Temporary Hurricane Housing

Post by YankeeRose »

Do you have a bed, cot or even a couch to offer to someone to sleep on, for temporary housing? The link below is to a site where you may be able to really help someone, or more than one, totally devastated by Katrina. Even though they mention only major cities, such as Washington D.C. and Philapelphia, Altoona and Johnstown are centrally located and have "Public Transit", something specifically asked for. Even State College and Bellefonte have cabs and buses, don't they? I don't know if our area is even acceptable, or even small towns like Houtzdale, being there isn't any REAL Public Transportation.
Losing everything or being made homeless is bad enough, let alone the literal living hell they've been through, but having nowhere at all to go on top of it must be beyond demoralizing. I've already filled out an offer for use of my big old comfy L-shaped sectional sofa for up to 2. You get final approval...I couldn't afford to purchase much extra food, not that many could, but I'm sure they would be getting their own help, or a job, if not right away, eventually. I considered a person/s might be here through the Holidays, as I don't foresee scads of jobs that haven't existed, suddenly appearing anywhere in this country. But again, only "temporary" is mentioned. A real home to stay in, when you've no place else to go, however temporarily, you might not know what it means. I do...when made instantly homeless, my children and I were eventually taken into a home for approximately a month by a woman, my "angel" and now friend for life Kathy, with 2 children of her own...and her husband was an MP in Iraq at the time. I contributed financially, as well as did my share of work around the house. If you do have the room, it certainly can't hurt you to TRY to HELP these totally devastated Souls! At least check it out...

Finally, disaster relief officials tell us that housing offers are particularly needed within a few hundred miles of the affected area. If you know anyone in that area, PLEASE e-mail them and encourage them to offer housing at www.HurricaneHousing.org.

Another site to check out.... www.craigslist.com. On this site, you can list jobs, housing, pretty much any type of information that can help out the victims of hurricane Katrina. The company that I work for has listed jobs and we are willing to help relocate people from the stricken area to central PA.

I have a co-worker whos daughter and her three young children lost everything from the wrath of Katrina. They did heed the warning and they retreated to Florida. They returned yesterday to Biloxi to learn that everything they owned was gone. They will be relocating to central PA. While they are in the processed of getting here, we (my co-workers) will do our best to get clothing, food, and all of other life's necessities together for them. We'll help them get into school, etc - whatever it takes.

Everything that we do, no matter how big or small - matters. That's pretty much what it all comes down to...

As a side note...I saw a Smith Transport truck at the Altoona WalMart - and people dropping off donations...way to go Smith - pretty cool!!!!!

How it works:

Your info is hidden. If you offer to host, people looking for housing will be able to see your posting, but not your name and e-mail. You can choose whether or not to list your phone number. You are passed requests via e-mail. When someone requests housing through the site, you are sent an e-mail with their contact info and their message. It's then your responsibility to follow up with them by e-mail or phone...

Again, your contact info is not revealed to those looking for housing, unless you choose to make your phone number visible.

The site treats your contact information as private and confidential. Unless you are a member of MoveOn.org Civic Action or MoveOn.org Political Action, they will not contact you for any purpose other than Hurricane relief, nor will they provide your contact information to any other organization except relief organizations who will provide that information to refugees in need of housing.

HurricaneHousing.org is a Non-Partisan project of MoveOn.org Civic Action.

Yes, HarleyRo1, the Human Spirit is amazing...
