Custom Guitar Works
Custom Guitar Works
Has anyone seen this place in the Greenwood Plaza? I saw the sign as I was driving by last night. What's the dilly, is this place open yet? I still loves me some basses even though I'm playing Upright now.
Custom Guitar Works has been open at least since early January; I started dropping off Pennsylvania Musician there in January.
Also now open is Guitar Worx in Northern Cambria, next to where Obsession Guitars used to be. I spoke with Tom the owner, and he has a lot of big plans for the place. It should be worth keeping an eye on.

TJ, I would bet a large sum that no one has loved more basses than you.TJ Kelly wrote:Has anyone seen this place in the Greenwood Plaza? I saw the sign as I was driving by last night. What's the dilly, is this place open yet? I still loves me some basses even though I'm playing Upright now.

Custom Guitar shop is very very raw right now if the guy who runs it means what he says it should be worth checking out in a few months as of now the selection in the shop is pretty weak for experienced players great fro people just starting out and need decent cheaper equipment i know he is building a stage in what would be the storage room w/ PA and lights he plans on all age shows jam nights and open mike nights but for now ayleast check it out i personally found nothing of interest though but remember that is my opinion and im a very picky buyer in a 1-3 months ill be checking in to see what he has going on then maybe he someday will carry Mesa Boogie and Live Wire no one in Altoona carries these products I have to drive to pittsburgh to get live wire (live wire is pretty mush Monster Cable for 1/3 the price i prefer it rather than monster) plus i get sick of supporting corportae america i like to support the indy little guy who loves your business

I totally hear what you're saying, Dustin. Personally, I haven't made a major purchase in a local music store since I bought a combo amp about 5 or 6 years ago, because most stores around here don't carry anything I'm interested in. Jarret's use to have a pretty decent stock of pro-level equipment, but I don't think there's a musician in the area who thought highly of the dick-headed owner.
I don't blame the owners though, because they have to look at demographics and know what items are going to sell. Boogie amps, Gibson guitars, EAW mains and Warwick basses just aren't going to sell locally because, frankly, most of the people around here don't have the cash for that type of stuff. Being the po student that I am, I don't have the cash either. But I try to make the most well-educated decisions when buying gear, and I still almost always end up with what I want. I bought my last bass used off of Ebay (gotta love the crappy resale value on custom instruments...unless you're selling one, of course
), and my last cabinet was on sale at Musician's Friend.
But I digress. I'll definatley be checking out the new music store in Altoona. I'd be curious to see his stock of strings. I'm almost after the perfect bass string.

"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
Future Bobby (aka bassist_25) is right. It seems the market around this area can't support the high end stuff. I always like to check out new stores anyways just to see what they have to offer. For custom guitar work check out Paul at BigHeadGuitars in Northern Cambria. His paint work is incredible. I got to check out the piece he made for Kahler for the Namm show and the fit & finish was excellent. Wish I had time to hang around and jam on the thing but I'm sure the tone was kickin' as well.
