Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the June 5 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.
This week, we again took the opportunity to empty the "Homegrown Rocker" mailboxes to see what new recordings have arrived in recent weeks. As a result, we debuted a number of new songs from Anne Kachline, The Low Flying Angels, Aubreylyn, Elizabeth Findley, Nick Stahlman, Chris Bell, Small Town Titans, Horehound, Prime 8 and Paradigm. Along the way, updated "Local Music News," dug a 1980 song by Harrisburg rockers Full Moon from the archive for this week's "Local Music Flashback," stepped "Across State Lines" to hear former "Homegrown Rocker" guest Gordon Tittsworth and Arizona's Born Of Fire cover a Kansas classic, and reviewed Jonathan Monument's Search for Traps CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

The winners have been announced for this year's Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest, where songwriters were invited to submit their original songs about the life, people and history of Pennsylvania. Winning first place was E. Nelson Clark of Hollidaysburg for the song entry "Pennsylvania You're Always Home for Me." James Moore of Norristown won second place for his song "Fields of Gettysburg." and third place went to Hannah Bingman of Lancaster for her entry, "Farmer's Plea." All three winners will have the opportunity to perform their songs later this month during the annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival, happening June 15-18 at Quiet Oaks Campground in Cross Fork (north of Renovo).
In band personnel moves, guitarist Nathan Young is leaving State College rockers Making State to relocate back to his home area in Las Vegas. Nathan's final show with Making State took place on May 21 at 30 Something in Altoona.
Sadly, the area music scene lost one of its longest-tenured frontmen this past week with the passing of Wendel Hullihen on Friday. The longtime frontman of the Smoke Run Band, Wendel had been battling health complications since January. Wendel and Smoke Run were a fixture on area stages for many years, and a number of area musicians have been members of Smoke Run at various times during their careers. Wendel had a big voice that handled Smoke Run's variety of song material, and a big, pleasant personality and presence off the stage. We at the "Homegrown Rocker" extend our heartfelt condolences to Wendel's surviving family, friends and musical associates.
