Post by f.sciarrillo »

I got my wife a new puppy today. He is a black full blooded cocker spaniel - We named it "Troy Polamalu Sciarrillo" "T" for short :)

This brings me to an idea. What kind of dog/dogs do you all have? Now we have two of them. A German Sheppard mix (named Taz) and this one. The German Sheppard mix is a very well behaved dog. You don't even know she's around until you trip over her. And the only time she barks is when some is at the door.

Some kind of German Shepard mix (the guy selling him at Walmart said he's purebred but he's full of crap)

and a very obese miniature collie (like weights twice as much as she should)

I got my wife & I a dog about 2 weeks ago on her birthday. We got her at the local pound. She's a yellow, Lab/Collie mix, 2-3 years old. My wife named her Gypsy. Gypsy's a very gentle, mellow dog, just like I wanted. She was the only dog at the pound who wasn't barking its head off while we were standing there looking at them. We're getting along just fine. Woof!!!!
I gave you my heart. Whatever God gave me.

Watch with those bites due to the rabies issue. They do make special shampoo for dogs who've gotten sprayed. Ya might wanna pick up some of that at Petco. (or go with the old standby of Tomato juice)

Btw, your default pic looks like Rick Allen from Def Leppard.

2 miniature dachshunds (Frankie and Farfel) and a dachshund/terrier mix (Samantha). Doxies are unique in that everything they do is either hilarious or annoying as hell.
We got Farfel from a dachshund rescue in Virginia, he's paralyzed from the ribs down and uses a little doggy wheelchair-thingy. (He jumped from a couch about 5 years ago, the breed is very suceptible to spine injuries because they're, as I like to say, half a dog tall and two dogs long.) He's the alpha. Frankie, or Cho-cho as my wife calls him, is the youngest dog, very active and always has to have 100% of your attention. Samantha, nicknamed Manfy after how my then 3-year-old niece pronounced it, is 12 years old.
Doxie make great pets, but they have to be around kids from puppyhood in order to tolerate them. They sleep a lot, are very cuddly, and VERY obsessive. They'll chase a ball for hours on end, and you have to watch they don't overheat or get too excited from stuff like that.
They can also bite like an emeffer. Their little jaw muscles are tremendously strong, as they were bred to pull badgers out of their dens... we used to have a 12 pound dog that could pop a tennis ball. The combination of steel jaw muscles and needle-like teeth, and you'd hear the air coming out of it. And you could easily pick him up in the air and he'd hang on by his teeth... he did that once to my nose... I had bite marks that went through the side of my nose, and had to jam my thumbs in his little ribs to make him let go. It was my fault, though, I was teasing him, and scared him.
The wife and I have no kids, so we spoil our dogs. They get better healthcare, exercise, and nutrition than I do. My house looks like a 3 year old lives here, there are toys everywhere.

Kudos to everyone who goes to the Humane Society for doggies. My wife and I go there frequently to take the dogs outside, or drop off aluminum cans or dogfood, etc. There are great dogs there all the time, and they have an excellent record of placing dogs in homes. They do euthanize pets there, but not because they're not placed, in fact, they take dogs from other shelters who don't have as much room or means to place a dog. Always check them out first when you're looking for a pet.--->JMS

I got a Australian Shepard mix, that I got from the Humane Society, named Sully (5 yrs old), and I got a mini-dachshund named Tweek (2 yr old). Both great dogs, minus the fact we gotta keep Sully tied or she would run away and take the mini-weiner with him.

ABSOLUTELY.

We have one beagle/fox terrier mix whom we adopted before she even made it to the shelter. 3 cats, one of whom I found with an arrow hole through both hind legs. I wish I could meet the prick who did that.

How anyone can give up their dogs is beyond me. Are dogs devoid of feelings? People treat animals like furniture

That thought goes through my mind at least once a day. We just spent $1,700.00 on our dog's surgeries. Don't regret it at all.

Heh, some people treat other people like furniture.
I'm really digging all the descriptions and names!
I grew up with and love puppy dogs, but I don't have one now.
Especially with living in town and having no yard, I couldn't subject a poor pooch to that.
We have 3 cats: Tiger, Chester and Tawny Willow Paw, or Tawny for short. (Tawny has 2 different color front paws. 1 is Tawny, from a favorite Little Golden Book I still have, :) and 1 sort of reminds me of a Pussy Willow.) Tawny was abandoned and starving when a neighbor moved and left her and her mother behind. Nice, huh?
Terrified of humans, hunger got the better of her when I threw her food a piece at a time and then put a plate full in front of me. She was shaking with sheer fright as she walked up and started eating. Then, when I lightly petted her, she stopped shaking and began to purr. :D The rest, as they say, is history. When a door to the outside is opened, she runs further in the house. Chester is actually Tawny's nephew, from a litter her adopted sister Patches had. (Before she was adopted, the sister would come visit, and I called her Jester due to her pretty much right down the middle, split color face.
My then 5 year old son thought of the name Chester, saying, "Well, we used to call his Mom Jester." :))
Tiger, Tawny and Chester are small, medium and large, in graduated sizes. Tiger is the eternal kitten, and likes to play fetch with just about anything. If he wants to play, he will simply bring you a toy or string. Chester has this black tail-like toy that he carries in his mouth and meows with at the same time. We LOL, and say he is walking and singing to his baby. All 3 are vocal, but Tawny really likes to "talk". The boys were neutered, Tawny, spayed. This is going back 5 years or so now, but for anyone living in Clearfield County, there was/is an organization called Orphans of The Storm and they helped to defray that cost. I thought I had the phone number of the person affiliated with it written in my book, but nope!

Thanx for the info about skunk remedies.. I actually searched on the internet and it seems like a mix of Peroxide, Baking Soda and dishwasing liquid is the new recipe that's popular.. it was even a mythbusters episode and tomato juice was busted but the peroxide recipe worked best.... I went that route as the special shampoo at Petco was over $11.00 a bottle.. a little pricey for me right now hehe...

Skunk remedy

Post by Jacklyn Miauff »

My choice of breed is the Bichon Frise. I have 3 of them at the moment: Tico, Jacklyn and Abigail. I lost my oldest Bichon (Aussie) in February  . These dogs are an awesome choice for people who have allergies or who prefer a non shedding dog. They are extremely good with kids and NO they are not ankle biters. Just the right size for a lap dog. I can't say enough about them :!:

Panzer: As for the skunk remedy.........the peroxide, baking soda and Dawn dishwashing liquid is the most effective. I work at a grooming shop on the weekends and it rocks! The worst part is..........you will still smell them for awhile when they are WET. :(

We added a Golden Retriever named Huggybears Lily Stone Durango to our family last year. (Lily for short) She is the smartest, gentlest dog I've ever known. Can't imagine life without her!!

my Wife has been talking about one of those for a while now. She saw a Bichon-Poo and fell in love with it ... The Cocker Spaniel is just as cute though. He is very playful, and loves attention.

You all have some cool dogs. I agree with humane society and the way some people treat their pets makes me about as ill as anyone here. I usually watch that animal cops on animal planet and I can't understand while some people treat their pets the way some of them on their do. A dog, cat or any other type of pet you have is part of your family; and should be treated as such. They should be loved for and cared for as much as one of your kids are. After all, they are like your kids ..
