"Some Kind Of Wonderful"-- Grand Funk Railroad.
Never fails. Older crowd, younger crowd, rednecks, college girls... everybody gets on the dance floor. You can get folks to sing along (Jeez, I love audience participation!) or anything you want. I know it's a 30-year-old song, but it still flies pretty well for a party crowd.

"War Pigs"-- Sabbath.
The other one was the audience favorite... this is MY favorite. Ever. Period. This song should be required for young metal bands to learn... it's all there, powerful groove, HUGE fun to play, and the lyric is just as relevant today, perhaps even more so. You wanna try something fun? Have the singer, just out of the blue, go, "Generals gathered in their mass-SESSSSS!!...", and let the audience finish it. At that point, you practically own a metal crowd.

"Lager & Ale"-- Kim Mitchell Band.
Best song nobody ever heard. It's about being blind drunk in a bar and falling in lust with a stripper. Not that I know anything about that...

-Favorite To Cover? Good god, how many pages am I allowed. I guess if I had to limit it to 2 songs, I'd have to go with:

1. "Some Kind Of Wonderful"- No, I'm not copying Johnny, LOL, but when I played with Banditos, on occasion we would drop a few verses of "Stealin'" by Uriah Heep into the middle of Grand Funk with 5 part harmonies and it would make the hair on my arms stand up...

2. "I'm Your Captain"- A few years ago, Bobby Watters had to work out of town for a week and I was lucky enough to get the call from Felix to fill the Hurricanes drum chair, doing 6 shows in 4 days. For one of the shows, we played out at The Redman Club in Everett, and it must have been 110 degrees. I was afraid to hit my cymbals, you coulda fried an egg on them! But we did this one, and did some monster harmony on it, which I still remember to this day. I still love to see Felix and co. nail this one! Bobby plays it better than I ever could!

War Pigs all the way! I could play that at every gig for the rest of my career and never get tired of it.

Another fun one was Banditos by the Refreshments. Kevin will sympathize with that one!

From the Hair Force One sets, I'd say Sweet Child o' Mine because I can just strum cowboy chords for six minutes and check out the ladies . . .

Heretic Anthem....yea right. My feet would fall off and I would die of an asthma attack! But in all seriousness, it's fun to cover tough stuff for me. It gives me a challenge like tool or dt. But on the other hand, it's so much fun to play easy going tunes. You know, just kick back and have some fun!

The song I saw most covered ever is Sober by tool. Every metal/rock band has done that at least once. But I don't know how the rhythm goes!

Back in the day, when I was in Ask A Stranger, we did a mean version of "Go For a Soda" by Kim Mitchell and "Lunatic Fringe" by Red Rider. I really liked playing both songs and although they are not currently my favorite tunes, I liked them plenty when we were playing them. Hats off to the above mention of "Lager and Ale" by Kim Mitchell. Great song. Great energy.

I always wondered what bands were thinking by playing covers that they admittedly didn't like. Right on stage they would introduce a song by insulting it and then play it like they hated it too. Often times these songs didn't fit the rest of their set list. Sometimes you would hear a band do Zep, Floyd, Van Halen all night and then throw in "MONY, MONY" or "Johnny B. Goode" ?????? As Seinfeld would say "What's up with that?" Variety is great but schizophrenia is a problem. Sorry for the editorial.

there are so many cool songs to cover but i think my favorite is when we play the animals album from pink floyd every once in awhile if the crowd is right well take off on a trip to the farm and people that love floyd really appreciate it because ive never heard another cover band play any animals when you play covers your always looking for the right opportunity to play stuff that you love that might not be commercially acceptable

Whole Lotta Love, Good times, Bad Times, and Kashmir. (Yes, even with the string part. It was played through a guitar synth) You know, it's kind of funny; despite the well-known discography of Zepplin, when you get down to it, most of their stuff isn't "dance friendly".

The only Aerosmith tune I ever did was Mama Kin. We played it once at a gig, and it really didn't go over, so we never played it again.

I never did any U2, but I always thought Desire would be a great song to do.

BTW withhunt, Acid Reflux doesn't just play Animals for the fun of it, like sloppy like you would think a band would play a whole album they do ocassionally when the mood strikes...they play the shit out of it! It's awesome! Complete with pigs, sheep and dogs...

"Mama Kin" always went over pretty well for us... we also did "Come Together," "Walkin' The Dog," "Dream On," and "Walk This Way" over the years, and all did well, although "Dream On" was a b*tch to sing, and being a "slow dance" song, nobody applauded or anything, so it seemed like a lot of work for nothing at the time. I've since discovered that applause is cool, but I don't need it to function.------>JMS

One of the reasons it probaly didn't go over, is there were only like 10 people there. *LOL*

What does everyone think of the new Aerosmith album? I heard that cover of the Amboy Dukes tune (which of course, was a cover for them too) and I thought it smoked. I really haven't liked anything they've done since Nine Lives (though Girls of Summer was a catchy Pop-Rock tune) so it's good to hear them putting out some rockin' stuff.

The "Honkin with Bobo" album is pretty good. I like the fact that Aerosmith and Clapton both put out blues cover albums in the same two week period.

This is a good sign for some of the blues bands in the area. It should help to raise awareness and maybe peak interest. Vinnie......

I like Nugent's version of "Baby Please Don't Go" a little better, although Aerosmith DID have harmonica on theirs, which always gets points from me. They play the hell out of it on radio, so it'll get old for me real soon. I haven't heard anything else from the album, I hope it's good. The Clapton record intrigues me, as a Robert Johnson fan... I haven't heard much from it but I like what I've heard. Love them blues!---->JMS

We do Still Haven't Found What I'm Lookin For and With Or Without You from U2, Sweet Emotion (as well as other from past bands) from Aerosmith, and Rock and Roll and Stairway to Heaven from Zeppelin. It's fun and challenging to turn a song that normally isn't acoustic and make it work. Hell, we do an acoustic version of Crazy Train. Whether it sounds alright or not, I guess you all can be the judge, but it's sure fun playing it.

Out of any songs there are to play out there, I always like to go back to what started me playing....Kiss. Any classics by them rule!!! I remember being a kid with my brother listening to Kiss albums and playing air guitar with a fly swatter while my brother would dump all the toys out of an elephant toy box we had to play along with the drums. Something even funnier is to realize years later what they were referring to with the lyrics of Plaster Caster, while belting it out as loud as we could in our toddler years. I pitty what we put our parents through. heh
