Hackintosh

Post by hicksjd9 »

Hey guys,

If you haven't heard, you can build your own mac for about 1/4 to 1/3 the price of a real mac. Check out this site:

http://lifehacker.com/5351485/how-to-bu ... -to-finish

You can substitute a slower processor (I used a Q8400 and OC'd it to 3.2 ghz and I also used a fanless 9500 for my video card without a hitch).

I've been running mine for about 6 months now. Got a SSD with the money I saved and I'm using it for recording. It works beautifully and saved be about $2200 off a comparable mac pro. I have a dead silent rocketship for recording now. It's a beauty and it's unbelieveably stable.

If anyone decides to do this and needs help, I'm willing to guide you through the process or help you build it.

You've actually been able to build a mac for a long time, except it was hard to get parts and unless you were around the old macs for years (like learned on a PPC or even old fatmacs), you would have had trouble.

This is definately kewl tho, <3 Mac. <3 *Nix.

HIJACK(sorta): Since mac is running intel nowadays, this mean you can push *nix on an apple? Can't afford one to test.
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

The difference between this build and a lot of the old builds is that this uses a vanilla kernal (meaning 100% normal snow leopard installation) and can update just like a real mac. In essence, it is no different than going out and buying a 3000 mac for a quarter of the price. And with this, you don't have to buy a computer that is all in one. I HATE things that are all in one, like tv/vcr combos. When one goes, they both go. Not cool.

The legality of this is dubious at best.

The legality is just fine as long as you pay for what you have. There is nothing illegal about a hackintosh and the only way you would run into trouble is if you started selling them to make a living. My insallation uses the acutal Snow Leopard Mac setup disk that I bought from Apple, not some hacked up version downloaded from the net like you used to see with the old hackintoshes.

I don't plan on selling these or making anything off of them, it was just an offer to help people to get into the world of macs at a quarter of the price. Thought it might be a fun way to hang out and get to know fellow rockpagers.

I've been making machines do things they aren't supposed to do for years. It's a great hobby. In this case, it's a great way to afford something that you couldn't otherwise.

do you have the snow leopard upgrade disk? If so, you've made an illegal copy. It is only valid for an upgrade, not a full install.

Even the fully licensed product has language in the EULA that prevents installation on anything other than Apple hardware.

Look, man. This is about as illegal as copying a movie that you already own. I have another mac. If you don't like this, that's fine, but please stop trolling on this thread. This thread isn't here to be a discussion about gray areas in computing. I just wanted to offer my help to others who might want to try something fun and out of the ordinary. Yes I did purchase the disk. The wording says that the software shouldn't be run on a machine not badged by apple, well, I put an apple sticker on it. Legal.

You've made your point. People can make their own decisions. There are lots of sites and forums dedicated specifically to building hackintoshes. The information is out there, whether I help someone understand the process or not.

Why does an argument always have to break out on every thread on this site.

Geez!
