HOMEGROWN ROCKER 6/5/11

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 5 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

Originally, we were to have band guests, but the logistics for scheduling this week’s interview fell through; hopefully we’ll reschedule The Whatleys’ appearance for later this year. In lieu of having guests, we again used the opportunity to empty the “Homegrown Rocker” mailboxes and check out some of the new recordings that have arrived in recent weeks. We debuted new music from The Whatleys, Mindspine, Siamese Sundown, Souls Of Rebellion, Dream Device, Ben Dumm & the Deviants and Ovlo. Along the way, we updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1999 song by the Full Time Kings from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” ventured “Across State Lines” to check out a song by upstate New York native American bluesman Jimmy Wolf, and we reviewed The Atomic Drops’ self-titled CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” Once again, a busy week!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

JOHN CHARNEY – “Sojourn”
CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND – “Tupelo Tree”
THE WHATLEYS – “Rules We Live By”
GROUND RESONANCE – “Punch”
MINDSPINE – “Brainwashed”
SPIRIT LOST – “Dreams”
SIAMESE SUNDOWN – “Shake”
LOVEBETTIE – “Are You Out There”
SOULS OF REBELLION – “Don’t Trust Your Eyes”
FAITH IN EXILE – “One False Word”

HOUR TWO:

THE CLOVER – “Last Rock Soldiers”
LOVEHATETHING – “Exit Game”
DREAM DEVICE – “Washed Away”
THE ATOMIC DROPS – “I Might Be Drunk”
BEN DUMM & THE DEVIANTS – “Snake Oil”
FULL TIME KINGS – “Everyday’s Saturday” (1999, Local Music Flashback)
JIMMY WOLF – “Hell Hound on My Trail” (Across State Lines)
STERLING KOCH – “I’m a Bluesman”
MYSTERYTRAIN – “It’s Alright” (performed live 7/31/10 at Berry Farm, State College)
THE GOOD SEEDS – “She’s Half a Pill”
OVLO – “That”
ABSOLUTION – “What Makes Me Strong”

For our next show, we welcome the return of Centre County heavy rockers Mindspine! We’ll meet the group’s latest roster, learn their latest news, and hear new recorded songs from them. We’ll also update “Local Music News,” raid the local music archive for another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Zelazowa’s Love Is Lunacy CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” Mindspine returns to the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Upcoming guests and specials include:

In Local Music News…

Former members of Pittsburgh Celtic/folk band Ceann are slowly picking up the pieces after tragedy brought the group to an end earlier this year. Four months after the early February death of Ceann lead singer Patrick Halloran in a Vermont auto accident, former Ceann bandmates Jeffrey Hoag and Brian Fitzgerald have announced that they will perform a tribute show to Patrick at the upcoming Penn-Mar Irish Festival in Glen Rock (near York) on Saturday, June 18.

Pittsburgh medieval metal rockers Dethlehem have issued their second full-length CD, called The Ghorusalem Codex, Vol. 2: Of Magick & Tyranny. The group celebrated the new disc with a special CD release show this past Friday night at The Smiling Moose in Pittsburgh. Dethlehem returns to State College this coming Friday night, sharing a bill with Collapse at the Darkhorse Tavern.

And after a six-year run on the state’s stages, Altoona’s Spirit Lost has decided to go their separate ways. The group recently played their farewell show at Magoo’s in Cresson. Guitarist Brian Smith and bassist Russ Patterson are reportedly working on a new band project.
