"No More Mr. Nice Guy" - Megadeth (Alice Cooper)
"Whiskey In The Jar" - Metallica (Thin Lizzy/Irish Drinking Song)

Clapton? Thats Bob Dylan...Axl did it so much better than Clapton!
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (B Dylan) is my favorite, there is many more I like but we just did this topic recently so I'm (yawn) bored with it. ToonaRockGuy, wasn't Love Hurts originally by Gram Parsons? At least I know he did it. I thought he wrote it. He had that sweet high voice like Roy Orbison, maybe you thought it was R.O.

Eddie Cochran wrote and recorded 20 flight rock. Not quite sure if Elvis did it probabaly as everyone stole form everyone else back then. I even heard the Beatles cover that on an old bootleg (actually that is how John ans Paul hooked up with George as he was a friend of Pauls and when introduced to John He played 20 flight rock on guitar and john was impressed and asked him to join the band). It was definetly Eddie Cochran who wrote and originally recorded it.

One song that has been covered many times, but has never been made as good as the original is Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition'. SRV covered it, but it still wasn't as good as the original.
I do kinda like Deadsy's version of 'Tom Sawyer', but you just can't remake Rush. I think what makes it sound so cool is that fact that they play it down like 3 steps lower than Rush did.
I also love this Jay guy's version of 'Heart of Gold' from Mr. Young:

Love Hurts was written by Boudleaux Bryant and originally recorded in 1960 by The Everly Brothers. Roy Orbison, Nazareth and many others did versions of it with Nazareth's being the biggest hit.
Boudleaux Bryant wrote or co-wrote 6 hits for The Everly Brothers

The Stones even did it!!! I thought it was written by Cochran for Elvis to record. I stand corrected.paul wrote:Eddie Cochran wrote and recorded 20 flight rock. ZappasXWife is right, Bob Dylan first did "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" in 1973; Guns N'Roses and a ton of other people have covered it. I always like the version the Aussie band Heaven did in the 80's, I remember the video with the band members all positioned atop high rock peaks (I think they filmed it out in Arizona or somewhere out west).
Regarding "Love Hurts," Boudleaux Bryant wrote it, and both the Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison scored hits with it in the early 60's. Most music historians credit the Everlys with having the original hit in 1961.
A Professor's gotta know these things...

Did you know that Knockin' On Heaven's Door was on the movie soundtrack to Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, which Bob Dylan did the entire soundtrack in 1973? Also, did you know that the song has 4 verses? I did not know that until I found this site.

And did you also know that I am the biggest Dylan fan in the world and I don't like that song no matter who does it. Its dreadful. IMO. Stevie actually wrote the song and gave it to Jeff Beck who recoreded a monster version on the 1972 Jeff Beck Group album. Stevie then recoreded it himself the same year and that one became the hit, hardly anybody even knows the Beck version.MOONDOGGY wrote:One song that has been covered many times, but has never been made as good as the original is Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition'. Kentucky Woman - Deep Purple remade it in late 1968 (it was originally done by Neil Diamond in 1967)
Once Bitten, Twice Shy - Great White remade it in 1989 (it was originally done by Ian Hunter in 1975)
Cum On, Feel The Noize - Quiet Riot remade it in 1983 (it was originally done by Slade in 1973)

You might want to consider this a performance rather than a cover. It was a composition for orchestra that was nicely arranged for a live performance by ELP. More than just a cover...Hawk wrote:Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgusky. Redone by Emerson Lake And Palmer
