Anyone ever work for...

Smith Transport or know anyone who has? Non-driver position. Good/bad? Comments? Pay rate? It would be helpful. Thanks.

i used to work in logistics for a company that dealt with smith transport a lot. the staff at smith always seemed to be very happy...non disgruntled. but, there's only so much you can gather about someone from a phone conversation.

good luck if you're looking

worked in the trailer shop for about 6 months. 65 hours a week and they didn't pay overtime. Barry Smith found some loophole that got him out of paying time and a half if you worked on the trucks/trailers. Other than that I really liked it.

I interviewed for a job there and I know at least at that time ( 2 years ago) they were not paying worth a crap for the type of work they wanted you to do. I have known a few people that work there and have never heard much positive about the place.

Smith Transport is now owned 51% by US Xpress. It seems that the company has stabilized a good bit. Most of the ppl I deal with seem reasonably happy to be at work...

The trucking industry does not have to pay overtime.

He's also fond of hiring family. (another loophole where he doesn't have to pay OT). I used to date one of his cousin's.

I heard he financed the upstart of his company by loading the truck tires with coke and pot for distribution. I'd love to be the guy who changed tires for them.

Ha. A blown tire could create quite a frenzy on the interstate.

I don't know about that but if it wasn't for Appleton Papers,Smith Transport wouldn't be as big as they are today.

i worked there almost 10 years ago. mechanics made average 13 per hour. trailer shop was about 10 per hour. mandatory 48 hrs per week. no overtime. we worked thanksgiving new years and everything else. you work weekends. your days off could be tues and wend or mon tues or whatever. only ones getting any time off on weekends where the guys that have been there quite a while and it was only sat or sun. not both. if i where you i would keep looking unless you really need it or make it a temp job. never long term. the only ones that got decent treatment where the dispatchers. this was almost 10 years ago. i did hear that the hours got worst but i dont know for sure. what is funny is that the wash bay crews where making as much at the mechanics because they where getting paid piece rate. i also heard that they did away with that and just pay them straight time now. cant confirm that one tho.
