Yesterday I tuned my white King V down to 'C' tuning for a song I was recording, and I was amazed at how muddy and undefined my sound got.
It was nothing short of sludge, but damn if it didn't sound heavy.
I'm always in Eb so my EQ is set for that.
You guys who use multiple guitars/tunings while playing live, do you change anything else in your EQ for that, or do you find a nice in between before hand?

I dont judge bands on how they look. if i did that, holy hell, would i listen to anything???
You should still check out Behemoth. Plenty fucking heavy. I think you'll dig them.
You cant see them when youre listening to a cd.

When I've had to switch guitars for tunings, I tend to set the EQ somewhere in the middle so all the guitars sound good. I always tune the guitars based on which ones sounded better in their respective tuning.metalchurch wrote:You guys who use multiple guitars/tunings while playing live, do you change anything else in your EQ for that, or do you find a nice in between before hand?

that ain't no store bought Engl, i'm sure. those guys can get an amp modded by anyone they choose. i don't put alot of stock into signature models for that reason. some of the Dimebag stuff is a fuckin' joke. i'm sure he was plugged into a warhead. and the kerry king stuff? don't make me laugh. IMO, only ESP is pretty faithful to the original design.

I talked to someone who works for Genz-Benz, and they said that even though Randall is a competitor, he knows for a fact that Dime was using Randall gear. I don't know if they were actually Warheads though. I imagine that there was actually something else miced up, backstage. I wasn't impressed with the Warheads I heard, but then again, I generally I'm not a big Randall fan to begin with.Darth Tatum wrote:that ain't no store bought Engl, i'm sure. those guys can get an amp modded by anyone they choose. i don't put alot of stock into signature models for that reason. some of the Dimebag stuff is a fuckin' joke. i'm sure he was plugged into a warhead. and the kerry king stuff? don't make me laugh. I guarantee that majority of the national artists using Marshalls have them hotrodded, especially these guys that have a Marshall sitting behind them and it sounds more like they're playing a Mesa Dual Rec. or a Bogner Ubershcall. I've heard a million and one Marshalls in my lifetime, and they just don't have that kind of gain and low frequency tightness to them.

i totally agree. Marshall do not have that sound; like you said before they're more of a british distortion. and as much as i love Dimmu, i'm not sure i'd want they're guitar sound for what we do. the guitars are like an accompaniment piece, not the thing that drives the band. they intentionally keep the guitars in check so they perfectly fit in with everything else. our guitar sound is our "personality"; and if were really measured in our sound and approach, we would probably sound really flat.

It's an Engl SE. They had been using a Powerball previously. You just need to keep in mind what all can be done in a studio. This part of the reason that I always wonder about people trying to recreate the exact sound that they heard on a CD.Darth Tatum wrote:that ain't no store bought Engl, i'm sure. those guys can get an amp modded by anyone they choose. i don't put alot of stock into signature models for that reason. some of the Dimebag stuff is a fuckin' joke. i'm sure he was plugged into a warhead. and the kerry king stuff? don't make me laugh. Scott, that Mesa 50/50 added so much balls to your sound. Any more and it would need a jock strap.
That was a definite improvement, that's for sure. Sounds to me like you are gonna stick with that also. (today's date: 11/18/07) I'll check back in a month and see what you are using! hahaha!
And to think that you were considering a Carvin, yuk!
We'll have to get together this weekend, I'll bring my rig out and we'll cut some heads.
Once you get that bass dialed in I think that thing is gonna kill. I'm very impressed with the Digital effects going through the Tube Power amp. The tubes add enough warmth that it kind of masks the 'processed' feel and sound of the Digitech.
Now all you gots to do is sell those Deans at a yard sale and invest in some Jacksons, like the real men use! I'm kiddin' man, be a Dimebag Jr. that's cool.
I'm done bustin on ya now! I had alot of fun this evening, I'll get a hold of you in a few.

Yeah I'm just gonna bring my whole rig out, so I can crank on it a little bit.
I'm thinking maybe Saturday or so.
The Engl rips dude, I know that you'll like it. I can't wait to try the new E530 preamp. I hope Terry gets one in soon.
Jackson and Marshall dude!

I talked to Terry on Friday, and he says that he ordered an Engl preamp. I'm not sure of the model though. I think he said he ordered a Fireball, a Powerball, a preamp, a 4x12 cab, and a 1x12 combo.metalchurch wrote:I can't wait to try the new E530 preamp. I hope Terry gets one in soon.

Paul, I'm pretty sure he said it was the E530. I really like the low/high mid adjustment on it, and I think that might be what I'm looking for.
The Engl I have is the 620, and it is long out of production. From what I gather it is very early 90's. I'd like to hear what the new one offers. Just to do a comparison.
I'm extremely happy with my sound right now, and I'm really not looking to change things around just yet, but with all gear, you just never know.
I may be wrong, but I believe that Terry will be the only dealer in PA. That's really cool. Atleast for us cause he's local.

Yeah, I think that Terry said that there are only 10 Engl dealers, nation-wide. That's pretty freaking cool. It will be nice seeing something on area stages that's different from the usual Marshalls, Peaveys, and Crates. Again, not a slam against those brands or the players who use them. I just like to see stuff that is different. I'm tired of the Gibson-through-Marshall sound, and I'm afraid that I'll soon be jaded with the Schecter-through-Mesa sound. I dig a guitar sound or a bass sound that doesn't remind me of the last 30 players that I just heard.

I can certainly understand where u are coming from. U know what is really wierd though? A Gibson thru a Marshall is pretty much a time tested combo; and yet I dont think Ive ever seen someone other than a huge national band use one. Def not on local stages. I havent seen one "Aces national band" use that combo either. I seem to see more Peavey and Behringer than anything. Not 5150 or 6505 either. I have seen a few Mesas, A Bogner, a Johnson, a Framus, and lots and lots of low cost Marshall heads.I'm tired of the Gibson-through-Marshall sound, and I'm afraid that I'll soon be jaded with the Schecter-through-Mesa sound. I dont think I will ever get tired of good tone; but I know Im really tired of garbage tone. Saw a Fender Strat through a Triple Rectifier (had to be "orange tone") the other day. Didnt care much for that. Maybe that room sucked too. Recent Schecter through Behringer tone didnt make my highlight reel either. It of course also had some wacky metal pedal out in front of the amp so the poor guitar or amp never had a chance. Or Squier through 100 dollar Marshall head with 1000 ms of delay swarming the entire song.
I do really like the sound of strat style guitars with active p/u thru 5150's if they are dialed in right. I liked when Scotty was with the last few months of Deviance and we had the sound of a 5150 and the Mesa Boogie DR. i think they complimented each other very well.
I am satisfied with the most recent tone we are acheiving both using DR's.
