Wow....unreal. Al Villa Rosa was a name that was dropped to us as a place that would probably book us to play there on our latest trip to Columbus with Naked Beggars. What a sad day for Pantera/Damageplan fans and fans of metal music in general. Why do dilusional assholes have to screw things up for the rest of us?

I was reading their website and they said that DimeBag and the bass player were killed. The gunman comitted suicide after he killed them. News reports were saying that Vinnie Paul was also killed, but people who were there said that was not true ..
I am totally shocked that something like that could happen.

just to clear the facts up. ive read cnn and nbc news and checked the boards and read the reports from those there. both DB and Vinnie were both killed, despite rumors that Vinnie is still alive, and the gunman was gunned down by a lone police officer who came in a backstage door responding to an anonymous call. Its a damn shame and smears shame across the face of this industry that we work so hard to prove is about the music and that we're not animals or "crazy" rockers. Its a shame and pisses me off to no end. What pisses me off more are the ignorant assholes signing their passes to hell by making such statements as "They were just a couple of hasbeens" on Damageplans guestbook. Kinda makes you wish you could choose your fans sometimes and make sure no assholes like that are fans of yours.

Wow does that suck. We bitch and moan about metal detectors, but now it makes the unwanted waiting and annoying beeping all worth it. What a fucked up world we live in...

Agreed, because it will be the band/music/artist that this violence will be tied to, not the psycho that pulled the trigger. Meanwhile rappers are shooting each other and their music is as popular as ever?
After something like this, its stressful to be performing on stage...I remember the Concert in Central Park (Simon & Garfunkel) and the look of sheer terror on Paul Simon's face when some nut charged the stage, all within days of John Lennon's murder, and in the shadow of the Dakota.

I don't know what to say. I had not seen yet that Vinnie was also dead. I am very upset about this. It is tragic when something like this happens, no matter to whom. When it is an artist who speaks to you, it becomes particularly personal and troubling. Mrs J is going to be crushed, as Pantera is her favorite band.
And 4DDJoe - don't wish something like this on anyone, no matter what. As for the metal detectors - this guy apparently snuck in a back door (as did the police officer who later killed the shooter), so metal detectors would not have stopped him. Even if he came in the front, remember: don't give up freedom for temporary security, for you will end up with neither in the end. We cannot stop every bad thig from happening.
What a dark, dark day.

I just read AOL news on Darrel. My jaw hit the floor, and I still can't believe it. What great loss for the metal world. This is, in every sense of the word, a tragedy.
In trying to find some light in the situation, at least he went out doing what he loved doing and not some car accident or anything like that.
My he be in peace.

I loved the old stuff and was just getting into Damageplan. The sound was pretty cool.
Did they say if the shooter had a reason? I mean, did he hate them? Or did he love them? Like...Saleena's #1Fan shooting her out of love... Or was the bastage just high on crack etc...?

gun
guns don't kill people, people kill people. The guy was an idiot. They said the shot was at point blank so he could have used a knife. Are we going to outlaw knives? THis is a sad day and i will treasure my pantera dvds and dimebag guitar world articles.

Apparently (that is, according to witnesses at the show) Gale was yelling something about Darrell breaking up Pantera and ruining his (Gale's) life, and "What about Phil?" (Anselmo, Pantera's vocalist).DropoutHighRock wrote:the shooters name was Nathan Gale and it was personal between him and DB. Fuckin shame...esa wrote:::tears up::

Wow....I dont really know what to say...I wasnt a big Dimebag fan but I love Pantera....Seen em Three times as well as Down once....I never even knew who they were untill I saw em open for Skid Row many many years ago and I was like who the hell is Pantera then they came out on stage and I was in awe!!!!!
As a fan(always have wanted to sing but ummm havent gotten there yet, I know I know Im working on it Kevin
) but as a fan I cant even understand this.... I have been able to meet someone who I was a huge fan of, ok well not meet, but Tracii Gunns I got to see La Gunns 3 times 2 of the 3 meet them and NEVER did I get to talk to Tracii Gunns, who was the only one I wanted to meet, and he was about the biggest jerk I ever met....BUT I dont understand this , His band Brides of Destruction is one of my fave and if I ever got the chance to meet him again Id ask why but I would never ever even think of anything like what happen to Dimebag I just dont get it...Its not right....Why couldnt this fan just voice his opinion to the man not shoot him...Plus ok I love music like the rest of you its a huge part of my life but I dont understand how Dimebag could ruin this guys life by breaking up a band....If that was the case lots of us would be dead now....Do you know how many times my all time fave band has broken up, gone solo, made new bands, gotten back together????
Whats this world coming to anymore????
From someone who has had to deal with several personal deaths this year I certainly hope that the coming year is death free......

Unbelievable. I just checked www.damageplan.com, and they have a pic of Dimebag up, with the caption "Dimebag Darrell 1966-2004", so I'm assuming that Vinnie is okay.
I remember going to see Skid Row in 1992 at the King Street Palace in Charleston, SC back in the day, during the "Slave To The Grind" tour. Walked in with a buddy of mine, and joy of joys, Pantera was opening the show, on their "Cowboys" tour. We had front-row seats, and nobody else in the building seemingly knew who Pantera was. Great show, and they blew Skid Row away.
RIP Darrell Abbott. You will be missed.

Here's another story from www.blabbermouth.net, seems to be the latest one...btw, online traffic at this site is a bitch, so here's the actual story:
DAMAGEPLAN Shooting Update: VINNIE PAUL Uninjured; Metal Musicians Mourn DIMEBAG's Passing - Dec. 9, 2004
Scoop of the Columbus, Ohio radio station The Blitz 99.7 FM has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET that DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul was uninjured in the shooting incident at a Columbus nightclub which resulted in the death of Paul's brother, Dimebag Darrell. According to Scoop, who attended the concert and briefly saw Vinnie following the incident, Paul was in a complete state of shock and expressed his desire to be with his brother right after the shooting occurred.
A friend of Scoop's, Kevin Minerd, who also attended the concert, told BLABBERMOUTH.NET that the gunman entered the stage from the left side and walked over to the right side where Dimebag was standing before grabbing the guitarist and pumping several bullets into him. Additional shots were fired, although it's presently unclear which other member of DAMAGEPLAN, if any, was killed in the incident.
"A Columbus police officer, when he arrived, engaged the shooter, and the shooter is also dead, and if the officer hadn't acted when he did and how he did, we'd probably be looking at more dead, because this guy was actively shooting," Sergeant Brent Mull, public information officer, told MTV News.
"We have 200-plus patrons that we have sequestered inside three city buses," Sergeant Mull explained. "We are interviewing them one by one. The ones that were inside and witnessed this, ran for their lives and were in fear for their lives. They are victims too, and we want to take care of them."
As news of Dimebag's (born Darrell Lance Abbott in Dallas, Texas on August 20, 1966) bizarre and tragic demise rippled through the metal community, the news was met with shock and sadness.
"I'm speechless," friend and ROB ZOMBIE/OZZY OSBOURNE bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson told MTV. "This is totally unreal. Dimebag is a fucking legend and this is total bullshit."
"This is insane and this is beyond travesty," KILLSWITCH ENGAGE frontman, and former DAMAGEPLAN tour partner, Howard Jones said. "This is beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."
ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian, whose band has toured with PANTERA and has featured Dimebag guest appearances on their albums, stated in a posting on ANTHRAX's web site, "I am devastated as I'm sure we all are. All I can convey at this moment are my condolences to Rita and Vinnie and the whole family. My heart is with you."
MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx offered the following: "Dime, I will never forget all the times you made us laugh. I'm so happy we got to spend the day together in London recently… We should all live our lives as full as you have. I will miss you, as will all of us... This is a sad day."
Rich Ward (FOZZY, STUCK MOJO): "Darrell was as nice as they come. During the times that I spent with him, I wondered why he played in such a heavy band. Not that he didn't have the ability to school all of us that dared to share a stage with him, but because he seemed like such a gentle and kind man. He had a great sense of humor and was someone that everyone in the room gravitated toward. He never carried himself like the big rock star that he really was, instead he came across humble and appreciative. I consider it a privilege to have known him, as he was one of the 'real' guys in the business and as Zakk [Wylde] would say, 'one of the boys'!"
Jon Dette (ex-SLAYER, TESTAMENT): "My brother just called to tell me that Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage tonight. Words cannot express the sadness I'm feeling right now and my condolences go out to Vinnie Paul and the Abbott family for their loss. This is a huge tragedy for the music world."
Orange County, California-based sextet BLEED THE SKY (recently signed to Nuclear Blast Records): "It's a sad day in heavy metal, Dimebag Darrell formerly of PANTERA, was shot and killed while performing with DAMAGEPLAN in Ohio. We would more than likely not be a band if it wasn't for him, and can't possibly imagine the pain that his brother and his family must be in. RIP, brother, heavy music will never be the same without you."
