I'm in! Just don't make it before June 1st...I am a total puss about riding in the cold

OH...and BTW...perhaps the Jaffa folks just need to stick to hosting the Jaffa Shrine Circus for the kiddies and skipping the 'big bad biker'events. Besides, the circus is so enlighting for the little kiddos - nothing like seeing abused and emaciated animals peform in such a natural setting

For the Record

Post by The_Underground »

We just wanted to clarify a few things about Roar in the Mountains.

For the past 2 years the Jaffa Shrine allowed Roar in the Mountains to use their PARKING LOT with the stipulation that the Jaffa Shrine would be the exclusive beer and food vendor during the event. ALL beer and food on the premises was sold by the Jaffa and ALL profits went directly to the Jaffa Shrine. Apparently the Shriners decided to leave that minor detail out of the paper while they were on their "family friendly rant".

When The Underground was approached to help with Roar in the Mountains, we were excited about the opportunity to have local musicians play at an all age, free event. Partnering with Schneider National Trucking, Q94, FOX8, and ABC23 we had over 10 bands play for patrons and visitors during the entire weekend. Special thanks to the following bands who participated (if we missed anyone we're sorry):

ACALASIA, SPIRIT LOST, LIES INC, TONY MOLLICK PROJECT, FROM DISSENSION, STUCK IN KAOS, NINETAIL, CHOKING FAITH, DRAGON FIRE, WISKERBISKET, WAY DOWN EAST

We (at The Underground) were even reprimanded by the Shriners for providing FREE pizza and water to bands who played at Roar. They wanted the bands to buy their food and drinks (from the Jaffa Food tent of course), even though the bands were donating their time and talent for FREE to help make this event a success. Papa Johns gladly donated 40 pizzas for us to feed our musicians and staff over the weekend.

We are bothered by the fact that our local musicians, who supported Roar in the Mountains, have been labeled in the media by the Jaffa Shrine as offensive and apparently unsuitable for community oriented events.

The Jaffa's claim of "wanting to take complete control" is completely misleading. Every action that took place at Roar was approved by the Jaffa in advance. For example, we approached our Jaffa appointed representative in March 2007 with the idea of bringing in a national act. The Shriners not only approved Jackyl as the live entertainment, but gladly charged us thousands of dollars for rental of their auditorium and once again added in the stipulation that they get ALL alcohol and food sales. ALL alcohol sold at the concert was provided by the Jaffa and ALL profits went directly to the Shrine.

According to “off the record” comments made by Jaffa Officials at last week’s press conference, “bikers don't like heavy metal or goth people”. It seems the Jaffa is "all about the kids” as long as your kids meet their criteria and are deemed suitable and non-offensive.

We would like to thank everyone that attended roar in the mountains last year and enjoyed what the event had to offer and was trying to accomplish. It is unfortunate that Jaffa officials are trying to undermine what was intended to be a something for everyone, entertaining enough for adults, but safe enough for kids, positive Altoona event.

This year, Roar in the Mountains 2008 will take place Sept. 19-21 at Legion Field in Hollidaysburg. We want to thank everyone who has spoken out in our behalf; with your help Roar in the Mountains will continue to grow for years to come. We encourage everyone to contact Altoona Mirror Staff Writer William Kibler at 949-7038 and express your discontent over this topic.

Thank You.
Everyone at The Underground

There's only thing I can say about the Shriners. Man could they drink.
it was more out of control in the basement drinking with the shriners than it was watching the concert. I had to leave because I knew it was about to get hand.

the last thing I heard was a shriner telling my buddy (who at the time was sporting a red shriners jacket given to him by a drunken shriner lol)... hey man do you want me to get the little cars out so we can drive them around in here.

The way the Underground handled the event was awesome. EVERYONE that I seen was having a great time and I didn't see anyone or anything unsuitable or offensive.
I wish Coke was still Cola and a Joint was a bad place to be.

The Shiners must've put alot of research into the choice for the headlining band. Who would think that Jesse James DuPree and Jackyl would say anything "offensive?"

I did see lots of little kids there. I even told my wife that I couldn't believe that some of those parents brought kids that young to a Jackyl show. I'm probably the least "uptight" parent there is, but no way would I take my 11 year old daughter to see Jackyl.

I was at Burgi's for one of the last shows there that Friday night, with the Tony Mollick Project. My son and I then attended all day outside Saturday and the latter part of Sunday. I saw quite a few other children there as well, both days. I recall it being very hot and humid, again, both days. As a matter of fact, on Saturday, the most fortunate Bands were ones whose time to play provided them Blessed SHADE. 8) I bought Mt. Dews, Pepsis, water and food, and saw a lot of the aforementioned being sold. Besides food, there were other vendors, too. If my memory serves me well, there were a few t-shirt vendors and possibly even a memoriabillia (patches, stickers, etc.) and a tattoo vendor. Aha! Maybe all of the food and beverage proceed$ aren't enough for the Jaffa and they want a piece of that action, too! :P Why, to go toward$ making the needed "improvement$", of cour$e! :D

By Roar weekend this year, hopefully step-by-step directions (or links to such...I'm 'toopid.) to Legion Park in Hburg will be provided; or for any Roar event RockPagers can go to, to show the rage of the page and boycott those whining $hriners!

I'm extremely surprised nobody's mentioned the obvious...
The Jackyl show, sponsored by the organizers, was well-attended. The Kentucky Headhunters show, sponsored by the Shrine, was not. I think this is simple greed and sour grapes... and cluelessness.
The Shriners are simply peeved that they didn't have the forethought to check the Headhunters itinerary... they had just been to Blair County a few weeks before, at DelGrosso Park... FOR A FREE SHOW. People had JUST seen the band a bit beforehand FOR FREE. We, as people who organize and perform in this area, have paid our dues enough to realize that if there are two shows, one is rather pricey and one is FREE, people will go to the FREE show. (See how paying your Blair County dues is excellent training for the music industry? I told you so!) The Shriners have lots and lots of experience charging people for things, but almost zero experience booking anything beyond a second-rate circus. I'm surprised anyone at all showed up for the Headhunters, other than hardcore fans willing to shell out the considerable cash involved.
shame on the Altoona Mirror for not reporting the entire story. It smacks of collusion, not digging into the story, and I would not be at all surprised to see The Mirror as a co-sponsor of Whine At The Shrine '08.--->JMS

Yup, my son and I'd gone to see the Kentucky Headhunters, I believe it was a few months back from the September show for free, and it was raining to boot! I tried my darndest to win tickets to see them again, but when I couldn't, there was no way I could afford tickets, not and be able to go to any other event Friday, Saturday or Sunday. On the Halloween Blues Cruise, a couple who had been there said I should have went in any way, that a lot of people who didn't have tickets simply walked right in.

I suppose I've never driven that far on Allegheny Street. Where it meets 22/36 is the farthest, and I certainly don't recall passing any field large enough. I've passed by the prison and local police many times, but never any state barracks that I can recollect. Thanks!

Let me clarify. Hopefully!
Go past the Altoona Walmart and go to the Meadows. Turn left and Oh yea, it's Juniata Street, not Allegaheny! Duh... Anyways, you pass the Razors edge on the left, go about 1/4 mile, the State Police are on the left by D.O.T. and the park is on the right. There used to be an American Legion club there called The Star Room, it burn't down in the 70's.
It also went by the name of Dell Delight Park.
Hope that fixes things

WRTA Story

Post by The_Underground »

Below is an article on I found on WRTA's website this morning. We wanted to let everyone know that the information posted is incorrect.

In the article the Shriners stated that “Rumble in the Alleghenies” will officially replace “Roar in the Mountains,” which the Jaffa partnered with last year. First of all, The Shriners cannot "officially replace Roar in the Mountains". They have no ownership of the name and they are not a partner.

In the Altoona Mirror last week the Shriners stated that “the implicit partnership of the first two years conferred a kind of unofficial ownership of the event.”

WTF??? As we stated in our last post, the Shrine allowed Roar to use their PARKING LOT in exchange for food and beer sales. A partnership with the Jaffa was never implied or discussed. Does this mean that every event held at the Shrine is “unofficially owned” by the Jaffa, The Home and Garden Show, Merchandise Show, Health Fair, Wedding Extravaganza, etc.? Doesn’t it seem unethical that an organization can invest their time and resources sponsoring, funding, organizing and advertising an event only to have it stolen from them after it's off the ground and running?

If anyone would like to contact the Jaffa Shrine directly to express your views on this matter, here is the address they have posted on their site:

Below is the WRTA article:

New Motorcycle Rally Planned for Region
By Chris Forshey
Feb 1, 2008, 07:45

There is a new motorcycle rally planned for Blair County.

Jaffa Shrine officials announced the details of their “Rumble in the Alleghenies” event during a news conference on Thursday. The rally will be held September 19th through the 21st.

“Rumble in the Alleghenies” will officially replace “Roar in the Mountains,” which the Jaffa partnered with last year. The Shriners say they wanted their own event that was more family friendly and allowed the whole community to participate.

Organizers say they will now be able to control the types of events, vendors and music that surround the rally. And Jaffa potentate Darrel Bathurst says the rally will benefit the community and the Jaffa Shrine organization.

Two major motorcycle rides are planned, including trips to the Horseshoe Curve and Legion Park in Hollidaysburg. The group is working with motorcycle awareness group ABATE, who is a sponsor.

Well then, sounds like this partnership must've, conversely, "conferred a kind of unofficial
ownership" of the Shriner's by UndergroundTV. Cool. Look forward to seein' what you do
with it. But, PLEASE keep the little cars with the water-shooting snakes. LOVE THOSE!
OH, and the Fezzes. Keep those as well. The actual Shriners can be done with whatever
you see fit.

Does that mean the Jaffa people will be riding to ROAR in Legion Park??? If so, that's kinda amusing.

I am writing once again in frustration over the Roar in the Mountains Jaffa Shrine Situation.

Below is an article that was published in this morning’s edition of the Altoona Mirror. Once again it seems the story is slanted in the Shrine’s Favor. I was on the phone with Bill Kibler for over 45 minutes answering his questions and attempting to give our side of the story.

One issue I stressed to Mr. Kibler was the fact that our local bands came out, donated their time and talent in support of the event. I told him that we asked (not warned as quoted in the article) the bands to be careful with language because children were present. I told him the bands were very respectful and did a great job monitoring themselves and their performances. We had no complaints from parents or visitors about language during the concert. I spoke with 2 Jaffa Officials on Sunday after Roar and asked if there were any issues or complaints, I was told no to my face, only to read their allegations months later in the newspaper.

It’s interesting to me that the Shriners are using our concert as justification for their actions. We were made aware Sunday morning (Sept. 23) that Jaffa Officials were approaching vendors telling them they were taking over the event BEFORE our bands even hit the stage, so let’s not sugar coat this as some noble cause to protect families and kids.

Bill Wilkinson made the statement to the Mirror that he offered to discuss issues with Roar Organizers; however he has made no attempt to contact The Underground. We have received no correspondence from him or the Jaffa requesting a meeting, we only read about it in the Altoona Mirror.
