its like beef sliced up real thin and has (from what i recall) green onion and stuff in it. Its cooked in some kinda sauce, not sure whats in it. Kinda salty but oh-so-good.

Think like cheese steak meat with sauce.

Yep, Ponderosa. $5 at Ponderosa and the chicken is better than PS. There's no steak, but I never liked chewing on those PS hockey puck ribeyes anyway.

None of us locals bother going to PS anymore--well, except for those I call professional eaters. Its not worth double the money.

fullthrottle666 wrote:Hoss's is sorely unappreciated i fear. best salad bar intown. you can't get that variety anywhere else locally for any price. you can add any entre you wish. lots of veggies and 4 soups with every entre. you can't do any better imo

ALL YOU CAN EAT
If you can live off rabbit food.

Go to Ponderosa and you get 95% of Hoss's rabbit food plus liver & onions, meatloaf, roast chicken, wings, potatoes, spagetti & meatballs, hot mixed & other vegetables and the irresistable chocolate pie (mmmmm). The macaroni & cheese even tastes good--where have you seen that on a buffet?

For the past 4 months, they sent out flyers with $5 lunch buffet coupons and a $5 coupon for the Sunday breakfast buffet that includes bottomless coffee & orange juice and cooked to order omelets. Of course, you get all that other artery clogging stuff like sausage, bacon, corned beef hash, sausage gravy, scrambled & red/green pepper eggs, french toast, doughnuts and...you guessed it...chocolate pie (mmmmmmmmm)

Yep, they have ice cream too.
"Big Ben's" salad bar is not that bad (not great) but can't compare to Hoss's great variety. Hoss's soups are far and away better. they now have four kind and they are of great quality. lots meat and vegetables in each.

How about Donnie Crums (now cooking at Al's Tavern) version of Gregs's Chicago Stuffed? Mmmmm.... "White" or "Red" with the sauce on top.... Donnie Crum should have his own pizza chain by now.. every time he touches dough it turns to instant yummy for da tummy....
OK, I have a Donnie Crum story about pizza. Worked with him for YEARS at Pizza Hut on Pl Valley Blvd. He made the pizzas of course. Great guy, great pizza maker. He puts EVERYTHING into it...check this out. So, one day a customer calls us who recently had a pizza delivered. " Do you have a guy working there named Donnie Crum?" "Why yes sir we do" "Oh OK we thought so because we found his name tag melted into the cheese on our pizza"
HaHaHa. Ask him about it, he'll remember it....

And for another restaurant recommendation, try the Athenian cafe or whatever across from Blair Orthopedic (near Capparella furniture) for authentic Greek. Love the chicken pita wraps, yum.

If you liked the pizza they served in most high school cafeterias, you will like their pizza. Its about the same with a little sliver of green pepper.
Altoona Hotel Pizza at one time was the best EVER... Of course that was about 16 owners ago.....

Now you have to go to Pelly's to get the best re-creation of Altoona Hotel Pizza.. or the OIP (old Thompsons Pharm) in Juniata, if Pellys is too far for you... But the real deal Altoona Hotel Pizza rules....

When he was cooking at Pellys I was there getting Chicago Stuffed's every week....
I used to cook at the Altoona Hotel when Jed owned it (96~97ish, Randy Rutherford did a regular solo gig there also) and man, I could tell you some kitchen stories...good as well as bad. I never really cared for pizza w/ American cheese, but the Clam Casino was the shit back then...mostly because I made it. Anyway, is that place still open? I think I will check it out here in the near future if it is... Also that place Sanchez mentioned sounds good.

OMG! Tim's American Cafe....yes! Their Buffalo Chicken Salad is HUUUUUUUUGE and absolutely delicious. Make sure you order the fries and cheese on top too...makes all the difference. Eastern Express in the Station Mall has the best Chinese in town. I find Altoona Hotel's pizza to be the sickest shit I've even eaten. I could literally only eat 2 bites of it. Yellow cheese on pizza? That's just nasty!!
