See now, that's just unfair...Jesus has a few unfair advantages. First off, he's God's son! Do you think God is gonna sit there and watch his son lose a soccer game? Hell no, he ain't no deadbeat dad. Second off, that cross maximizes his coverage as a goalie. He has a big spread! He's also "light" on his feet. He can float around and knock the ball away with ease. Lastly, abs of steel baby, abs of steel.

Um, sorry too Jesus...

Although, I did eventually laugh my ass off, and STILL do, every time I watch it, at SNL's "Benny Hill" parody and "J.C., God's Son and Company"..."Benny" as Jesus, on a Cross, jumps down and starts chasing "mourning" women, whose cloaks had dropped down to reveal bikinis, of course! The "Benny Hill" music is playing and it ends with one of the women wearing the Cross and they are all chasing "Jesus". The first time I laughed a little, but thought it was VERY Sacreligious, being the "recovering Catholic" :) that I am. I'd taped this particular show, thankfully and then the 2nd time and every time since I've watched that cued sketch I LMAO and think it most likely even Jesus Himself would LOL at it!

Organized religion

Post by Imgrimm01 »

Organized Religion (pick any ) is nothing more than an idea that some power hungry men came up with to keep society ( not so power hungry regular people) in line, People are people... now, 100 years ago, 1000 years ago, 5,000 years ago and they will do what ever they can get away with, if there are no Consequence for an action then we will certainly do that action.. "so Lets see if we make everything that is fun or more so take everything that we don't want the majority of a population doing and tell them when they die they will be cast into a fire FOREVER I bet less people will do that thing." And there my friend is your religion ! Now I'm not saying don't worship, I think everyone should believe in something, BUT use common sense people I implore you.

IMO, "religion" is more of an enterprise than anything else. In any organized sect, there are usually one or two people who call the shots, er...um...I mean "interpret the Bible" (give me a break) and those same few people are the ones driving the Escalades.

I'm with Bobby, believe in something but don't EVER let someone else, no matter who they are or think they are, tell you how to think or live. Make your own decisions using common sense and the rest falls into place.

If there is a "God," I'm sure he (or she) frowns upon the multitude of "fakes" wearing his (or her) name on their sleeves.

Since we're ranting a little about religion, I might as well throw in my 2 cents worth...

I agree, it seems that most churches are nothing more than big judging and gossip arenas. The "better" people go to make sure the other beautiful people are dressed right, and gossip about them and pass judgement upon them if they aren't. And of course they have to talk about everyone else that is doing wrong by their rules, to make themselves feel more superior.

That's the most ironic thing about the so-called Christians; They aren't supposed to pass judgement on others, yet, that is pretty much what they spend their time doing, talking down about others. At least that's how it is with most of the "Christians" that I know.

On another, somewhat related note, I've read that the Catholic church is very much against the Dead Sea Scrolls, mainly because there are passages in them that imply that people should be free to worship in their own way, without the need for gathering at a church. Hey now... can't be having people think they don't need a church to tell them how they should worship and believe in their maker...

I think religion in general served it's purpose... it's always been a touchstone of morality, a rulebook to keep everybody pointing in the same direction. As we become more and more educated about the world around us, however, we understand it more, and there's less of a need to explain things by Divine Providence. Thunder and lightning are loud and bright and scary... what we once thought was an angry deity turns out to be the result of friction between air molecules and water vapor. I find it interesting that as people near the end of their lives, they become more religious, as if they fear or deny the end life itself... it seems egotistical to me to say "I'm not really going to die, because I'm good."
For every good thing religion has done, such as feed and comfort the poor and sick, there are bad things... every war in history was fought for money or religion.
Also, because humans are fallible by definition, we mess up frequently, and there has to be someone there to rub our noses in it. Somebody has to feel guilty, and somebody gets to feel superior. I'm not buying it. I like the post about people doing exactly what Christianity says you CANNOT do: judge people. Hypocrisy is, to me, the basic tenet of religion, and hypocrisy is an extension of ego... self. If people justify their sins, they don't need God to forgive them for those sins. How Godless the Godlike can be. :) --------->JMS

AMEN, Staceman...and it's not only in the Dead Sea Scrolls, I think it's the "entire" Bible, too.
Yes, I was a "Cathoholic". :) Christmas, 1976, my brother gave me a Cross necklace for a present, possibly the only tangible gift he ever gave me, come to think of it...and a few years later, some advice, "read the Bible, it will open your eyes" and I did over the months I was expecting my first child, cover to cover. In the Catholic Church, only certain areas and passages of the Bible are read, over and over, year after year. When you read it all, what they basically try to brainwash you with, goes right out the window. There is no "Bible study" in the Catholic Religion, that I know of...and they certainly don't "encourage" it. I don't mean to offend anyone, it's just my own personal experience. Another "for instance" - I have cousins and know other people who with the right amount of money, a few years ago it was $2,000 - even having had children, their Catholic marriages were annulled so they were able to be married in the Catholic Church again. It's just not right. One passage that stayed with me and this is a very loose interpretation: "it is better to Pray alone, hidden from everyone, than it is to dress in fine clothing, go to Temple (Church) and think to yourself, "look at me, I am just". "Church" as mentioned in the Bible - it means people who BELIEVE, not a building. It's about Faith you feel in your heart and Soul, not a weekly fashion show. Plus, "Religion" any way,
Jesus was a Jew...shouldn't we Christians also be following all of the Jewish Holidays as well? The Sisters teaching Catholic Religious Education used to just LOVE me! :)

Since most of us here are at least of Christian descent, that is the religion we are most familiar with. It is also probably the most affected by the old "organized religion is the opiate of the masses" axiom. Everbody needs to remember that Christianity was a humble, persecuted faith until the biggest power grabber in history, The Roman Empire, under Constantine, decided to use it for arguably the biggest power grab in history. Many, including myself, believe that most of the original meaning of the teachings were lost in that transition.

From what I've seen, the Dead Sea Scrolls really do threaten the very foundation of modern Christianity and, in time, will reveal the original teachings. They just found another scroll in a nearby desert cave.
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...

A-freakin'-MEN to all.

Now let us read over a passage from the book of Maiden, Chapter 8, verse 2:

Believe in me and send no money, I died on the cross and that ain't funny
But my so called friends are making me a joke, they missed out what I said like I never spoke
They choose what they wanna hear - don't tell a lie, they just leave out the truth as they're watching you die
Saving your souls by taking your money, flies around shit, bees around honey

Holy smoke, holy smoke, plenty bad preachers for the Devil to stoke
Feed'em in feet first, this is no joke, this is thirsty work- making holy smoke

Jimmy Reptile and all his friends say they gonna be with you at the end
Burning records burning books, holy soldiers Nazi looks
Crocodile smiles just wait a while, till the TV Queen gets her make up clean
I've lived in filth I've lived in sin, and I still smell cleaner that the shit you're in

Holy smoke, holy smoke, plenty bad preachers for the Devil to stoke
Feed'em in feet first, this is no joke, this is thirsty work- making holy smoke

They ain't religious but they ain't no fools, when Noah built his Cadillac it was cool
Two by two they're still going down, and the satellite circus just left town
I think they're strange and when they're dead they can have a Lincoln for their bed
Friend of the President - trick of the tail, now they ain't got a prayer - 100 years in jail

Holy smoke, holy smoke, plenty bad preachers for the Devil to stoke
Feed'em in feet first, this is no joke, this is thirsty work- making holy smoke

Wooden Jesus where are you from? Korea or Canada or maybe Taiwan?
I didn't know it was the Holy Land, but I believed from the minute the check left my hand.

And I pray, can I be saved?, I spent all my money on a future grave. Wooden Jesus I'll cut you in, on twenty percent of my future sin.

Porcelain Mary her majesties pure, looking for virgin territory.
Coat hanger halos, they don't come cheap, from television shepherds with living room sheep.

And I pray, can I be saved?, I spent all my money on a future grave. Wooden Jesus I'll cut you in, on twenty percent of my future sin.
... and then the wheel fell off.

Everybody needs a little place they can hide
Somewhere to call their own
Don't let nobody inside
Every now and then we all need to let go
For some it's a doctor
For me it's rock and roll
For some it's a bottle
For some it's a pill
Some people wave the Bible cause it's giving them a thrill
Others point their finger if they don't like what they see
If you live in a glass house, don't be throwing rocks at me

We all need a little shelter
Just a little helper to get us by
We all need a little shelter
Just a little helper oooo, and it'll be all right

Check out mr. politician is his suit and tie
But when the doors are closed there ain't nothin' he won't try
Meanwhile mr. medicine's treating his best friends wife
Tipper led the war against the record industry
She said she saw the devil on her MTV
To look in the cabinet ,it takes more than a key
Just like Jimmy's skeletons and his ministry

We all need a little shelter......

I don't belive everything that religion has to say. Some of it really makes ya think but, I don't belive anyone should ever push it on ya! They'll tell you that you're go'n to Hell for your sins but, while your at it could ya buy some of our fine baked goods to help support our organization? The town where I live has something like 6 churches in it and everyone of them bitch about the kids spin'n brodies under the red light and all over town at night! Well how about ya help to riase some money to build them some place they can go! No, No ,No, we can't do that they might turn out to be good kids someday and if we did that we would't have anybody to push our religion on later in life! Get a grip! These same people will tell ya (the die hard ones) that God created the universe but ,there is no way that there could be aleins out there. WTF ! Unless they have died and came back with proof of Heaven or Hell I'm not buy'n it. Take a look around today, with all of the fight'n and poverty, if there is a Hell, this Earth is it! If you have belonged to one of these organizations all your life and have done nothing but good and then one day falter they will say to yer face you can be forgive'n but, when yer not around your a piece of trash! Religion is a touchy subject no matter what and will always be!

O.K. MESSENGER your point is made but, what about the American Indians and other civilizations who knew nothing of Christ before it was forced upon them by Christians? I suppose by the way the Bible portrays things they must have all went to hell also! You cannot ever expect people to be interested in learning about things when it is shoved in their face. If I wanted things rammed down my throat I would have joined the service! :(

If I were to take someones life because they took the life of one of my family members that would be murder / vengenace would it not be? It also says in the Bible an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth! So really then what is that supposed to mean? I belive that if there is one divine being and he , she or it then knows from the day you were concived and maybe long before , that you will commit sins! All sins can be forgivin from what I remember ,except for the exception of take'n your own life. I may not ever except the fact that One Being is in control of everything, and I may be buy'n a one way ticket to Hell because of that! I want to belive that there is some place better after we pass on, but with some of the things I have experienced in my life thus far I'm just not ready to except it! I feel in many ways that religion now a days is made to suit our own needs and not that of God's. I have sat down , cried and prayed untill I could not do it any more and I'm yet to recive an answer from above. I have plenty of demons in my life that keep tear'n me apart at the seams but all I can do is keep on try'n to rid myself of them and that is all I can do. God has never slapped me in the face and said "look man here's what ya gotta do"!
As far as people like you who feel it fit to preach the gospel and use things from the Bible to tell me how bad of a person I am is wrong! A true Bible thumper will tell ya about all the good things God has to offer to convince you into finding/accepting the Lord! I already know about the bad things because people like you push that issue and constantly remind us of it! How about ya try enlighting me with some of the better things the Lord has to offer and then maybe I'll listen! I don't want to sound like atheist or anything here cause I'm not! I have lost touch with some my religion over the years for various reasons and would like nothing more than to regain it , but I don't want to hear about it in a negitive way or have someone push'n it on me ever! Feel free to P.M. me with some of the more positive things that the Lord has to offer and I will GLADLY listen!

I took the test, pretty much knew what it was about and how it was going to end...Jesus and the New Testament counteract the Old Testament. It should also be stated that Jesus said: "who so ever shall believeth in Me, shall not perish, but shall have
everlasting life" and basically, if one has Faith even as small as a Mustard Seed, that is enough. Another favorite of mine..."for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also".

I hear that quote used a lot, and it seems that no one uses it in the right context.

I've found that so-called "Christians", (ie. GWB), tend to use that quote to justify revenge, (ie. war), but that is the opposite of what the scripture really is trying to teach.

From Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount":
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."
(Matthew 5:38-42)
... and then the wheel fell off.
