HOMEGROWN ROCKER 5/22/11

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 22 edition of Rocky 99 and Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

With no guests scheduled this week, we used the opportunity to get caught up on new local/regional recordings that arrived at “Homegrown Rocker” headquarters in recent weeks. We debuted numerous new songs from C&M, Rapid Fire, Elizabeth Pugh, Shyster, Tree The Band, 44Mag, Jen Bertiaux and Zelazowa. Along the way, we updated “Local Music News,” dug a 2001 song by Balistic from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” went “Across State Lines” to hear a song by Atlanta’s Heather Luttrell, and we reviewed Rob Carlton’s Seven Thunders CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE DOWNFALL – “Take Time”
INSIDE OUT – “Vampire Eyes”
C&M – “Sorry Just Isn’t Enough”
MATT OTIS – “Voices”
RAPID FIRE – “Unbreakable”
E.V.K. – “City Lights”
ELIZABETH PUGH – “1987”
HANNAH BINGMAN – “Finished Fine Done”
SHYSTER – “Callin’ Me Out”

HOUR TWO:

HYBRID ICE – “Faith Without Works”
TREE THE BAND – “Old Plank Road”
ROB CARLTON – “I Know What It Feels Like”
44MAG – “50 Miles”
BALISTIC – “Into the Grey” (2001, Local Music Flashback)
HEATHER LUTTRELL – “Wanting” (Across State Lines)
JEN BERTIAUX – “Paper Boy”
ZELAZOWA – “Parts Become Whole”
THE WHATLEYS – “Whiskey and Failure”

On our next program, we take a 2-hour journey down Local Music Memory Lane on our annual Memorial Day Special! One of the most popular shows we do every year, we’ll showcase music from past area bands and artists, some spanning as far back as the ‘60s and ‘70s! During the show’s last half hour, we’ll commemorate some of the musicians we have lost along the way. Celebrate the heritage of this area’s music scene with the annual Memorial Day Special edition of the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

JUNE 5 – THE WHATLEYS
JUNE 12 – MINDSPINE
JUNE 19 – FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL
JULY 3 – VISION TO NONE
JULY 10 – ZELAZOWA
JULY 17 – MONSTER TRACK SUPERGROUP
JULY 24 – STEVE McCULLEY MEMORIAL JAM PREVIEW
JULY 31 – GYPSY CARAVAN

In Local Music News…

Rain Must Fall has a song in the running to appear on a motion picture soundtrack. The group is involved in an online contest to get their song “Parallel” included in the soundtrack of the upcoming movie Renee, currently in production and expected in theaters next year. For more information and to cast your vote for Rain Must Fall, visit the website www.reneethemovie.com/soundtrack.)

Candlelight Red has announced that they will play several southeastern tour dates early next month in support of national recording group Egypt Central. The mini-tour will include shows in Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Arkansas. Candlelight Red just performed last night at 30 Something in Altoona. The group will issue their full-length debut CD, produced by David Ivory, next month.

Some band changes have been announced for the upcoming Tsunami Benefit at 30 Something. False Icons and Samara have departed the bill, while Hope Theatre and Highway Divide have been added. The benefit, raising money for Red Cross Disaster Relief to assist in Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster relief, will take place at 30 Something on Saturday night, June 4.

Terrence Simien & the Zydeco Experience and Baltimore jam band The Bridge have been added to the line-up of the upcoming third annual AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival in Johnstown in August. A benefit concert recently took place to help out a Somerset county musician. Diesel bass player Tanner Reffner was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, and faces a double lung transplant. A benefit show took place earlier this month at Bailey’s Circle 219 near Somerset, with the bands White Horse, The Dirty Dogz, Mr. Bickle, Diesel, and The Big Canuck donating their talents to help raise more than $6,500 toward Tanner’s medical expenses. A website has been established through the Children’s Organ Transplant Association for making online donations to help Tanner; that website is www.cotafortannerdr.com.

And young Hollidaysburg rockers E.V.K. have announced the date and location for their CD release party. The group will celebrate the release of their debut CD, Fat Vinny Was Here, on Saturday, June 11, from noon to 3 PM at Music Emporium in Altoona. Admission is free, and hot dogs will be available.
