Website/Myspace......

Post by Mudbug »

Hey!!! Does anyone have a REAL website anymore?? My space is free, cool, hip, all the rage and all that neat crap. But some of us might not have the time or want one. Maybe someone doesn't want to be your friend to recieve all the crap you or a hacker sends out to jam up there PC.

MAYBE they just wanna see what your band is up to and check you out without all the strings attached.... :o

I mean no disrespect to anyone. It's just a question. :D

Myspace is a great tool but I still like to see a regular website. They are both useful in their own respect.

Myspace is cool because it's easier to drive traffic there. You have the Friend list, and there's your avatar, right there, all you have to do is see it and click. Our band has gotten some pretty cool out-of-town gigs from it, who wouldn't just randomly visit mamacorn.com.
I see us with a domain of our own soon, though. It's more business-like.--->JMS

I think both have their place. The biggest thing with either is UPDATES!!!!
I have seen way too many bands have schedules that are way behind.
On sort of side topic I dont know why more bars (especially that have entertainment) dont have websites more. I know it would sometimes making figuring out where to go easier than having to call a said bar and ask who is playing on a given night.

I agree, they both have there place and are a good tools for bands because of the obvious, BUT.... (There's always a butt somewhere!) Take me for example. I have no myspace. I don't want one. (That shit is a pain in the ass.) BUT.... I like to check out bands, look at pictures and stuff. Just like anyone else.... BUT.... with myspace I can't. I'm not looking to be a "member". (Although, I've been called a "member" ) Unless it's in the Mile High Club or The Millioniar Club... That I would be a "member" of.... Sorry, that got a little silly   BUT... You dig where I'm coming from.... :D

I fully agree. One of the biggest headaches I have to deal with when my monthly article deadline time approaches is having to do internet detective work to find out whether a band's website or their Myspace has the more up-to-date information, or even lists their band members, etc. And I've even seen national acts that don't keep their websites or Myspace sites updated.

The computer age is supposed to make gathering information easier, but sometimes it gets downright nerveracking!

I think a band should have a website first and foremost. A website shows professionalism and clubs will know you're here to stay.

MySpace is a flavor-of-the-week site and the amount of childish behavior and "glittery" comments on there shouldn't be your only online presence.

With that in mind, I realize if you don't know a lot about web design or hosting, it's not entirely easy getting a website put together and maintained.

It's sad to see local clubs around here don't have websites.

Some used to.. 4 Dees & 30 Something: I'm looking at you.

I agree that having a website is a valuable tool for your band but only if it is kept up to date. We tell everybody to visit our Rockpage page for updates because we change it as soon as anything happens. This also drives many more visitors to Rockpage who check out other bands, topics, etc. on the site.

You don't need to be a myspace member to look at a bands schedule on myspace. If you do, that band needs to quit the internet.

I think myspace pages are stupid, and I don't find my life that interesting enough to try and advertise about it.
Myspace is for teenage girls, guys with no real friends, and overweight women who don't have a life.

I have some friends who have one and i bust their balls all the time about it. It's like an online diary or something.

My mood for today:

I know!! You go, metalchurch!

I had a previous personal Myspace, but I deleted it when I made mine a music site. It was mostly music-related anyway, and I just mostly wanted a place to put songs I've been associated with. With all this talk, maybe I better go update it!---->JMS

i think both should be utilized. myspace might not be around forever...but as long as it still exits, it can be a GREAT promotional tool for a band (not to mention a FREE promotional tool)....a person (member or non-member) can veiw a band's myspace profile and automatically that band's songs begin to play...if they like what they hear then they'll seek out that band's official website. An "official" website is an absolute neccesity because you controll every aspect of it.

I can say this, we've had an official website for 6 years..and we will continue to do so, but, in the past 3 years we've ended up getting alot more good paying gigs and good opportunities through myspace than anything else, I don't know why..that's just how it's been for us latley.

i remember having a website for a punk band i played in a very long time ago.....a few oldschoolers would always say stuff like: "why would you concentrate on a website and not a real press kit....websites are just a flavor of the month".

We'd like a real site but good ones cost!!..and upkeep to keep them fresh.

Myspace is kinda cool...SOMETIMES!..
#1 I get sick of the logging in 2-3 times when I know I didn't mess up "tpynig"!!
#2 The fake "see me nude chicks that want added"
#3 The " See who's on line" movies when you log off, because guys that work for me think I am video chatting to some chick OR DUDE when I didnt realize its on there when they walked up to my desk. ( tho the blonde that raises her eyebrows and pulls her hair back and makes ya think she's taking her top off tho I didn't notice the whole thing ..cough) IS hot!!!
#4 The people that have to send "try and beat my score" sh$t.
#5 The "Hey didn't you see my 1st post" so I am sending it 4 freaking times that we're playing somewhere.
#6 the interraicial dating service pop-up...(Tho black chicks are hot!!)
Wait...I hate MYSPACE!!!!!!

myspace is good for promotion, and thats about it.

I read that facebook actually gets more traffic nowadays, but bands have not caught up to that trend yet.

Neither of them can compare to a well done website (emphasis on well done)

If your website still has flashing gifs and midi, please quit the internet now.

When I start playing out again, I'm gonna make a band google calender. Way cooler than myspace.
Stand back, I like to rock out.

Whatever. Its also for people to contact old friends out of the area and just a way to have fun, express yourself in a silly fun way or whatever you're into.
90% of my myspace friends are people I very rarely see in "real life" and its fun to have daily contact with them.

I like myspace because toddburns.com would have cost money.

I don't think it makes much sense if you are a cover band with no originals...but who am I to say. I personally am much more apt to go to a band's myspace than their website.

All this negativity about myspace has prompted me to post a new blog on mine tonight and a new song tomorrow.

Hmmm...are you sure you're talking about myspace?

I know plenty of very popular people with a LOT of great things going for them who have myspace. I don't think having a myspace would really define a person. Then again...I have an "online diary" that I've kept since 2003 on WordPress, so maybe I'm just silly. OR...maybe I just like writing and doing that kind of stuff?

In my opinion, myspace is a good network to keep connected to old friends and people who live out of state. Logging on is kind of like seeing those people everyday. It's easier to keep in touch.

As far as these dumb 'mafia wars'....that's a whole different story. ;)

It only costs around $9.99/year for you own .com/.net/.org

then you must by hosting for the actual web site..that's only about 6-10$ a momth..it's really not expensive to have your own website anymore..

it's the actual upkeep and designing it that's the tricky part.

We have a real site www.alleypopper.com and a myspace www.myspace.com/alleypopper.

The real site doesn't really get updated but does provide set information that really doesn't change with a link to myspace. Anyone can view our myspace. If you don't like those mafia war messages and the other crap, you can change your settings so that you do not get messages sent by the 'apps'.

I also find it easy to no accept friends requests from those that have nothing to do with our market...ie those hot chicks from california looking for a mate. Most of our friends have some sort of connection to our area, or are bands, and some are other venues...in fact, I just added The Castle Pub because I really like what they do.

I get a lot of customers in that say, "hey, are you the one that does the myspace for this place....its really cool. That's the only way I know what's going on any more."

I tend not to use standard themes but will often create my own or do my own tweaking. I don't have the time to keep changing the real site.

Slacker Theory has never played for us (yet) but I sure get a lot of compliments on the song I have up on our site from them....

Sorry for being snippy. Im a myspace addict AND I put on a few pounds....maybe the 2 are related
But as far as the telephone...I have telephobia if there is such a thing. I despise the telephone. BUT to each their own. Again sorry for my snippy tone in my post.
