Does anyone remember the album from an entity called the "Make a Difference Foundation" called "Stairway to Heaven/Highway to Hell", which featured covers done by various bands, with the covers all being songs from bands that had members who died of an OD? It featured Ozzy doing 'Purple Haze', Motley Crue doing Tommy Bolin's 'Teaser', Cinderella doing Janis Joplin's 'Move Over', along with a host of others. Damn I wish I still had this in my collection! I think it came out around '89/90-ish.
Another good one I remember was "Concert for the People of Kampuchia" (I'm sure I spelled that wrong ) The thing I remember most about that one was Robert Plant doing "Little Sister". I'd say it was from around '80 or '81.
Anyone else have any favorite compilation or benefit concert albums they can think of?
The Blackened compilations are really cool. They contain all black metal from various bands like Emporer, Old Man's Child, older Opeth, Hecate Enthroned, etc. Those two discs kick my ass daily.
I really dig the N.I.B. volumes 1 & 2....It's cool to see modern metal bands paying tribute to the father's of metal....
Another compilation that comes to mind is one simply called "Metalmania", although some of what was on it wasn't quite what everyone would call 'metal'. But then again, I think it came out in the very early 80's.
Anyway, it's most memorable to me due to it having the elusive rock tribute song "In the Beginning" by a band called "Heaven". Cool stuff.
"In The Beginning" was a great old-school metal song, and great marketing... it had pieces of other rock & metal songs woven into it, and put the band on the map. I also liked their version of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door."
In the early 80's, metal compilations were all the rage with guys like me... it was the only way to hear a lot of stuff, especially European import stuff. My friend, Mark Morningstar used to manage the record department at Miller's in Huntingdon, and cut a deal with Important Distributors, Inc., and some other folks like Metal Blade Records, and we'd buy anything that even looked like metal on the album cover. I heard some really good stuff on those compilations. Shrapnel used to put out some good comp's, too. I spoke to Mike Varney on the phone once, and he was the real deal... without him, shred probably wouldn't exist.------->JMS
