drummer
It's Mike Mangini. However, what's most shocking is the fact that Rod Morgenstein was not auditioned!?!?!

Re: drummer
Mangini did very well in that video, looks like a good fit.Diavolo wrote:It's Mike Mangini. However, what's most shocking is the fact that Rod Morgenstein was not auditioned!?!?!
No Morgenstein probably because he's almost 60 years old.
When we gonna get together and play some drums Dom? Where the hell have you been?

The second video is up, and HOLY CRAP did they have some amazing drummers try out!!! They truly did audition some of the best drummers in the world. I think they could put out some amazing albums with any of the drummers shown in the audition videos so far. I'm feeling better about a Portnoy-less DT! It is NOT the end of the world!!!

I think Mangini did blow them all away as far as auditions go. He played the songs more spot on and has a great personality. He seems like he fits the best personality wise as well.
Derek Roddy was terrible, he looked confused.
Lang and Virgil are both amazing, but they are more working drummers where they seem like it would be more of a job. They also have their own set styles that aren't really fitting to the DT style.
Marco is the shit, however, he's just a little goofy for DT.
I can see why they pick Mangini.

At first, I thought the DT drummer departure and subsequent search was becoming way too dramatic. But, I have to admit the videos are pretty interesting. In the little bit of playing they do present in the video, it's pretty wild to hear how Lang and Donati tried to add their own interpretation of the material. I would argue this is a positive but Jordan Rudess seems to disagree. Why wouldn't they want to freshen up the old tunes? In any case, I have even more respect for Portnoy's contribution to DT.
I've picked up quite a bit of Marco's solo stuff and like it a lot. It's got insane playing, memorable melodies, prog bits, and a sense of humor . Lang's and Donati's solo stuff is not so memorable. Again, as a drummer I love their playing but you have to begin to wonder why these monster drummers are without working bands. The DT audition videos shed some light on this.
On another note, if I auditioned and did not get the gig, I have to be a bit angry at how my playing and image are being used by DT.

If they picked Mangini, they are way better off. Check out Mike's stuff with Steve Vai and Extreme, as well as the Annihilator stuff too. I respect the hell out of Portnoy, but I think he is way overrated when compared with Mangini, Donati, Lang, and the like. A big drumset does not make you a monster drummer. I know that drumming is not a competition, but any of the cats that DT auditioned can play circles around Portnoy. When you really examine his solos, his stuff is really not that hard to play.
Now whether DT can pick up the slack from all the business end of things that Mike handled, that is another story. We'll see!

That was really awesome watching video of the phone call to Mr. Mangini. I think his reaction showed that he wanted it the most. It really seems like it was a dream come true for him.
Ain't it funny that the only American to try out, got the job. And oddly enough, he's also named Mike! I'm pretty excited to hear what they'll put out in the coming years. Fingers crossed for another I&W or Awake!!!!
