I think the majority of people go out to have a good time and hear some good music... that doesn't mean a band has to learn everyone's favorite song though. But some people do go out just to get drunk and I could give a shit about what they want to hear.... cause chances are, they don't even care what your playing. Look, I want people to come out and have a fun time and if I can play their favorite song and help them have a good night.... great. But I don't think it's a band's responsibility to learn everything the crowd wants to hear. I'm not a jukebox.

I think that if you're a cover band, then you're somewhat of a "jukebox" insofar that you should be focusing on popular tunes. By popular, I don't mean that it has to be Top 40, but popular within its genre. For example, if I saw a Blues band doing covers, I'd expect SRV, BB King, Howlin' Wolf, etc. I know that I wouldn't go out and play some obscure Velvet Underground tune and expect the dance floor to be hoppin'. But the original point is that you can't know every song ever freakin' written. You can fake 12 bar type of stuff all night. But when it comes to more structured material, you need to know it beforehand. Even though Jazz is improvised, you still need to know how to play the head. Most of the musicians on this board have busy lives outside of music. We can't spend every waking moment adding to our repertoires. If you can't handle that, I suggest making a commitment to becoming a musician, and see just how much of a personal investment it takes to become moderatley proficient at the craft. Then you may lose the "Me, Me, Me" attitude.

Why do people come to the shows? Simple, it's a social event with alcohol and music. Some are passionate music fans, while others aren't. I don't bullshit myself about what I do. I'm a local musician playing in local clubs. I try my best to put a good product on stage, but at the end of the day, I don't expect people to kiss my ass or even remember my name. If people dig what we do, then great. If they don't, that's fine as well.

Oh, and fans, good fans want music, which accounts for about 20% I think. Everyone else wants to get Laid and Drunk AND if the music is good, they'll give you props.

Gee Rob, I'm hoping that was complete sarcasm. I get as much feeling out of the live music as a musician I think. Not all non-musician fans are mindless and just there to get laid.
People go out to see music for all the reasons mentioned but I bet a big one not mentioned is simply "I'm meeting someone here" which is why word of mouth between friends can really help a band.
