Are you still using those special ear plugs ? I'm thinking of getting a pair. How do you like them ? They give you a balanced EQ don't they ? Rather than just a mutted sound ?

Guess I'm asking for a review.........

don't know if there is anywhere in altoona to get it done, but you can actually get molded ear plugs made.. basically you go to the dr and they pour a wax in your ear to make a mold then send away to have the plugs made and they cancel out some low end and some high end.. both my keyboard player and my old guitar player have them... my guitar player also has a set of molded in-ear monitors too.. their awesome.. expensive as all hell, but they have a built in tweeter....

my cheap plugs are by a company called hearos... they cost me like $12 at guitar center and they have different decible ranges that you can pick up, I got one of the lightest as I have to sing and be able to hear my percussion rig as well as the keys and guitar for ques....

See I'm the opposite when it comes to vibrations mainly because I play a lot of blasts at different speeds. Gravity blasts (which I have been toying with) is pretty much all stick vibration using mostly all stick sitting on the rim and in a roundabout way using the Moeller technique in which the downstroke from your thumb and index finger with the stick sitting on the rim, the bounce from that downstroke coming into the upstroke abruptly changes back into the downstroke (that's kind of a vague summarization, but its tough for to explain). When you watch someone playing it looks like just a stick bouncing on the snare. It produces a double stroke roll sound on one hand when played correctly. I definitely have tried anti-vibration sticks like Ahead, or the Zildjians that were aforementioned when I first started playing, and definitely disliked the feel(and I didn't even know how to blast then).I definitely bank on a good amount of stick vibration exclusively on the snare(not so much on toms). My toms are tuned pretty low anyway, but I try to get a good bounce as much as I can without comprimising playability and sound. I used to use Mike Portnoy signature Pro-mark, which is a great stick, but I wanted to try the Vic Firth 8DN's and I haven't went back since. They are pretty much made for jazz applications, and I don't hit my shells that hard, except for cymbals, and I gotta say they have been really durable so far...sometimes the middle part of my sticks get eaten away from some rim shots. Alot of my snare hits, hit the rim, so that's the only reason why. I moved my snare a small increment on the stand to not play as much of the rim. For warm-ups, pre-show, I do the Dave Grohl method using beefy sticks on pad, throne seat, etc, and then while playing on the kit I'll use my thinner sticks. I do alot of "diddles"(thanks, Rob) and triplets at different speeds, while working with my feet on the floor. So, yeah, I was just sounding off about what I do. I didn't expect to make such a long post.

There is a room upstairs at Ford Music Store we might be able to use. Perhaps on a regular basis. BUT I would need some help cleaning it up first. It's full of chairs, benches and all kind of stuff that would need to be moved.

I'll try to check with them over the weekend if you guys want to spend the time to clean it up.

BTW Ed Ford had major back surgery on Feb. 4th. He's in a lot of pain, but doing well otherwise.

I use Etymotic high fidelity earplugs.

The ones that I use have a sound reduction of 20 db. The sound heard with these earplugs is as clear as the original, just quieter. They are pretty comfortable too. There are times that I will leave them in for 2 to 3 hours. Also, my band can attest to their functionality. We all use them, consistently, when we practice and play out.

They cost $12.00.

I'm definitely considering going to an audiologist to get a custom set of plugs made. Eric's been using the orange baffled plugs that you can get at a music store. I use to have a set of them, but I didn't find that they cut the frequencies evenly and were difficult and sometimes painful to put in.

I've considered trying Hearos.

Drum night...

Post by randydrummer »

Thanks for the compliments!! I definitely have some experiences I'd love to share. I'm still working on getting my house set up, but eventually I'd like to host a get-together. It would be nice to find a place big enough for a few kits so we could maybe mess around with a few different styles. You know, a rock kit, jazz kit, drum 'n' bass kit... could be a lot of fun and expose some of us to some different things.

Molded musicians ear plugs

Post by mourekick »

I use molded earplugs for engineering. They send you a do it yourself mold kit . Then you just send them back and they send your custom molds back. I like them bacause it still sounds good at a lower db.
