Action in the Town Tonight!

Post by Jim Price »

There was apparently just a shooting incident outside my place of employment this evening, across 40th street in front of the hair salon. My coworker heard what sounded like two shots, and looked out the window to see two guys lying/grappling on the street corner. One got up and ran down the alley, the other ran around the corner and apparently into the Knickerbocker looking for help, apparently suffering a gunshot wound. Police are currently on the scene and trying to piece together what went down.

First there was that shooting behind the Knick late last summer, now this. I'd better invest in a bulletproof vest to come to work any more! Geez!

The police now have their official crime scene gear set up on 40th Street. A full investigation seems to be under way.

Hell, an episode of "C.S.I. Altoona" right here outside of my workplace!

Carefull Jim we don't need our favorite fan & music reporter to get shot in the crossfire. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that kind of thing out here in the sticks. L.O.L.

What I've heard...Going by preliminary reports from TV-10 and some second-hand accounts - the assailant apparently showed up at the hair salon at around 7:30, opened the door and fired twice at the victim, hitting him in the stomach and arm. The victim lunged back at the assailant and grabbed the gun from him, and the two wrestled on the street corner outside the salon. The assailant then ran down the alley behind Q94, while the victim went around the corner onto 6th Avenue and into the Knickerbocker, where he collapsed. (The gun was recovered inside the Knickerbocker when the victim collapsed.) The victim was taken to Altoona Regional Health System, no word on his condition as yet. As of 11 PM last night, the assailant was still at large...

When I left the station at around 10:45 PM, Altoona police still had the crime scene area blocked off, with yellow police tape extending from the corner of 40th Street and 5th Avenue across the Q94 parking lot to behind the Doggie Den, down 40th Street and down 6th Avenue past the Knickerbocker.

I don't like my run of luck lately...I was in State College this past Thursday night and just a block or so away from where that fatal stabbing at Club Love took place, and now this happens across the street from me, about 100 feet from the production room where I was working.

This was a bad night for crime in Altoona. While I was at Pellegrine's afterward, Harry Jr. got a call from his mother, somebody broke into their garage. And I spoke to somebody else, who had to console his sister after somebody robbed the Reliance Bank branch office where she was working, about an hour before the shooting took place. This town is going to hell in a handbasket!

I can't help but think that the Hair Stylist Victim was pretty bad Ass! Get shot two times, attack your asailant, get the gun from him, recover well and go back to doing 8 styling jobs a day! The visual is interesting. Hope all turns out well.

From TV-10's website:

"Police search through out the night for the person who shot an Altoona man Wednesday night. Police say the shooting happened shortly after 7pm inside Trims and Styles barber shop. Police say the fight then moved outside, where witnesses say the two men struggled for a few minutes. Then the victim jogged down the street to the Knickerbocker Tavern and the shooter took off in the other direction. Paramedics took the victim the Altoona Regional Health System."

From WRTA.com:

"Altoona Police are investigating a shooting near the Knickerbocker last night.

Witnesses say at least two shots rang out at the Trims & Styles barbershop on 40th Street around 7:20 p.m. After the shots were fired, two men were seen wrestling on the ground outside before the fight broke up. The victim who was shot was an employee at the barbershop, and he managed to get away and go around the block to the Knickerbocker Bar to seek help.

Altoona Police haven't released a lot of information, however witnesses at the bar tell WRTA News that the victim stumbled inside, dropped a gun on the floor, and told employees he was shot in the abdomen and arm.

City police say they believe that gun was the one used in the shooting, and that the man managed to wrestle it away from the assailant. He was taken to Altoona Hospital by AMED. There is no word on his condition.

Police are searching for the shooter, who managed to get away down a nearby ally. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing."

I live above the bar and i tell you nothing like coming home from practice to see 6 - 8 cop cars and 2 ambulances parked outside your apt. building. Then it's great to see a bloody person being hauled out of the building. Great city we live in any more. I lived in that area all my life and nothing like that has ever happened till this year ....... crazy. Hey jim if you ever need some cover fire so you can get to your car let me know i'll man the turret on the roof.
I didn't do it! It was the other guy! I Swear to God!!

sounds strange, not impossible though, I wouldn't think a shooter would get close enough for the gun to be grabbed out of his hands. I predict some interesting things to come outta this

A strong hunch. The owner of the salon is Charles Bellon, alleged drug kingpin, who was found guilty, then had the conviction thrown out on appeal. The charges have been re-filed. It seems like too big a coincidence for this not to be drug related.

That is nuts. I saw it on the news today. They were saying they think it was an attempted robbery. The assailant knew the shop worker. Have to see what comes of it to find anything else out.

I do know it's getting worse around here; pretty soon it's going to be safer to live in the inner city.

FYI............. I work at The Doggie Den on Sat and Sundays and always see people pulling through our parking lot and then stopping in front of the salon and just waiting around in their cars. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out!

I can't believe someone didn't think of this one: a salon, 2 men...sometimes these things escalate over "boyfriends".
