Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 5 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

This week for our interview, we went mobile again, traveling to Penn State Altoona; thanks to this week’s guest, Mysterytrain singer, guitarist, conductor and mastermind Dan Klock (www.mysterytrainlive.net)! Dan updated us on Mysterytrain happenings, and previewed their upcoming outdoor concert and festival season, which includes opening for Mickey Hart at the Kempton Music Center on May 11, and for Rusted Root at Tussey Mountain Amphitheater in Boalsburg June 1 – two lucky listeners won pairs of tickets to the Rusted Root show! We also heard new Mysterytrain live footage, recorded last September at the Pinnacle Jam in Kempton! Along the way, we debuted a new song from Jordan White, updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1993 song by Smokin’ Guns from the archive for this week’s “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Borrowed Time’s Love Is Not Blind CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

Here is this week's playlist:

THE GOOD SEEDS – “Poor Me”
BISCUIT JAM – “Rock and Roll”
MYSTERYTRAIN – “Down in the Mine” (live)

On our next program, we welcome the return of band guests The Big Time! The group just issued their new CD, called Dreamers and Believers; we will get the lowdown on the new album and hear tracks from it! Along the way, we will update “Local Music News,” dig into the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and review Coastal Remedy’s self-titled CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

Pure Cane Sugar, Jordan White, The Hawks Blues Band and Flight 19 will provide some of the musical highlights at this year’s upcoming 46th annual Blair County Arts Festival, which will take place the weekend of May 18 and 19 at Penn State Altoona. Pure Cane Sugar’s harmonies will be part of the Saturday highlights of this year’s festival; other performers that day will include The Beatlemaniacs, Your Dad’s Friends, Hip Hop Overdrive, Dance Fairies Dance, Jerry Haines and Jay Smar. Jordan White, The Hawks and Flight 19 all perform on Sunday, along with Tree, banjo player Dan Hulse and Dance Fairies Dance. Various scholastic bands and ensembles will perform on both days as well. Admission to this year’s festival is free; for more information, visit the festival’s website, www.blaircountyartsfestival.org.

The line-up has also been set for this year’s annual Day Of Rock benefit concert for Easter Seals, which will happen on Saturday, June 1 at the Saxton Sportsmen’s Club. This year’s Day Of Rock will feature performances from Saving Jake, Backlash, Ganister, Screaming Ugly, NailDriver, Twelve and The Third Degree. There will be food vendors and giveaways during the event. Tickets are $10 per person. Organizers and musicians involved with Day Of Rock will talk about the event on the May 19 edition of the “Homegrown Rocker.”

And fans of blues will have a unique opportunity to see two of the region’s top blues axe-slingers in action this Monday night, May 6, in the debut of a new concert series. Spearheaded by Pat McGinnis, PMAC Productions will present Felix & the Hurricanes and Miss Melanie and the Valley Rats in concert at The Church In the Middle of the Block in Altoona. That show will begin at 7 p.m., and is open to all ages. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. According to McGinnis, if this initial show is well-attended, there will be more to follow, featuring other local and regional blues bands and artists.
