What have you been turned on to lately?
I wanna hear some stuff that you've been newly introduced to and can't seem to stop playing. Don't care if it's old or new, it may be new to someone.
Here's mine lately:
Townes Van Zandt- Listen to "Waiting Around to die" and of course he wrote "Pancho and Lefty" plus he has a ton more.
Lucero- Great Band if you like The Gaslight Anthem Or Wilco
The Gaslight Anthem- Check Out "Here's Lookin At You Kid"
Tom Waits- ANYTHING SERIOUSLY
Chuck Ragan- This Guy used to sing for Hot Water Music, His Solo Stuff Is like Lucero
If anyone has anything different that the metal scene has I'm all ears. So sick of this "SUICIDESILENCEBULLETFORMYDEATHCOREIMATOTALBADASSDONTFUCKWITHMEYOUBIGBULLY" bs that I can't even take it. I get it. You're evil. I won't fuck with you. Not because I think you will kick my ass, but because I think you need a hug and mommy and daddy didn't really mean it, they just didn't know any better.
Don't get me wrong. I'm pissed off. I'm just a bit deeper than that.
Plus, I would fuck all those pussies up to the point where mascara would be unneccessary.
anyways, gimme your jams.

My neighbor gave me a bunch of CD's he had ripped onto a hard-drive, and he has pretty good tastes...
He turned me on to Townes years ago, and this different crop is almost as good. I got a couple Buddy Miller CD's, he's not new, but new for me, and a hell of a songwriter. I probably like him because he uses the bluegrass-song structure, even though it's not bluegrass. It's more alt-country/edgy singer-songwritery stuff, I've been listening to the Best of The Hightone Years, and he and his wife kill it.
I also got a live album from Shaver done in 1995, which was Eddie Shaver's peak. He was a BADASS guitar-player, and the songwriting is top-shelf, because it's Billy-Joe Shaver.
There were a few others, like compilations of rock singers doing country songs, which turned out better than you'd think. There's a version of Folsom Prison Blues by Keb Mo' that's actually blues, and some nice Hank Sr. covers to boot.
I'm not listening to much new stuff lately, hopefully that changes soon.

Lowender- What Lucero do you play, and where can I check out your band?

Lately, locals include Twisted & Used, Ninetail, 10 Million Devils, Samara (haven't seen them much lately, damn), and Naildriver
lolz.
Much love for Samara, Naildriver and 10 million Devils. Even if I haven't been jamming much Metal as of late, it will always have a place in my heart. Besides, some of the best dudes I ever met are in those bands.

It sounds like a lot of people are diggin' on some country in this thread. I'm playing in a country project now, so I'm listening to some new stuff. Recently, I got hipped to Dierks Bentley. His stuff is reminiscent of country out of the 80s: good production, and poppy but not so poppy that it's not country anymore. And the songwriting goes beyond the, "I'm more country than thou" schtick that's unfortunately become pervasive in a lot of Nashville songwriting.
Also, I know that this probably kills any country credibility I have, but I must admit that I really dig a lot of Jason Aldean's stuff. I know he's pretty much the poster boy of country that's really just hard rock with a southern draw, but his stuff's so well put together and performed. Plus his band absolutely smokes.

Are you talking about Live at Smith's Olde Bar? I got hipped to that album years ago, and then I bought it the immediate moment I saw it in a store. The thing I always liked about that disc is that it literally just sounds like a good local band playing at the local watering hole - even to the point that they decide to just change the setlist because one of the members feels like it: "Let's do Hottest Thing In Town!" "Yeah, let's do that one!" Brendan O' Brien - yeah, the Brendan O' Brien who produced a lot of the best alternative rock albums in the 90s - actually plays guitar on a few of the tracks.songsmith wrote: I also got a live album from Shaver done in 1995, which was Eddie Shaver's peak. "He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

That's the one. It sounds like a really well-done mix, straight from the mixing console. We played it at work for awhile, and I've been telling everybody I talk to about it. It's the band I wanted to be in back in 1995... country, but with a guitar-player who uses a Marshall. Eddie Shaver was an amazing dude. His first guitar was Duane Allman's Strat, and Dickie Betts was his first guitar teacher. hard to go wrong with that!bassist_25 wrote:Are you talking about Live at Smith's Olde Bar?
