Here is a good one..need some advice and or ideas on what to do.
I recently became unemployed due to the fact that my employer could not afford to pay my wages... instead of burning bridges I opted to leave. With this I am getting Unemployment, because I never got a paycheck and what not....My Claim was granted.
Now as a spiteful blast back at me...my former Employer is turning in my band to the IRS stating we are not claiming profit. They are telling the IRS im Self Employed...Needless to say my band could not keep the bills paid lol...its just for fun more than anything.
If you are in a band do you claim what you make from the gig?
Ive never though I would have to try and figure this one out...if any of you out there in Rockpage Land have any valuable Tid-bits for me that would rock...
The Nerve of some peeps..lol
Even though its a hassle I prefer to keep it on the up and up, If you only do a few shows a month chances are with equipment purchase and mileage to gigs, practice, trips to the music store you would owe very little anyway.
I don't think you could get denied unemployment for a few gigs a month but make sure you keep track of everything and turn it in this year.

Don't bitch to me about the economy while you're still buying Chinese products.
Good advice for all working musicians. Even if you only play a couple times a month, it is income. I personally do report my income to the IRS just to be safe. I don't name the band or anything else about playing gigs, only that x amount was made playing in a band. I just give my CPA the info, I'm not even sure what IRS form it's applied to. I can check if anyone is interested.

Possible jail time and fines - or - claim it and pay taxes. Hmmm, which to choose.jon5150 wrote:Here is a good one..need some advice and or ideas on what to do.

Just claim it. Claim depreciation on your gear too, then you won't owe as much.
"Turn it down!"
"What?"
"What?"
