As a blues singer and a rock singer I think it depends. I come from the Joe Cocker school of manic-ness and I really need to be that way to sing, cause I do it with my whole body. Especially if the crowd is amped and in to it like they were at The Spyglass Blues Festival this summer. Absolute pandamonium! There were a few bands that were more laid back, but I think that we had 'em the most excited, at least that's what we were hearing from the crowd. I'm sure it depends on the peeps.
I don't have a choice anyway, I can't help it. I was doing some studio stuff this past weekend and the guy I was workin' for wanted me to belt as soulfull and powerfull as I could for the ending of one of his songs. I finally just had to grab the damn mic and act like I do onstage to get what I wanted. It worked.
