Spot Monitors

Awhile back I saw a band playing with only spot monitors on the stage and no regular monitors, I've never played with them or anything and was wondering what opinions everyone may have concerning there use.

The ones that I have used have been both the powered and non-powered version of the Galaxy Hotspot. The powered version has both mic and line inputs, as well as xlr and 1/4". They sound surprisingly good for only being a 4" speaker, especially in the vocal range. Since you're stage volumes aren't too terribly loud, they may work well for you. But if you get a bass player with a 700 watt full stack, forget about it.

I was thinking one regular monitor front and center and a couple spots on the side and for the drummer, our new bass player is running direct too so his volume shouldn't be a problem, bringing him out of the spot monitors maybe though, the Carvins have a 5" speaker and a pretty low frequency response, I may get a couple and if nothing else they'll make nice stereo speakers!

I have to agree on the Galaxy Hotspots... they're kind of pricey, but worth every penny in truck-pack space and wear and tear on your back, as well. They're 100W, right there 2 feet from your face, 140W if you add a slave speaker, and they're SO versatile with the XLR mic input and line-in... I've used them for acoustic guitar amp, vocal monitor, I used them to mix remotely at the PSU Dance Marathon because you weren't allowed to turn the house PA up loud enough to hear, and they kick ass hooked up as a pair to amp a CD player. You'd be surprised at the low-end and SPL.---->JMS
