So I got a new phone...
So I have finally entered the world of Android! Any suggestions for cool apps? I already grabbed Shazam, Google Sky Map, and a good barcode scanner.

depends
Depends on what you are doing in your life. The "Keyring" app is very cool, keeps all those discount and point cards available. Also "Taskos" is nice, little app for to do lists..
I also use some things like "Wifi Analyzer" and then the general things like "Newegg", "Amazon", "Ebay", "Kindle", etc.
If you use Chrome at home then you might also want to check out "Chrome Marks Lite", once you login it will bring all your bookmarks from chrome to your phone..
Aside from that there are a lot of games and stuff that you have to check out..
If your phone gets rooted then you have to have "Rom Manager", it will allow you to do a full system backup and then also try a lot of different roms..
Have fun!

If you have Verizon and waited until after July 6th, I'm sorry that you missed out on unlimited data.
Anyway...I like the Photobucket and Dropbox apps. Photobucket is great because it can be configured to automatically post the pictures you take to a Photobucket account. Creating an automatic backup of them.
Dropbox is great because you can put documents and such in it on you computer and then have them available for viewing on your device. Great for things like hotel confirmation numbers or anything you want to view on your device.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I've been getting spoiled big time by working in State College, as they have full 4G there. It's unreal how fast it is compared to 3G here in Altoona. But, the Verizon rep that I deal with on a weekly basis for work says that Altoona should be going 4G by the beginning of winter. One can hope!
@ Russ: I only went Droid with my wife because VZW was getting rid of unl. data. We got in 5 hours before they cut it off, so we have unlimited for life thanks to grandfathering.

I am thinking about getting my first phone like that - prob an iphone - but I am confused about where to buy it. I have always gotten cheap 'free' phones at the verizon kiosk in the mall (basic - I mean I don't even txt) but as far as an iphone, is it cheaper to buy your iphone at a store and then how does that work as far as my service with verizon? Can you even get them at a store or does it have to be purchased thru your carrier?

Here's the rundown...
There are pros and cons to getting your phones in a main retailer (IE Verizon, AT&T or *gag* Sprint). The pros are that those folks know their stuff cold, and they always have a wide selection of phones. The con is that they work on comission, and are going to try to talk you into all kinds of stuff you don't need.
Other retailers (Walmart, Best Buy, Radio Shack) are authorized retailers for those companies. The prices are usually lower for the phones, but the tradeoff is that they don't have as many phones, and in general, we don't get the level of training that the major companies (VZW, AT&T, *gag* Sprint) gets. We work hard to know our stuff, though.
You need to balance need versus want. An IPhone is a great phone, but do you want to pay the extra $30 a month for data, which the IPhone, Droids, and Blackberries require? If all you want to do is get a simple phone just for calling, go with either AT&T or Verizon and get a simple flip phone.
Also, don't be afraid to look into prepaid options.
I'm back at work tomorrow at Walmart, Amy, come see me and I'll walk you through it with no pressures to buy.

No I want more than a simple flip phone - I am ready to branch out and want internet and music storage on my phone. Thanks for the info. I might hold off on this kind of phone for awhile if the guys at the kiosk today can give me some satisfaction with my current phone. Its only 7 months old and my battery won't charge at all! Maybe they will give me new battery or something because this is obviously a defect?
I have generally found the service there to be pretty good so we'll see.

If you want a cheap iPhone, go with the 3GS for $49 (Why 3Gs is still worth buying)
I wouldn't go with the iPhone 4 yet because it has issues and the new one should be here in the fall.
I'm a proud owner of a jailbroken 3G (Yes, the discontinued model, so lame.)
I would at least play with all of them at a retail store and decide which one you like (don't know if this happens a lot, but the mall AT&T store even has the phones hooked up to phone numbers, so you can make calls!)
Windows Phone however, ehhh.. I'd wait awhile for a good one of those.
I've never used an Android or Blackberry so I can't comment on those. A lot of people are getting Droids now.
and of course, TRG is the man to see

It is the data speed, Joe. 4G is faster than 3G.undercoverjoe wrote:I am a digital noob. What exactly is the difference between 3G and 4G?
They are saying that 4g won't be available in this area till some time this fall or winter. You need to have a phone that is compatible with the speeds to get the full affect of it. They are saying that the iPhone 5 won't be 4g. But most droids already are.

3G is like dialup internet compared to 4G speeds. Its like a Yugo vs. A Hemicuda. State College has 4G. Ran a speed test there against a buddy of mine who rocks the Iphone 4. No contest, i smoked him out of the building. With 4G speeds, I can download and install an average sized app in under 30 seconds compared to 2 plus minutes for his 3G
