I think Cliff's a good player, but I don't think he deserves the "Jaco of Metal" status that people seem to bestow upon him. Again, I think that David Ellefson is every bit as good, but doesn't get the same recognition because he doesn't have the "Burton Mystique" and Megadeth didn't get the same mainstream popularity that Metallica did. His bass work in Take No Prisoners slams!
I know Paul, and I greatly respect your opinion. I just get tired of the anti-Cliff rhetoric. As far as both of those guys go, the first three albums alone put them in a class worthy of respect. I've stood in front of both of them when they were giving it their all, and half the people on here would give their right nut for half the talent they displayed. I've also stood in front of Ellefson, Stanley Clarke, Geezer, Geddy, and a whole slew of fantastic bassists. Cliff had something that none of them do.

On another note,

anyway

overrated: Lamb of God and Zakk Wylde
underrated: Alice in Chains and Alex Skolnick

PS for those who think Dimebag is overrated if he had never formed Pantera metal would have died in the 90's cuz he paved the way for every nu metal band when they went number 1

I disagree with your first point, because I think the pizzicato vs. pick debate is superficial. Many great players from Paul McCartney to Carol Kaye to Chris Squier to Steve Swallow to some of our own local bass players have utilized the plectrum to awesome effect. Actually, I'd go as far to say that using a pick can be a challenge unto itself, because pizzicato makes string skipping and right hand muting a lot easier. I've always been primarily a pizzicato player, but I started using a pick more (thanks to the urging of ToonaRockGuy ;) ) a few years ago, and one of the biggest obstacles I found right away was muting, since I use to do 95% of my muting with the ring and pinky fingers on my right hand. When I started using a pick, I had to start muting more with my fretting hand, which was difficult at first. Well, I'm probably getting way off topic here.

Anyways, agree that Jason Newsted is also highly underrated. He is really solid and he had a slammin' tone on the Black Album.

This thread is pretty cool, because it shows that we all disagree and agree on many things. It's cool to see why we feel about the things that we do.

I didn't want a start an argument of fingers vs plectrum (hell you could even add slap too) but for their style of music fingers is more impressive playing thrash metal (which is why I've only listed the fast songs). And Newsted uses fingers and a pick watch the "One" music video, I can't imagine how awesome And Justice For All would have sounded with some bass.

On another note all bass players are underrated.

Unless your name is Les Claypool, you mean.

I love his playing, I just don't think he is underrated or overrated.

Many will say he is overrated though.

Even if he's not super talented, he is super unique, and that's why I love Primus.

IMHO:

Over-rated: Thinking your negative opinion on others' Musical likes, dislikes, etc., matters to them.

Under-rated: Simply reading and accepting others' Musical opinions without feeling the constant need to pick them apart and offer your own in argument or negative rebuttal.

That being said, I have a few. :)

Cars:

Over rated-- V8's

Under rated--Turbo'd 4 (especially twin turbo'd 6)

I've driven both,i've owned a blown 5.0 mustang ('95), and i've driven many faster turbo'd import, most impressive was a '92 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. i revved it up to about 4500 RPM and dumped the clutch and not a single tire spun (the VR4 is all wheel drive and all wheel steering) it just launched so fast and with so much force, i nearly blacked out and i was definately disoriented for about 3-4 seconds, it was absolutely amazing, my mustang ran 387 HP at the wheels and it was uncontrollable, where as the 3000GT was smooth, nimble, and fun. which is amazing for a 3800 lb car.

I remember Herman's Hermits. Didn't they have some major Beatle cuts?

Videos destroyed the vitality of rock and roll. Before that, music said, "Listen to me." Now it says, "Look at me."
