HOMEGROWN ROCKER 8/28/11 (HIGHER FIVES)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 28 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

Thanks to our guests, Johnstown indie rockers Higher Fives, and the music collective they are part of, My Idea Of Fun (www.myideaoffun.org). We met the band members, and heard songs from Higher Fives’ new recording, Cystems. We also heard new songs from several My Idea Of Fun bands and artists; including Emmett and Mary, Dan Oatman, Technological Epidemic and Mean Streak. We also updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1985 song from Altoona’s I.O.U. from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Rigel’s Xenophobia CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

COINMONSTER – “Watching the Insects”
NAILDRIVER – “Executioner”
HIGHER FIVES – “Junior”
EMMETT AND MARY – “The Summer’s Pull”
HIGHER FIVES – “Motown and Gomorrah”
DAN OATMAN – “Lemonade”
HIGHER FIVES – “Employee of the Moth”
TECHNOLOGICAL EPIDEMIC – “Blowin’ in the Mind”

HOUR TWO:

THE SUNFLOWER SPECTACLE – “The Cambria County Fair Ship Song”
MEAN STREAK – “Aint I?”
HIGHER FIVES – “(No Paradise) All Inferno All the Time”
RIGEL – “The Art of Going Nowhere”
HIGHER FIVES – “Enriching the Saints”
I.O.U. – “Listen with Your Ears” (1985, Local Music Flashback)
HIGHER FIVES – “New World Order Women and the Men Who Love Them”

On our next show, our guest will be longtime Johnstown musician and current solo artist Ron Gallucci. A former member of The Kick and Inside Out, and current bass player with Ribbon Grass, Ron recently issued his first solo CD, Strange Days. We’ll get inside the creation of the CD, and hear songs from it. We’ll also update “Local Music News,” dig into the archive for another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Chuck Mason & Blue Reality’s You Know It’s Time CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Ron Gallucci visits the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night!

In Local Music News…

Candlelight Red has announced the official release date for their first studio album with Imagen Records. That debut, The Wreckage, will hit the streets on September 27. Candlelight Red just performed an outdoor show in downtown State College this past Saturday with Egypt Central and Eve To Adam; and they will rejoin Saving Abel on the road this Thursday night at Peabody’s in Cleveland, Ohio.

It’s déjà vu all over again for Mindspine, who again has announced that they are going their separate ways. The group had broken up last year before returning with a new line-up earlier this year.

Altoona hard rockers Original Sin have resurfaced with a new lineup. The current edition of the group features lead guitarist Keenan Brown, bassist Nate Nagle, guitarist/singer Sean Beckel and drummer Trever Dangel. The group performs original hard rock and metal. Original Sin will be performing a free set this Tuesday afternoon starting at noon at Penn State Altoona’s Laurel Pavilion.
