I ordered a Paul Reed Smith Se Santana in Black from guitar center today. It is on back order and won't ship till the 15th, they said I should have it by the 20th or 21st.

Should play really nice and I like how they arranged the controls better than the American version. I like to joke that I'd buy a Santana model, except some Mexican screwed up the controls layout...lol.

I think I am going to like it. I was playing a PRS over at Rainbow music the last time I was there; I liked it a lot.

@Jeff - I do like the wide necks. They feel more comfortable than the tight ones. Plus I find it easier for me to play the wider ones.

@Charltor - This is a SE model. It doesn't have the santana pickups in it. However, I am going to see how the ones that are with it sound now. If I don't like them, I will be switching them out.

This is a mahogany body guitar, so it should, for me sound really good. I always loved the sound of a mahogany body. In all, I will probably love this guitar, I can't wait to get it into my hands.

All I have to do now is decide on what processor and amp I want. If it turns out like this, it will take me a while. I kept going back and forth between this and a Fender Strat. I finally decided on this.

Yes, I like the wide necks too...it was the "fat" part I was wondering about. I like the wide thin neck....of course, if I'd have had a "fat" neck on my Mira Korina, the cat might not have been able to crack it like he did.

When you see "PRS Designed" it means "made in Korea". This happens to be the Korean Santana pickups...they make a Korean "HFS" & "VB" too, but none of them are close to the US counterparts. The "PRS Designed" hardware is pretty good, though. Its metric rather than SAE. As far as I know, none of the Korean tuners the locking type.

SE stands for "Student Edition"

Yeah, the specs say SE Santana humbucker, but they aren't the "Real" ones. Like I said; if I don't like them I will switch them out.

@Jeff - the fat necks aren't that bad. They conform around my hand better.

All around, I think this is a pretty sweet guitar. I love the color, and the bird inlays are really cool also. I especially like that it is a mahogany body and it won't weigh as much as a Les Paul, at least I hope it doesn't lol. Either way, I am stoked

Its basically a 7 pound Les Paul Korina (Gibson only made a limited number of Les Paul Korinas). Another plus is that it doesn't have a DEtuning wanker yanker...PRS vibratos really suck and I wish I could find a Custom 24 Hardtail.

Korina is similar to mahogany, but lighter and more robust sounding. Most companies reserve it for limited edition runs.

You might want to save yourself a hundred bucks (or more if you buy them from an authorized dealer on eBay).

Never buy a guitar just because some guy's name is on it.

I saw that advertised recently... man I like the PRS stuff. The one Lonewolf had on here recently was right up my alley, looks-wise and feature-wise, though it'd be hard to justify getting one while playing acoustic music.
I actually met they guy whose name is on the headstock, many years ago, and I'd probably buy a guitar based simply on that. He had really, really good design ideas, his dedication to quality was obvious, and he seemed like a hell of a good businessman. I wish I could have bought the bass he showed me. It'd be worth a lot now, as far as I know, it never went into production. Sadly, world-class handmade instruments are still mostly out of my price-range.

I decided that, with this guitar, I am going to switch to 10's in the string department.

Oh, dude, I remember when I went from .009's to .010's... back then, metal guys mostly used 9's, and blues guys used 10's.
It was like hitting puberty, suddenly my voice was deeper and louder. There was just MORE of everything.
I still use extra-lights on acoustic, though, but only to keep tendonitis at bay, and save my fingertips on 3-hour solo acoustic gigs. Those used to demolish my fingers.

I don't know what it is anymore, but 9's just seem too small. I also like the sound you get from 10's better. Although the the tension on the neck is going to be increased and the bending isn't going to be as easy. But at least they should feel better on my fingers.

nice choice! i listened to a few demos on this guitar about a month ago, sounded pretty good. (said it was the stock pups - who knows)

either way - great buy.

and about those 10's .... try bending 12's
