Bass DI ?

Post by Jasaoke »

I'm looking for a simple, bare-bones solution for DIing the bass guitar and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. All we need is some compression and minimal EQ, preferably coupled with a DI box in one unit. The modelers and multi-effects units are a bit more than our bass player will ever use/need. Any suggestions?

I have one of these
http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-V-tone- ... B000M58PJQ

Its not the most amazing unit out there, but its dirt cheap, and the amp modeling is not terrible.

I use it for a little distortion some times.
Stand back, I like to rock out.

The Countryman's pretty much the industry standard. I've heard good things about the Radials.

If you want some EQing, check into Aguilar's Tonehammer.

I have a Whirlwind Director that's 20 years old, sounds great, and has never pooped the bed. Believe it or not, it was run over by a load-in truck once, got a dent in the case, but still works perfectly!

Put a Di box at the end of your chain and tap it there. Has always worked good for me recording......

I haven't used that pedal, but I'm a big fan of Eden products. I'm sure it would be awesome.

If you want more of an SVT sound (which would be very diffent than the Eden), Tech 21 has put out the VT pedal. I haven't actually tried the VT, but, to my ears, it sounds much better than the SansAmp Bass Drivers Tech 21 puts out.

MXR has a MX 80 Bass DI with distortion channel built in (which can be switched in/out). It has a noise gate, 3 band EQ, and phantom power, plus parallel outs. They run about $140 new. Never tried one, but it looks pretty cool and MXR has always made decent stuff.

IMO there are only one of three Brands of DI's you should be looking at and it kind of depends on the type of bass you have.

If you have an active bass, and that's all you'll ever play, I recommend a Radial JDI, period. It uses a Jensen transformer and they are the best money can by. By once, cry once, you'll never need another DI again.

If you have a passive bass, then I'd recommend the Countryman Type85 or Type 10. Another great choice is the BSS AR133.

The advantage of the BSS and the Type 10 are that they have -15 and -30 dB pads and can also be used with active basses. Avoid using the Type85 with an active bass. You can easily clip the front end of a Type85 with an active bass and the pad (Speaker level setting) is like -50dB.

If you can get only one, I'd recommend the AR133.

The Type 85 Type 10 and AR133 all need a battery or phantom power.
