NEW FOOD THREAD

Post by DirtySanchez »

I didn't feel like diggin up the old one, but if you get a chance hit up SUKYE'S Korean/American BBQ Buffet. It's on the blvd. across the street from Perkins. The American BBQ is the best in town and The Spicy Pork bulgogi is AMAZING. The only downfall is they don't serve alcohol, but you're allowed to bring you're own. Prices aren't bad either Table top Buffet for 2 is like 22 bucks. Freshly cooked at your table!

Has anyone else eaten here? When I go in, It's usually empty or 1-2 other people. It's kind of a best kept secret (maybe not for the owners though  ). What are some other little known, but very good places to eat where it's not the same old Crap?

Altoona Hotel Pizza? Does it live up to the hype? Sounds fuckin' YUMMY!

I always drive by the Korean place. Always wondered about it, never looks like anyone is there... which can be a bit frightening.

I definitely have to check it out now.

Thanks for the heads up, I will check it out.

This is probably a bad time for this old joke, but with my twisted sense of humor, I can't stop myself.

What do you call a Korean with 2 dogs?

A rancher.

My favorite place is Fuji Japanese Steakhouse in The Galleria. Amazing hibachi steak.

There're a bunch of little places around here that're good. I haven't eaten at Granny's in FOREVER, but they're amazing! Tom & Joe's, Altoona across from City Hall, has a great little place as well! I eat there with my parents every so often. We all take turns treating. Their waitress Kim is a real whip, funny as Hell! Kinda sucks that they're mostly a morning place, but still... They have great food nonetheless, and I occasionally even get up before work and hit that place! There used to be a little Chinese place next to Weis by the mall, but they shut down. They had some good food though. The one in the shopping mall by what was Martin's, however, is still there, and has a decent buffet as well. King's used to be one of my faves, but it happens that every so often, their service sucks. Big Mouth's, by Wal-Mart, makes some excellent subs! One of my coworkers recommends Jethro's for great food, but I don't have an experience there yet

I can't think of any more right now, but if I find more Sanchez, I'll let you know dude

After living in this town all of my life, I finally did breakfast at Tom & Joe's for the first time in my life early last month. I was served by Kim the waitress, and had the best seat in the house, at the main counter behind where the main cook was slinging the eggs and bacon. What a show! Their T-shirts tell the story, "You can't pay for entertainment this good!" I plan to go back there sometime soon and try "The Mess!"

I went there for the first time a few months ago, myself. Pretty good, I must say. I can see why it's such a local institution. I'll be back!--->JMS

If you liked the pizza they served in most high school cafeterias, you will like their pizza. Its about the same with a little sliver of green pepper.

For some reason, I just cant get enough of the Jack Daniels stuff from Fridays. The ribs used to be awesome, but theyre only about half decent anymore. The shrimp kick the most ass, I could eat those all day. Its the fuggin glaze man!

I tried Great China Restaurant in the Ivyside Plaza near Penn State Altoona earlier this week. They have a daily lunch special, something like 20 different menu items for around $5 or $5.25. You get a lot of food for the price, and most of the items are chicken or beef dishes. I did the chicken with cashews, good stuff!

If you want good Italian food (REAL Italian), eat at Finelli's on 4th Avenue. Totally worth the prices. Best Italian food in Altoona hands down, IMHO.

Also, I second the vote for Al's bar food. I love living around the corner from them. :D Don't rule out 30 Something's food, either. Claudio is doing a pretty kickass job down there.
Dood...

Tim's American Cafe has the best wings. Honestly, that's the only thing I've ever eaten there, but I've heard nothing but good things about all of their food. Decent prices and big portions.

Also, if you're looking for something different, The Phoenicia has great Mediterranean food. It can be a little pricey, but it's authentic and tasty in a really nice atmosphere...the decor is awesome. :D

Altoona Hotel Pizza at one time was the best EVER... Of course that was about 16 owners ago.....

Now you have to go to Pelly's to get the best re-creation of Altoona Hotel Pizza.. or the OIP (old Thompsons Pharm) in Juniata, if Pellys is too far for you... But the real deal Altoona Hotel Pizza rules....

How about Donnie Crums (now cooking at Al's Tavern) version of Gregs's Chicago Stuffed? Mmmmm.... "White" or "Red" with the sauce on top.... Donnie Crum should have his own pizza chain by now.. every time he touches dough it turns to instant yummy for da tummy.... When he was cooking at Pellys I was there getting Chicago Stuffed's every week....

If you leave Tim's Cafe by any other method than being wheeled out in a wheelbarrow, you weren't trying hard enough. Every single thing I ever tried there was excellent.
Try the Altoona Cheesesteak sandwich, or get a chicken salad with pasta on it, either one will feed you now, and later if you take the rest home.--->JMS

If you can live off rabbit food.

Go to Ponderosa and you get 95% of Hoss's rabbit food plus liver & onions, meatloaf, roast chicken, wings, potatoes, spagetti & meatballs, hot mixed & other vegetables and the irresistable chocolate pie (mmmmm). The macaroni & cheese even tastes good--where have you seen that on a buffet?

For the past 4 months, they sent out flyers with $5 lunch buffet coupons and a $5 coupon for the Sunday breakfast buffet that includes bottomless coffee & orange juice and cooked to order omelets. Of course, you get all that other artery clogging stuff like sausage, bacon, corned beef hash, sausage gravy, scrambled & red/green pepper eggs, french toast, doughnuts and...you guessed it...chocolate pie (mmmmmmmmm)

Yep, they have ice cream too.

I actually like Ponderosa, but my wife doesn't, so you know how that tunes goes. They used to have fried okra on the salad bar, and I loved that stuff, you don't usually see that one on a salad bar.
I actually tried the frog legs at Gourmet Buffet last time I was there. Saladbar Frog Legs. It just screams exotic parasitic disease, doesn't it? So far, no ill effects. I hate to sound cliche, but it was like eating a tiny chicken wing with no sauce. Same taste, just smaller. Everybody was right.
I can add that to the other weird stuff I've eaten: Bear, groundhog, caribou, elk, alligator, snake, snapping turtle, racoon (loong time ago), goat, rabbit, eel, squirrel, crayfish, and on and on. But I'll be damned if I'll eat mountain oysters or fish roe. Bleccch.--->JMS

Ok so I went here last weekend, upon your advice.

Had the chicken and beef bulgogi, it was great. Some of the side dishes with it are kinda strange (traditional Korean stuff) I tried them all but wasn't too crazy about any of them.

The lady is really nice too.
