GUYS:
Geoff Tate (best metal vocalist ever)
Rob Halford (MOST metal vocalist ever)
Bruce Dickinson (the Air Raid Siren)
Joey Belladonna (listen to some old Anthrax - this guy is incredible)
Sebastian Bach (Sab is awesome)
Paul Stanley (classic arena rock, and more range than usually given credit for)
Chris Cornell (screw Kurt Go-Bang - this guy is the best singer songwriter of the 90s)
Robert Plant (of course)
Robin McAuley (raspy and soulful, yet powerful - too cool)
Luciano Pavarotti (didn't expect that one after the ones above, huh?) :P
Andrea Bocelli (fantastic)

GIRLS:
Jewel (if she were to sing to me, I'd be THROUGH!)
Johnette Napolitano (totally cool - Concrete Blonde is awsome)
Pat Benatar (best female rocker ever)
Nancy Wilson (powerful, yet melodic)
Janis Joplin (just too cool - so much soul, and yet totally rocks, too)

I know there's more.....

Definatly Pat benatar but don't you mean Ann Wilson, she's the front woman, Nacy plays guitar and does mostly backup vocals.

On the Male end Sebatian and James hetfield ( Yes I know James is not a wailer but he's got style )

P.S. Axle is awsome with studio magic and a million takes but really can't sing his way out of a wet paper page, he's the next best thing to William Hung live

Ronnie James Dio (THE voice of metal!)
Bruce Dickinson
Geoff Tate
Robert Plant
Ian Gillan
Ray Gillen (R.I.P.)
Matthew Barlow
Glenn Danzig
Rob Halford
Ozzy Osbourne (not so much for ability, but because his voice went so well with the music in the Sabbath days.)
Stacy J. Dunkle ;-) (hey, I may be my own worst critic, but I still have to like myself!)

Honorable mention: Scott Weiland. He gives hope to vocalists with limited lower ranges like myself, and proves that if a band would just take the time and build a setlist around the singer's ability, good things can happen. If more local musicians would do this, I might be in a band now. :)

(sorry, had to rant a little...) ;)

My two cents:

Steven Tyler - how does he do some of those things??
Robert Plant - The voice of rock n' roll
Freddie Mercury - half opera/ half rock
Chris Cornell - he can peel the paint off walls
Sammy Hagar - I love Dave, but Sammy can wail!!!
Raine Maida/Our Lady Peace - what a voice, unbelievable ability

there are some many others I can't think.....

I might catch some heat for this one, but..

Joe Elliot from Def Leppard has an awesome voice. 5 octave range. Phew, it's heavy.

thx, tonefight - I did mean Ann not Nancy...

Joe Elliott and Steven Tyler are good calls, too, esp Joe.....

Ray Gillen was one I should have thought of - been listening to Badlands a bit lately - they were awesome, Jake E. Lee is my favorite guitar player with Ozzy (don't start on me about Randy R - I personally like Jake) and Ray G had a terrific voice..... RIP

Man, there are so many singers to mention. I'd be here all day with a list and everyone pretty much mentioned a good part of them.

If I had to pick one, I'd say Paul Stanley from Kiss. That dude is a work horse. Excellent range that actually got better over the years, instead of degressing. He also a frontman that knows how to work a crowd.

An honorable mention would be Vince Gill. For those that don't listen to country, check him out. He's one of the FEW country singers I can bare. Can't forget about Mickey Thomas from Starship either.

Rhett Forrester - Riot
John Waite - The Babys, Bad English
Rob Halford - Priest
Bon Scott - AC/DC (instantly recognizeable)
Ronnie James Dio
George Jones
Etta James
Del McCoury
Elton John
Paul Stanley - KISS (hugely underrated voice)
Keith Whitley
Howlin' Wolf
Paul Rodgers - Bad Co., Free

Wow, great topic...lemme think...if I duplicate, my apologies!

-Phil Anselmo (circa the "Cowboys" era, he had a beautiful voice on "Cemetary Gates")

-Mike Matijevic of Steelheart...6 octave range!

-Robert Randolph
-Stevie Ray Vaughn
-Koko Taylor
-Steve Perry & John Cain together in the early Journey (I think it was Cain?)
-Tommy Shaw
-Jack Blades
-Nora Jones...wow.
-Christina Aguilera (ONLY on "Beautiful"...great song.)
-John Bush
-John Corabi

Locally, I enjoy hearing Wally Archer and Billy Nusom, Felix, Jeff Clapper, John and Kenny, and Vic from HF1. I also liked hearing John McKnight, Chuck Budzina, and Crystal Cameron.

Sebastian Bach, old Phil Anselmo(Vulgar Display of Power), Tom Araya, Angela Gossow, actually the best metal voice I think I've heard belongs to my friends band in Pittsburgh, Shattered Soul....theyre on Screaming Ferret Wreckords, the dude is just amazing....

The singer from Hypocrisy(can't recall his name) is pretty damn good too...

I really dig the vocal stylings of Maynard (tool, perfect circle, duh) and Chino (deftones, team sleep). Most people dont like this guys voice but i do, Ian from the Lost Prophets. Also the lead singer from Dead Poetic.

If Joe Elliot has a 5 octave range, I'd love to hear it. heh Pushing it, I'd probably say 3 would be the most. Vic from HF1 would most likely know though. Just for sh!ts and giggles, I'm going to look into it as well. ;)

I was told he had a 5 octave range, I don't know if that is correct though.
