Flyers on cars
Flyers on cars
Hey rockpagers,
My band recently got bashed for putting flyers on cars at a bar that we are playing at in a couple weeks. My question is, do you think it's so wrong to put flyers on cars at the place you are playing a few weeks in advance to give people a heads up that you are coming. Please let me know what you think.
thanks

I usually just try to stop around the previous weekend and hang up some flyers so people see whats going on the following weekend. If you hang em up in key spots people will notice them and there should be no need to put em all over peoples cars.
They probably got pissed cause most people will just throw them on the ground and let the parking lot litered with your flyers for the bar to clean up.
You do however get a A for effort

The funny part is that the band playing there that night is cool about it. It was some pissed off fan that got his/her panties in a bunch about it (and while whining about it, even admitted to driving while intoxicated. I wonder what's worse: putting flyers on a car or being in a physical/mental state that can easily put one in a position kill another person). Or at least that's how I understand. Rob tracked the IP, so I'm sure he'll let me know for sure who it really was. It would really suck if it were a band member. Either way, after having been physically threatened (Dr. Timothy Leary would say that's operating on the 2nd circuit of consciousness. It seems people's first solution to social problems is to "kick someone's ass"), I just decided to let that BS slide off my back.
EDIT: An IP has been confirmed. The findings are quite interesting.

I'll go on record right now and make NO APOLOGIES for any Bad Daze flyer placed anywhere. This is a business and those who expect to be successful understand the concept of promotion.
For eons, bands have been putting flyers under windshield wiper blades, on bar bathroom walls above the urinals, in music stores and everywhere else. This practice will continue as long as there are bands, bars, cars and parking lots. It's called playing the percentages. If you put out 100 flyers and 80 people throw them away, the other 20 may just show up at your show. That's business. That's promotion.
We're fortunate enough to have a growing street team, and again, any band with business sense knows the value of having fans that dig what you do and care enough to help spread the word. The ONLY reason for getting pissed off over a flyer is if you view that band as a threat. That's ridiculous. Any band that's threatened by another band's flyer needs to go back to the basement and practice more, bottom line. Do your talking on stage, not on our guestbook under an assumed name.
As Sunday proved, there is plenty of room for lots of quality performers in this region, even at the same venue. I recommended ALL the acts that played Sunday to Davey and I hope he books them. And we will promote their upcoming shows as we always do.
One last note on the topic: Our guestbook troll from this weekend did indeed sign under two different identities, being a complete asshole under one ID, posing as a "fan" of the band that was playing and screaming at us IN ALL CAPS how uncool it was for us to do flyers, and then this cat signed again with his real name, telling the "asshole" poster to calm down. Multiple personality disorder much? IPs don't lie, jerkoff.
Due to the positive weekend we all shared in Hastings with many of our friends in the music community who have class, I deleted all the bullshit from the guestbook.
Message to the troll: I administrate our guestbook so I can see your IP, dumbass. Your smoke screen has been lifted. Get a life. Stop kissing our asses on the guestbook. I'm just going to delete your posts, but not before a shit load of people have the chance to go see who you are. Pull your nose out of Randy's ass. You're exposed.

CYPHIN
I agree with Rob, Bands try to promote by putting up flyers in Bathrooms, Bars ,Restraunts, etc. There's no point in getting pised off over something so stupid. In fact my band CYPHIN was one of the bands playing there that night and I can personally say it was nothing to come out and see some other bands had put flyers on cars. I've personally have done it myself. Along with many other bands. Someone probally just diden't want someone near there car. Best of luck at the County Line guys. Jason/CYPHIN

If I had a penny for every flyer that I had put on a car I would have enough to buy a new guitar. It's all about spreading the word and if some shithead gets pissed about it, screw'em they are just jealous that you have the initiative to do something positive with your life besides sitting at the bar and wasting a paycheck. If people won't take it nicely shove it down their throats!
I dunno... some people get all anal-like about heir precious vehicles... it's usually someone who has a ragged pickup truck with it's "name" on the bug-guard (that kills me!) or a Daewoo. Add alcohol, and stir, and it's instant A-hole. A Bungweiser, if you will. Suddenly anyone touches my kickass cool ride, and I'll murdalize 'em.
I used to just target the bar itself with a few different flyers to establish a pattern in people's minds, and let the cars alone. YMMV.----->JMS

I love show flyers, I love making them & seeing them. I like to see them posted on everything... except my car. I hate flyers on my car.
Unless you're a cop writing a ticket, please don't stick shit under my windshield wipers... this inludes flyers, cupons, business cards, and religious pamphlets.
I put that on the same level as telemarketing calls. My car is my private domain... a mini house if you will.
I'd say keep the flyers in public places.

Some people are anal about getting their car touched at all... that's probably a problem.
Liter is another.
Drinking and driving and papers on the windshield don't mix...((lol...it's not the beer's fault...it's the paper's fault))
Personally, I think that as long as y'all don't tape them down... that shouldn't be a problem. Flyer away. Unless the bar specifically asks you not to.

I understand what you're saying, but this is not a situation of someone becoming pissed because something was on their car. It's a situation of someone in a band becoming pissed and threatened because of another band's promotional efforts.
If there is a solicitation ordinance, we don't "paper" parking lots. And for the record, we do check with clubs to see if they mind. Guess what? 99 percent of club owners encourage papering their lots. They know it brings them business. The owner at the club in question encouraged us, not only to paper it this time, but to do it anytime in the future.
What really irks me about this is someone who doesn't have the balls to call me or shoot me an e-mail if they have a grievance. Instead, the fucking coward contaminates our guestbook with horse shit the day after such a positive event as the Hastings show. I can handle trolls. In a battle of wits, they lose every time because they're unarmed. To find out it's someone who posed as a friend, that rubs me the wrong way.
Keep posting opinion. I'm curious to see what people think.

What pisses me off is another group's flyers on the cars of the club I'm playing. Especially if they're advertising a gig for a night we're booked. In most cases there is plenty of time through the week to hit the cars when there isn't another band there, do it then. Probably better for your cause anyway, the more notice you give, the more chance you have os someone making plans.
Not that it makes a bit of difference, but there's my cent and a half.
Not that it makes a bit of difference, but there's my cent and a half.

That's one thing we won't do: Paper a lot with flyers for a gig on the same night at a different club. That's an insult to the club owner, the band playing that night and a sure fire way to never get booked there ... ever. Plus, if you're posting flyers for a show the same night, it won't work anyway. The people are already inside that club. That's rude and a waste of paper.
Papering a lot for an upcoming show at the same venue is an entirely different animal and it can be a very effective promotional tool for the band and the club. The best time to do this is when the lot is full, i.e. on an entertainment night (Friday, Saturday), not during the week. No one's there on Tuesday night. On a show night, people are already in "band mode" so when they come outside at the end of the night, they're more apt to say, "Yeah, let's check these guys out next week."
Also, the flyers aren't seen until the patrons leave the venue so it doesn't impact the band inside at all, unless, of course, they have ego problems.
At many places we play, the club owner will give us a sheet of paper concerning upcoming events, including other bands, and ask us to promo them. We do that all the time. If members of other bands are in our audience, not only do we ALWAYS invite them on stage to jam with us, but we also promo their upcoming shows at that venue. It's a "scratch my back" kind of business and those who don't want to play the game that way, as a "music community" or a "scene," will be left to fight the fight on their own ...
... and there'll still be bad daZe flyers on the cars.

Papering Lots
I've probably spent more time papering lots and handing out flyers than I care to even think about, but the fact of the matter is...the turnout usually pays off.
Littering sucks, but paper is biodegradeable, so as a legal issue it's not really littering. But, I can see how club owners would get mad about having to get the parking lot cleaned.
I agree with other posts on the board that you shouldn't advertise yourself at a different club, but future shows at the same club, I don't feel is stepping on the shoes of the band that's currently playing. Especially if you walked in the door, paid the cover, had a drink, and put up some signs inside.
I also make it a habit, personally, to announce what's going on at the club I'm at throughout the week or the next weekend. In a separate announcement, I tell people where I'll be.
Going back to the drawing more people post and the discussion about people not leaving a smaller radious due to DUI. I think it's being more realistic and fair to help the club rather than help try to push your following . Look at the national scale.....if people really like you, they'll show up at your next show in that area, but only a few die hards will follow an act around the country.
As far as sticking things into car and being pissed off about it. If that really bothers you, hopefully you won't step out of your hometown or you'll have an aneursym! I've pulled things out of my windshield from PSU Football games to Pittsburgh Clubs. Miami area was the worst, but even here in Myrtle, it occurs on a daily basis. It's an effective tool of marketing. Deal with it.
What pisses me off more is when the people have an 8 x 10 Hot pink flyer in their windshield and they don't remove it and they're driving down the road. YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOU CAN'T SEE THAT! Lazy.

I hear ya, Rob. Sadly, not all bands roll with the same vibe we have here on Rockpage. Some people think you're truly taking food from their kids' mouths, or truly feel threatened by there even being anyone else playing at all. I say tough boogies. No matter what line of work you choose, these things are applicable:
If you have ANY success, someone else will do something very similar.
No matter how good you are, there is somebody better in some way.
You will lead, or you will follow.
You have an ego. If you don't, you probably aren't much of an entertainer---however, the other guy has an ego, too.
And, finally, if you wish to cut heads with me, bring your A-game, 'cause you're gonna see me reach deep inside myself and play the best I can. If I'm forced to get off my lazy ass and run a race, I'll be running hard, and I've been running long enough to know how to run.
Do your thing, Rob. That crap works itself out.----->JMS

Well, I dont think I mind flyers on my car. But one time, I came out of a concert at the Starlake Ampitheater & found a fat stoned girl sitting right in the middle of the hood of my car. I was all like "BEEATCH GIT YER FAT ASS OFF MY CAR" She was like "Huh?" and slid off. I don't think she knew what she was sitting on because it was all dark & stuff. Lucky the car was a beater or I'd have beaten her to high Hades with my snow scraper.

Whenever I'm playing at a club, I always try to remember that where ever we are the next weekend, this club still has to make money too. That's why a website is such a great marketing tool. You don't have to plug your shows during the gig; you can just tell people to check the website. Chances are that people are pretty drunk and aren't going to remember a date and venue that you throw out during the middle of a set. I know that I wouldn't remember. But if give them a table topper with your web address on it, they're going to find it while rummaging through their purse/pocket the next day and say, "Oh yeah, that's that band from last night; I'll check out their website".
Now about the flyer situation - If I came out after a show and found flyers from another band on the cars in the parking lot it wouldn't bother me in the least. Actually, I'd take it as a compliment that the other band thought that we were a big enough drawer that it was worth coming out that night to flyer the cars in the lot. I'd always much rather make a friend than an enemy, and the people who survive in this industry have large friend lists and small emeny lists. There's a reason why when you open up a CD booklet there's always at least a page full of "Thank You's"; nobody, and I mean NOBODY, can make it to the top without a lot of people helping them.
I've never felt threatened by another band. If there's a high drawing band playing the same night in the same town as us, it doesn't bother me. Some nights are going to be good; some aren't. I want quality bands playing at the same venues as me, though. I want quality bands playing EVERY WEEK at the same venue as me. Why? Because a club is going to do better overall when it is booking consistently good acts. I've watched the opposite happen - A club books subpar entertainment 3 out of 4 weekends in a month, and then when a good band plays the fourth weekend, they're playing to practically nobody. The club has a reputation of booking crap, so the audience is going to be reluctant to come out and check out a new band because they think it's just going to be another crap band.

Re: Papering Lots
I agree with that 100%, it helps get new people in the door and keeps the club alive and happenin. I've said something similar before in posts........ I called it consistancy, people need to know that they can go to a club and hear a good band.bassist_25 wrote: I want quality bands playing at the same venues as me, though. As far as the flyers go, I still think some strategic placements inside will do just as good as on the cars.
I agree to not promote your bands gig next weekend at another club. We've had a couple internal band debates about that but I only like to mention when we are returning to the bar we are in. If we are at a non club event then I promote all the clubs we play at.

Way back in the day, which wasn't even 6 months ago...HA!...my car had so many band stickers on it that it would've been an insult to not leave a band flyer on it!
What I don't like is when they are placed in such a way that I don't notice them until I'm driving and they flutter, then it's a pain in the ass! If someone has been drinking, it's probably a distraction to them...not a good thing.
How could someone be so creepy as to post on a Guestbook as 2 people and FIGHT with themself yet...to
try and win "points" with said band, or whatever? EW! If you're a true fan, really care about the music and aren't just a poser, it shows and there isn't any need for such a thing. Hee, hee, hee...yes, I know I just answered the question WHY. I have an idea who you are hinting at, but have to second what tonefight said...do tell, do tell!

Since this "Jeckyll and Hyde" dude hit our guestbook, we have yet to mention him by name and we won't because that wouldn't be right. He did identify himself on our guestbook to apologize when he had no choice. If you really want to know, anyone who does their own small bit of research could solve this mystery. But I won't go in to it.
Basically, I think this guy knows what he did was pretty stupid and if he doesn't, then he isn't very bright, but oh well. Again, the best route to success is to surround yourself with "real people" and distance yourself from posers.
