HOMEGROWN ROCKER 8/4/13 (LONG AND SHORT OF IT SPECIAL)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 4 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

This week, we did something a little different. We explored the extremes of time and length from the area music scene’s creations, via our first-ever “The Long and Short of It Special!” We dug out some of the longest song creations the area music scene has to offer, timing in at more than 9 minutes each; as well as some of the shortest tunes, clocking in at less than 2½ minutes each! Mysterytrain’s entry, “Shades of August,” sets the new “Homegrown Rocker” record as lengthiest piece of music ever aired on the program at over half an hour; and if it is not the record shortest, GG & the Assassins’ “Talk Is Cheap” at least belongs in the top five shortest blasts ever played on the show. Along the way, we dug a 17-minute-plus epic from 2007 by State College’s Cootie Brown from the archive for the longest-ever “Local Music Flashback!” Two length records set on the same show!

Here is this week's playlist (with times in parentheses):

HOUR ONE:

HYBRID ICE – “Faith Without Works” (9:41)
TREEHOUSE – “Animals” (9:01)
NOBODY’S HEROES – “Seize the Day” (2:10)
BEN DUMM & THE DEVIANTS – “Poor Boy” (2:20)
WINE OF NAILS – “I Walk Alone” (11:06)
WINE OF NAILS – “Epiphany” (1:23)
BORROWED TIME – “You Got Me Where You Want Me” (1:49)
FELIX AND THE HURRICANES – “Icy You” (2:23)
TED McCLOSKEY – “The Last of the Pin-Up Girls” (2:17)

HOUR TWO:

GG & THE ASSASSINS – “Talk Is Cheap” (1:15)
THE WHATLEYS – “Soundtrack” (2:17)
SKARMA SUTRA – “When Darkness Comes” (2:06)
REVENGE MEMORIAL – “Live Until We Die” (1:44)
COOTIE BROWN – “Universe” (17:15) (2007, Local Music Flashback)
MYSTERYTRAIN – “Shades of August jam” (30:19 – new Homegrown Rocker Record!)

On our next program, with no guests scheduled, we again take the opportunity to explore new recordings that have arrived in the “Homegrown Rocker” mailboxes during recent weeks. We’ll debut plenty of new tunes, including songs from JD Eicher & the Goodnights, It Is Written, Hopscotch with Landmines and more! Along the way, we will update “Local Music News,” dig into the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” step “Across State Lines” to hear music from an out-of-state independent band/artist, and review StarChild’s Volume II CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”
