Nickelback

Post by lynch1 »

question. Why is Nickelback so hated? Is it because they became so popular? I've seen posts on RP where bands state they will never play a NB song? Even on other sites. Some of the songs aren't that good, but IMO they are a pretty good band. Seems like when a band does play a NB song the people go nuts, so why not play them or hate them? Just curious, not looking to start a pissing contest between RPer's or anything.

They are formulaic and completely uninteresting. Sure, they can write hits. But everything sounds basically the same with no evolution in songwriting or performance, and everything is written to the lowest common denominator. Every record is the same:

1. Song about sex that chicks will react to with "OMG that song is about me!!"
2. Secondary song about sex that chicks will react to with "OMG that song is about me!!"
3. Power Ballad that Chad wrote about Avril.
4. Filler track.
5. Filler track.
6. Filler track.
7. Secondary Power Ballad that Chad wrote about Avril.
8. Filler track.
9. Tertiary song about sex that chicks will react to with "OMG that song is about me!!"
10. Filler Track.

BOOM. Multi-Platinum.
Dood...

hahaahahaa......that was awesome Kevin. loved it. But its the "OMG that song is about me" that people react to and really like. Yeah you want to evolve musically, but don't you also want to have your own sound? A sound that when people hear it, that is definitely BLAH Blah Blah band. But, yes, the same content does get old. My band is going to play a NB song, and it is a lot of fun to play, I have to admit. But like I said, there are a lot of musicians and fans alike that are absolute NB haters, just couldn't understand why. I would like to hear from other people too. My wife doesn't like NB because of their lyrical content always being about sex, drugs, etc and can't understand why we would want to play that as a band knowing we are all grown adults, with good jobs, kids, family, etc. But I do explain to her, we are not playing necessarily only what we want to hear, but what the audience would want to hear, and they respond to NB. If we played only what we wanted to play, we would just stay in the garage and play to ourselves.

Not a fan of Nickelback (wouldn't own any), but I do like Animals and Burn it to the Ground.

Nickelback hatred is more of a running joke than anything they really deserve. There are plenty of formulaic and uninteresting bands. If anything, we should be hating on the cookie cutter bands that sound like Nickelback.

Record Company Weasel: "How would you describe your sound?"

Canadian Nü Metal Guy: "We sound like Nickelback, but more formulaic and less interesting."

Record Company Weasel: "Great! We'd like to sign you. Go grab an Affliction shirt and a PRS from the bin over there."

I feel guilty for hating on Nickelback these days. It's so cliche. I feel like I should be moving on to newer things, like hating on Ghost or secretly enjoying BABYMETAL.

I consider them the Bachman-Turner Overdrive of the 2000s: Nothing groundbreaking, but they can write a solid tune that sounds good coming over FM Radio. They can also bring it live, which is something I can respect in an industry now filled with bands that can't provide in key vocals without autotune and need to bring 17 touring musicians because they're normally a four-piece who overproduced their record with a bazillion guitar and vocal overdubs.
