groundbreaking technology to a gear, a magnet, a shaft, et. al.?

Do you even think that companies even bother to spend R&D money to save 10 cents on a $10 shaft or gear? The 1st thing we do when looking at product improvement is identify the cost drivers and concentrate on the biggest ones. One look at a windmill parts list and its evident that the only significant cost driver for a windmill is SIZE. Not much you can do about that besides innovative manufacturing methods and ramping up production with them.

Industrial windmills will never come close to the production numbers that are typical of consumer products. While consumer products might number in the millions or tens of millions for a given company, industrial windmills will only reach tens of thousands--if they are lucky. At that quantity, it is actually cheaper for some parts to be fabricated from more mundane methods such as CNC machines than it is to spend a lot of money on tooling to do one-shot high volume methods like die presses or forging.

I believe that in time, smaller windmills for individual use will be a cost effective form of wind energy. If you wanna buy a windmill, that's fine.

Just don't make me pay for it while the President holds a gun to my head.
