Just something different

Post by Killjingle »

we all know Metallica, and their Garage Days CD was a super cool project. what if youre group could record a 5 song cd with nothing but you're renditions of other ppl's songs? what would you cover? one song outside of the box of your band's musical direction would be an added bonus ( like fat vinny doing a blues rendition of master of puppets ) lets be creative, have a happy holiday

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

I have always wanted to take Borderline by Madonna and make it crushingly heavy. And change the words a little so it's not such a girlie song.

I'd love to try to play heavier distorted versions of classical pieces form Bach or Mozart. I know its been done by Malmsteen and others that were classically trained, but I'd like to give it a shot or at least hear others do it.

Well jeez, I gotta comment on this one don't I?, This is just me cause, what's on our CD's is very much a group decision but hmm, 5 just covers........

1. New Frontier by Donald Fagan, (Always liked Steely Dan but their stuff has been done)

2. Man in a Box by Alice in Chains (Anybody here figure me for an Alice if Chains fan? didn' think so, but yeah)

3. It's probably me, by Sting, ( we might actually do this one (from Lethal Weapon 3)

4. Sad but True, by Metallica (Master of Puppets?...nah)

5. Jeremy, by Pearl Jam

I think it would be interesting to see what country songs would come up on this list but that's a different thread I guess.

1. Rollins Band - Tearing :something about the ending is brutal
2. Misfits - Scream :this song is punk and melodic
3. Johnny Cash - When A Man Comes Around, or something of his. His stuff is a goldmine.
4. Black Sabbath - Killing Yourself To Live : I love sabbath with Oz
5. Jimi Hendrix - If 6 was 9 (If 666 was 911: slight return)

hidden track: Link Wray's classic "Rumble"

some of these songs are in my top 25, while others are songs that I just think would be cool to just record a new spin to.

If u wanna hear a spin on something, when the Deviance cd is released there is a version of Devil Inside by INXS that u may find interesting.

u know Vin if I wanted to hear someone do a cool version of a country song, I would like to hear you do a Jennings tune, but bluesify it. Ramblin Man has a very cool intro. Or maybe Martyrdom do Luchenbach Texas in a sickening fast thrash beat

Funny you should mention that, We've been talking about maybe Vinny-izing a Waylon song ever since he died. Hmmm I'll have to get back to you on that.

My side project, Spheres of Anguish, is in the process of redoing a few Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Paganini songs. We're doing some shit with classical christmas pieces too. It's all duel guitar shredding out classical shit but, not really like Malmsteen, it's more metaled out, like real thrashy and more epic with less focus on showmanship and more focus on music. Nothing serious but fun. Here's the top 5 we're doing now:
1. Bach - tocatta in Dm
2. Paganini - caprice 24 in Am
3. Spanish Romanza
4. Grieg - in the hall of the mountain king
5. Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata, Adagio Sostenuto

As for Martyrdom, we are thinking of redoing Cop Killers, death metal style....

My former band No Limit did a re-make of J. Frank Wilson's "Last Kiss" with a heavey edge to the chorus. Believe it or not, we also played our version of Pink's "Like A Pill". I would like to do Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire". I think Naughty By Nature's "OPP" would be a fun project. How about Queen's "Bicycle"? Or, Billy Ray Cyrus's "Achey Breaky Heart". Ok, I have my beer bong "Hong Bong Fu-i" talking to me, so I will come with more later. Hong Bong Fu-i is gonna make The Easter Bunny look funny!!!  -

Well lets see. If I had only a choice of 5 songs it would have to be these.
Pantera-Fucking Hostile
S.T.P.-Crackerman
Korn-Blind
Drowning Pool-Bodies
Coal Chamber-Loco
Atleast for the most part I'm sure that is what I would do.There 's so damn many to choose from that would be a tuffy.

5 Covers

Post by tornandfrayed »

Dead & Bloated- STP (Core)
Cats in the Cradle- Harry Chapin
In My Darkest Hour- Megadeth (So Far, So Good, So What)
What's Up?- 4 Non-Blondes
Bleed for Me- Black Label Society (1919 Eternal)

There are so many great songs it is hard to pick and the more you think about it the harder it gets, anyone remember "Life is a Rock(But the radio rolled me)" or how about "Rock and Roll Lullabye"?

Here are a few of the songs I would love to see redone

Queensryche- The Lady Wore Black
Blues Traveller- Just Wait
Sugarloaf- Don't Call us We'll call you
Savatage- Hand full of Rain
Fates Warning- Island in the stream

Does anyone remember the insturmental song "Music Box Dancer" ?
I think a blisteringly heavy version of that song would be cool........

I do remember that.. Music box dancer. I can do that on piano and pick at it on the guitar. I don't know.. it would be like hearing the Transiberian Orchestra's version of that Carol of the bells... or Metalica with the Symphony doing Paster of Muppets... But the scary thing is.. I can hear it.

I was at the Deviance/Wake up Screaming show at Legends this past saturday and I heard a remake of Simon and Garfunkles, Scarborough Fair... Does anyone know who redid that? I want it!

1. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - The Animals
2. Over and Over - Black Sabbath (from Mob Rules)
3. See You In Black - Blue Oyster Cult (from Heaven Forbid)
4. Justice - Atomic Opera (from For Madmen Only)
5. Our Lady - Deep Purple (from Who Do We Think We Are?)

Honorable Mention (hidden track, etc.): Die With Your Boots On - Iron Maiden

Here's a nice mix:

1. Hold on Loosely - 38 Special
2. Humans Being (or Year to the Day) - Van Halen
3. Jibboom - Steve Vai
4. Bleeding Me - Metallica
5. Lines in the Sand - Dream Theater
My favorite band can do better unison solos then your favorite band.

Here's a couple that I think would be cool to rock out a bit:

1) Back door man - The Doors
2) Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
3) Dirty White Boy - Foreigner
4) Rock and Roll Ain't noise pollution - AC/DC (super heavy Grindcore style!)
5) Dust in the Wind - Kansas (I could here this as an Alice in Chains acoustic sounding version, really dark with super vocal harmonies!)

Get back-- Beatles
You Dropped A Bomb On ME-- Gap Band
Dust In The Wind-- Kansas (but shred-style)

Oh, and Savatage did a kick-ass version of "Hall of The Mountain King" on the album of the same name... I just saw the vid on VH-1 Classic Metal Mania the other day.----->JMS
