Radiohead = overrated

I find it strange to think that the Stones could be considered over rated. I mean that is like saying that Alaska is not really a state. The stones are what they are, history shows what they are and what they have done. Now not liking them is a different story....

If you want to hit the billboard charts it looks like you have to appeal to younger people. There was a thread about Dream Theater hitting the top 40. Well they sold about 16,000 albums. That is about the same that they have always sold in their first week but the difference is that the number one seller only sold 76,000 instead of the 354,000 that use to mandate a number one spot.

Perspective wise the album "no strings attached" by N'Sync sold 2.4 million in its first week of release....That was in 2000, any N'Sync fans out there? Over Rated because so many people bought their album or because you don't like that kind of music?

Problem here is that a lot of people that were buying CD's and albums are not anymore....

I guess that means that the little girls get to say who is popular. I have a 14 year old daughter and she loves that Disney stuff as much as AC/DC...

AC/DC over rated? I mean by what standard? They are what they are....

I agree with Brian and think that we should all drink more and Scott is a wanker....Dude if I only played better drums I could get in that band with the fat old guys and we could perform the Jedi mind trip on all the drunk tatooed babes at the gigs....Life is too fucking short!

Any band that plays songs with soley the use of power chords and the guitar players couldn't play a solo if their life depended on it.

For example: Green Day

The Ramones

I don't see how they're overratted. They always admitted to not being very talented.

and they inspired many many kids to start their own band for that reason.

They were popular because they were simple and fun.

Overrated and Popular are 2 different things. I can see how people don't like them, but they are not overrated.

So there U go

So there you have it, some of us think U2, Springsteen, Ramones, Green Day are some of the over rated bands.

o⋅ver⋅rate

oʊvərˈreɪt/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [oh-ver-reyt]
Show IPA
Use over-rated in a Sentence
–verb (used with object), -rat⋅ed, -rat⋅ing.
to rate or appraise too highly; overestimate: I think you overrate their political influence.
Origin:
1580–90; over- + rate 1

Synonyms:
overpraise, overesteem, magnify.

So I guess my definition each band could be considered overated by anyone. For example If I love Dream Theater and you think thay are wankers the your opinion would be that I am over-rating them.

Yes?

haha i'm amused that people think the ramones are overrated. they only inspired COUNTLESS bands in various genres, played thousands of shows all over the world, did it on their own terms. i don't even think they had a gold or platinum record. mainstream success kind of dodged them. so i can't see how they were overrated.

anywho...

most 80's hair metal stuff
breaking benjamin
tool
disturbed
anything metalcore
most indie art fag rock
"edgy" suburban white rap (i.e. sage francis)

also, there are some local bands who are overrated (some of them completely suck)

but, i also say...like what you like. who cares what anyone says about what you like.

I think Kurt Cobain is over rated. I really like Nirvana I just don't think he was a good guitarist at all.

Ok,I waited for a few more threads before I posted.

The Ramones- Not over rated but very under appreciated. They opened a box that you can't put all the toys back in. And yes they have had gold and platinum records to their credit,it took awhile to sell them but sold them never the less.Long live Joey,Johnny,Dee Dee and Tommy not Marky. And to anybody who challenges the power of the Ramones needs to listen to "It's Alive" and they will definitely see.

U2- Love them or hate them, you CAN NOT deny the power they hold. Still the original 4. Not all their albums are great but more than not.Yeah Bono can be grating but the charity work and world awareness is second to none. Why? Because they have the money and resources to do so and have done so since the early 80's.

Overrated- Any band that makes more money than me

I've always thought that Nirvana was overrated, though I can't deny their impact on music. The Smashing Pumpkins are horribly overrated, I just don't get them and I really can't stand Billy Corgan's whiny voice. I also fine the White Stripes to be overrated. I don't see what the big deal about Jack White is.
Pour me another one, cause I'll never find the silver lining in this cloud.

NO WAY. WR was one of the best fusion bands ever. The lineup of players was staggering, and the gathered talent was immense. Sorry, Jack, I understand and respect your opinion, but I must disagree with it also.

Really? I think you all should look at what each band has done.. they were all picked to be in mainstream music for some reason..

Kurt Cobain wasnt a good guitar player sure... but do you realize how relevent their music was for the 90's.. regardless of talent.

Areosmith is one of the biggest bands in the world.. not because they out sell in record sales.. because they have been doing it.. they've been down that road and hard.. and its clean music.. call it adult contemporary for the squares that still have a lil rock n' roll left in them.

I consider acts like, U2, Areosmith, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Rod Stewert, The Stones.. and all shit that falls in there somewhere, to be adult Rock contemporary shit.. and shit like that is Time-less..

I like listening to a song and you cant guess what decade it was written in.

Like the talking heads.. psyco killer.. I had no idea that song was written in the late 70's.. I thought that song was a mid to late 80's song.

Music went from being the soundtrack of WHERE your from and WHO you are.. to being the soundtrack of WHEN you were.

Lynnard Skynnard is a band that sounds like WHERE they are from instead of WHEN they were.. to me at least

Ramones.. not overated at all.. its amazing what they did for themselves.
Everyone has heard one of their songs right? or at least heard of them..

To me.. regardless of talent.. that is a success.. they wrote good songs and they got them out there to the masses.

I feel that Metallica is WAY overated.. but again people really like them.. so they are a successful band.

Anymore ..being a musician.. i try to play in a style that more than one catagorie of people will give a listen.. I try to consider the majority..

So I try to write or play something that people from all genre's of music COULD get into.. it all depends on who the individual is of course.

Say for instance someone likes hard core O.G. Rap and thats all they like... chances are they're not gonna like queens of the stone age.

so....

People still like what they like.. dont get me wrong.. but I try to be a part of something where people can stand there and listen.. and say..hey thats a really good song.

That really is what its all about.. a good song

But I agree with most of you and the bands you are saying are overated..

NICKELBACK is the worst garbage ever.. they are just as gay as N'sync and britney spears.. POP music is the worst shit ever.

Whatever happened to good old Album oriented rock 'n roll.

I this it's amusing when posts like this get going and people argue back and forth about who's good and who's not so good...or overrated as the case may be. The very nature of the question makes this a matter of opinion. I think one of the most interesting things about human nature is that while (most) people worldwide may love music or art or science, they mean different things to different people. Think about the most horrible band or musician you can imagine and somewhere out there is a person who thinks they're awesome...and vice versa.

I also think it depends on what you mean by "overrated". Are we talking musical skill? Songwriting ability? Albums sold? Without clarification, these things also become a matter of opinion. Whether you agree with an opinion or not, I think we should all respect it.

I agree with Dark Soul on this. I see similarities between this dicussion and the thread about modern metal. It's the old adage about "one man's junk is another man's treasure" - one person's overrated band/artist is somebody else's favorite. It's all in what you like as an individual, and no two person's tastes are identical. In the metal thread, I agree that it's a generational issue; fans of older rock/music often have a tougher time accepting what their children and today's generation are listening to, and they end up sounding like their parents before them. Every generation has its musical flavors and identities.

Perhaps because I am exposed to such a wide range of musical flavors and styles through my work with Pennsylvania Musician and the "Homegrown Rocker," there is very little music out there that I can't accept listening to, particularly if it is done well. Some of the contrived, "manufactured" hit music on the pop charts I might consider overrated because I question the true inspiration behind some of it ($$$); but in general, I can accept mostly any form of music out there, and tend not to bust on artists or genres as a whole. If it's done well and has some genuine heart and soul behind it, I can appreciate it.

And I'd even go as far to call The Ramones pop. They were heavy on catchy hooks.
