PSU-FSU
Wow...what a game, even though it seemed like neither team wanted to win it. Joe Pa goes to 7-1 against Bobby BowDown.
I hope Posluzny (spelling?) is ok. Shitty to have that happen in a bowl game to an All-American.

Of course, as usual when it comes to college football and the BCS, the world will never know ... remember Nebraska, the title game that never happened and the national championship that wasn't shared. Bullsh&t. This is why I prefer NFL to college football. BCS standings are all hierarchy and politics.edgecrush2003 wrote:that goes to show you that penn state could never hang with USC or Texas
This was a game between two tough defensive units that wouldn't let up. I, for one, enjoy watching a defense stack someone up more than I enjoy watching an offense at work.
This was truly one of the best games (pro or otherwise) I've seen in a long time.
BTW, did anyone else notice, directly after the game, when ABC's sideline chick was interviewing JoePA, how Bowden stepped right in to camera, in front of JoePA (who, btw, was the guy who WON THE GAME) and shifted the interview on to himself? Then, chicky just started asking Bowden questions, leaving JoePa standing there in the background. No class at all; not on Bowden's part or on chicky's part.
Bowden reminds me of the coach portrayed by Jerry Reed in "The Waterboy" — arrogant with a fake southern drawl to make people like him.

I still think Penn State's defense (with Posluszny of course) could hang with BOTH teams. Florida State just made some unbelievable adjustments on defense, remember - the 2nd drive of the game, Penn State rolled downfield unstopable, after that, FSU started bringing in 2 or 3 extra bodies, an extra linebacker, they stormed the line, Florida State for having 3 losses going into the game, at one point kiddies... was ranked in the top 5.edgecrush2003 wrote:that goes to show you that penn state could never hang with USC or Texas
If they would have played the games..
Penn State - 28
Texas - 25
Vince Young is a good, mobile quarterback who can throw and run the ball. He molested most teams using both of these, he would run the ball to open up the passing lanes - one problem, not many of the defenses he played had good defense in the secondary - Ohio State did, and look what happened in that game.. Ohio State nearly won that game. Young could have tried running the ball, but the speed of Hali and Posluszny would force him to scramble more, allowing time for Dan Connor, Alan Zemitas, and Calvin Lowery to come into the mix. He would then try to throw, but the pass rush of Posluszny and Hali would force Young into making bad throws or trying to force something in.. you cant do that with Alan Zemitas or Anwar Phillips in the backfield.. Young would have struggled, and had to rely on a running game.. State has one of the best run defenses in the country, last nite was an example.. they rendered FSU useless on the ground.
Offensively.. Robinson would have to be able to have Hunt available to find a rhythm. Hunt did more than just run - he blocked. efficiently. If Tony Hunt played all game last nite, the score may have been different - if Robinson had a second or 2 longer on 80% of his throws, he would have connected more with Norwood, and King. This "game" would be a struggle, but I think State would win it - ironically with a Kevin Kelley field goal.
Had they played the games..
University of Southern California - 35
Penn State ................................ 31
I give USC the nod because of experience in Quarterback. Matt Leinart having more experience than Michael Robinson who in reality .. is a freshman level QB (imagine if he played 4 yrs at QB). I truely think this is the only difference between State and USC. Reggie Bush would NEVER have the field day against Penn State that he did in the Pac 10 this year. Speed on offense vs speed on defense.. defense always wins. I think Leinart would be the reason USC would win.. too experienced.. too good..

USC barely beat Notre Dame, does that mean that they would get crushed by Ohio St?edgecrush2003 wrote:that goes to show you that penn state could never hang with USC or Texas
No, it doesn't. And it doesn't in Penn St.'s case. In football, how you do against one team is absolutely no indication on the next game. There are a million examples of that. Remeber this FSU team beat alot of good teams this year and lost a couple in the middle of the season that they shouldn't have.
But I don't think that they would beat them either. It's tough to say though because this one of those teams that just never, never quits. Having a shitload of heart can take a real team (not a bunch of flash individuals like USC) a long, long way. They remind me of the old saying, "They never lost, they just ran out of time."
If youth knew; if age could.
I agree that the game turned into a defensive slugfest. Tony Hunt exiting the game early hurt Penn State, because after FSU caught on to Austin Scott, they totally shut down Penn State's running game and constantly went after M-Rob so the passing game couldn't get on track.
I get the feeling based on what they showed against Penn State, that Florida State could well be in the national championship hunt next season. That was a young team, and should only get better.
Penn State has some holes to fill for next year, but the cupboard is not bare, and offensively they should be pretty strong if Morelli and the receiving corps can get it together early on. Defensively they'll still have Dan Connor, and possibly Pusluzny if he doesn't turn pro. Hopefully this past season should help Penn State with recruiting, and they can land a few more blue-chip freshmen playmakers. With their receiving corps pretty strong, I hope they land some good running backs and linemen.
If Vince Young doesn't turn pro, Texas will probably be a favorite to repeat as champions next year. USC's run should be over, as they lose a lot of players, including Leinert and Bush.

Here's an old post replying if USC or TEXAS could get upset before the final rankings:

For Texas, I'd say about 1% of a snowball's chance in hell. Even if Iowa State manages to pull off the northern division title, I doubt if they can handle Texas for more than 30 minutes. Unfortunately, there is only one team in the nation that can beat Texas: Penn State.
USC might get caught flatfooted playing their biggest rival after a week off. I doubt it. A lot of those guys will end up in the NFL out of sheer winning attitude. 1 in 10 shot.
I thought Fresno State was the last good chance for an upset. If not for a few late mistakes, it damn near happened.
It looks like Texas and USC in the Rose Bowl. Texas will score last to win the shootout.
Its funny, the last shot PSU had in 1994, they missed the championship game because they were Big 10 champs and locked into the Rose Bowl. This year, they won't get in because the BCS took the Rose Bowl away from the Big 10 champion.
