Outdoor woodburners

Post by lector »

Does anyone own one or do you know someone who does? Trying to get some opinions on which woodburners are better than the others and why. The two brands that I hear the most are Freedom and Mahoning.

Been using a mahoning for close to twenty years. I would imagine I've also burned a sizable state parks worth of wood.

I use the furnace to heat two houses which are not exactly small.

The bigest thing I can think of right now is to check on the door closing methods used. If the door doesn't seal perfect you will burn a much higher amount of wood. The newer mahonings have a clamp like system which is an inprovment over the older models. You will also be replacing the rope seal on the doors even year or two.

Another thing would be the grates, look for one which will allow you to burn different fuels. Some allow u to remove a section of grate to burn coal.

I'm burning a combo of wood and coal at this time, its a hotter fire.

I will also tell you depending on how its fired its either going to smoke alot at times or very little.

Hey appreciate the info...

The difference I hear is that the freedom is easier to load...price difference of $20 (big savings for Mahoning) I'll have to check to see how the Freedom door closes. Thanks again..

Is the freedom the furnace that loads from the top front on an angle?

If it is I'd never want that furnace design ,because when you open that door flames and smoke will be coming out. I can't imagine getting close enough to load it.

No loads from thr front same as Mahoning exept doest have the "baffle" in the same location...basically open the door and chuck the wood in.
