TV 10 news

Post by ZappasXWife »

I was wondering if anyone saw the Altoona 6:00 news last night...they had tech problems and lost all of their video feeds. Hate to make fun of someone, but it was quite entertaining to see them frantic, scrambling for SOMETHING to say, they kept saying to each other 'are we doing OK?' and Carolyn Donaldson's hair was down in her face looking panicked. It SO reminded me of that SNL skit when the anchormen lost their video and they flipped out (the weatherman's dead!)!

That seems to happen on an almost nightly basis with the Dime.

My all-time favorite TV-10 screw-up (hey, great theme for a thread!) was a few years ago, actually about 10 minutes before one of their newscasts, when they accidentally went to the anchor desk during a commercial break, to show then-anchor Craig Demchak getting his face powdered before the newscast - classic!

On a more serious note, did anybody see a few nights ago, they did a report on Zion Lutheran Church in Altoona, doing some sort of special tribute to Robert "Willie" Johnson (a big fan of the local music scene, who passed away almost 2 years ago). I didn't catch the whole report, but I think it was on TV-10's health segment, and featured Willie's brother, the Reverend Paul Johnson, and his widow. I think they were doing the tribute to raise money or awareness for the medical condition that claimed Willie. Did anybody else see this?

I have no problem bashing 10. They’re horrible. If you watch their morning news, they recycle ... and recycle ... and recycle the same stories over and over, every day for days. Tuesday, they must've (and probably did) taped the Monday morning newscast and just replayed it. It was word for word, story for story, in order, same as the day before with no updates. I felt like Kreskin predicting what they were going to say next and what story was coming up next.

The 10 News team is THE MOST irresponsible local news agency around.

EXAMPLE 1: My wife and I work at the Huntingdon newspaper. Just before the end of school last year, someone shot at the windows of the principal's office at the high school where our daughter attends. The incident happened over the weekend, when no one was in the building so obviously no one was hurt. We knew about it because we work at the paper, but "Average Joe" may not have heard about it yet.

The following Monday, my wife and I were at a restaurant at noon having lunch. 10 News was on all the TVs in the place, only with the sound turned down (jukebox playing). All of a sudden, these wankers put a picture of the high school on the screen with a huge header reading "SHOTS FIRED" at the top of the screen. That’s all it said.

If we didn't know what happened, we would've gotten up, run out the door and raced to the school to make sure our daughter was not among the injured or dead.

EXAMPLE 2: Carolyn Donaldson reporting live from one of G.W.’s 2003 local campaign visits (I think Johnstown maybe, can’t remember). She stood out in front of the venue and, instead of reporting on the event, she actually was campaigning for Bush during the newscast! She may as well have worn a Bush T-shirt they way she was encouraging people to vote for him! I couldn't believe it. Not only is that stupid, but it’s unethical.

EXAMPLE 3: Another election time Carolyn-ism. When hubby was running for DA in the primaries, his spots were in heavy rotation during the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts, complete with “wifey” and kids standing and smiling right next to him. Then, break away from commercial and there she sits, your trusted purveyor of “fair and balanced” info. Again, unethical.

EXAMPLE 4: 10 News was not informed of nor were they invited to cover the “Helping Hands For Hastings” benefit for good reasons. When that fire first broke out, they were the only news agency looking to make Davey a villian, and even reported the first day “the fire is suspected to be electrical.” THERE WAS NO F*CKING ELECTRICITY in the house!!!!!

I could type forever on this topic, but I’ll yield the floor to others.

P.S. That SNL skit was the first thing I thought of when I saw that fiasco yesterday. I was waiting for Casey to put on war paint and start attacking John Clay. Priceless.

Oh, and TV-10 rules ...

This is why I watch channel 6 (Johnstown) news. They cover Altoona news WAY better than even our own station. They are way more professional as well. Altoona news is absolutely terrible!

Did anyone see the blunder around valentines day? They had a couple dozen red roses that an organization sent into the the station. They had cut back from a commercial too soon and the weather man and I think the sports guy had these roses in their hands. The weather guy said "Hey they were free, I'll give a half dozen to my wife and you can give a half dozen to yours, save ourselves some money". I thought I was gonna shit myself laughing! That was absolutely hysterical!

I also saw Casey at the Knickerbocker on a few different occasions. This one particular night he was completely fuckin' wasted just cursing up a storm sitting at the bar. Me being the smart-ass that I am looked at him and asked in a cocky Jack Nicholson kind of way " so, what's the weather gonna be like tomorrow there TOM". In a drunken stuper he flipped the fuck out on me! "Everywhere I go someone's gotta ask me about the weather and I'm fuckin' sick of it!" The bartender actually asked him to watch his mouth! He got up and stumpled out the door in drunken rage. I laughed my ass off along with most everyone else in the bar. For a minute I thought I was gonna throw down with Casey!

I always felt bad for John Clay and Charlotte Ames. Neither EVER had a remote or in-studio report that went well. Clay's remotes always suffered from a crappy link, or his mixing up his notes, or interviewees with a bad case of lockjaw. Poor Charlotte, the woman does her best to maintain, but they throw wrong vids, no sound, show date lead-ins, wrong mic, bad vid... then she has to stammer out an apology for the mixup, and in the next segment, the only male health story they do this year becomes a bit on using Tai Chi for heavy menstrual bleeding, or somesuch.
I've also noticed the political media bias, as well. Caroline and her cohorts pretty much did an infomercial when Bush was in J-town, and for the other side it was, "John Edwards is in town. And now the news."
Channel 8/23 isn't immune. Some of the most hilarious screwups I've ever seen were on that channel, including a spit-take when they came back from commercial early. Also, when Jim Penna gets a hard-on for the county old-folks-home, or some politician he thinks is dirty, that's all he's going to talk about for weeks. And Helene Waligura left. Bummer.--->JMS

Did you see the promo they ran AFTER the news cast? It started out by saying "Other stations claim to be #1, but here's why they aren't." Holy freakin crap I fell over with laughter. You couldn't have edited the irony any better.
As a former employee, I will defend some of the staff. (not management, though) About four years ago, the station was bought by a shitty company. That shitty company wiped out half of the Master Control staff and replaced it with a computer and robotic cameras. One person now controls the entire news cast with no saftey net. Man, those first few weeks with that system were memorable. If you though last night was a train wreck, that was nothing.

BTW, that computer system was running on Windows NT. Not sure about now.

I have heard that from an employee, shortly before it happened. He's near the top of the food chain on the tech end, but I won't mention names. I actually was going to apply there, and he said not to bother, that it wouldn't be a fun place to work for much longer, that I wouldn't be real proud... apparently he was right. :) -------->JMS

Local news is incredible. I remember the WJAC morning news anchor, Bill Brown, screaming "the camera damnit" once when they returned from commercial. Also classic.

In regard to Rob's comments on local TV news media, I agree, it is a sick business. My wife used to work as a reporter for WJAC and the BS they wanted her to cover was unbelievable. They once reprimanded her for not putting her foot in the front door of a family who tragically lost a child. The vultures wanted some senstional soundbite.

The biggest problem is poor pay locally. It's hard to be dedicated AND competent when you're being paid next to nothing.

The brunette that seems to be the weekend anchor.....damn, I happened to turn it to WJAC, then get up to get something, and I about fell over myself when I saw her......I believe she should become a Third Standard fan......

Supposedly, all the problems were the result of the new virus that attacked a lot of media. CNN was having problems too.

I had no idea this many people watched the local news! Since there are probably even more non-Rockpagers that watch, we should get them to run a story about the local PLCB butt pirates making local musicians and bar owners miserable and making them look like criminals. Not that this would do anything to solve the problem, since apparently local news is a joke! No one would take it seriously. Those that would realize that it really is a problem would be to lazy to do anything about it. Afterall......ain't that the American way!

Well, the problem with running the PLCB issue on local news is something that Vin's mentioned many times before: We're taking a chance that the news is going to make us look like a bunch of whiney assholes and the PLCB will be made to look like an ethical, clean-cut organization.

Also, the TV news is still a profit-motivated business. I don't know if viewers are going to be tuning in just to hear the plight of a few musicians. Then again, if they're airing house fires in North Carolina, they may be looking for something noteworthy to broadcast.

Top story: flue fire, minimal damage, no persons injured!

Back end of broadcast: police on scene of shooting, one person possibly
killed, others could be injured ------cut to commercial!

Is this familiar?

Consider how TV-10 glorified the state police's DUI task force before the Memorial Day weekend. Remember the report? TV-10 aired this impressive display of police power and might by showing a staged fleet of police cars with lights a-blazing, pulling out of the Penn State Altoona parking lot, like some army division moving out to do battle with potential drunk drivers. I have no doubts that TV-10 would probably glorify the PLCB, too, in their quest to silence noisy bars and weed out immoral, drug-abusing musicians...
