Peter Steele R.I.P.?

Post by Jim Price »

Unconfirmed rumors have been circulating during the past several hours that Type O Negative singer Peter Steele passed away Wednesday from heart failure. Here is the latest from Blabbermouth.net; a number of other metal-related websites are reporting the rumor as well:

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbe ... mID=138511

A similar rumor about Steele circulated in 2005 after a gravestone indicating his passing appeared on the group's website; it turned out to be false. The group has done practical jokes on some of their CD's. But the general buzz on the internet suggests that this might be the real thing.

That is what I am seeing as well. It sounds like another rumor at this point. I would think that if it did happen, there would be news media on it and such. I will take it as such till more facts comes out ..

Wikipedia also confirms it. That sucks. RIP :(

I wonder if drugs were involved? He did have a history of drug use and anti-depressants. I also wonder if it could have been suicide? His history would show that. Of course, it is just speculations on my end, so take it as such ...

IM SO FUCKING SAD.....

Rip on me if you want...but Peter Steele will always be a huge influence for me. I love his songwriting, his personality and his voice. His music will always be my favorite stuff. I loved how he could make amazing music, but then be as real as anyone else out there. He had depression/ social anxiety issues (among others) that made him very human to me. He never put on a rockstar attitude. He was funny as hell also. I am thankful to have met him once and to have seen the band 6 times.

RIP Brother. I will see you in heaven.

We're assuming "Heaven" is real anyway.
During the past few years, Peter rediscovered his faith. Since every Religion thinks they have their "Own GOD", lets for the sake of this argument say that that there is ONE GOD and we/they all worship him...Just in different ways.
Peter's family's religion was Catholic. Im sure everyone (including Catholics) can bash that religion, but lets not turn this into a religious debate. So anyway, he began to trust in GOD to help him through his life problems. Type O Negative's last record was FULL of PRO Faith/Religion/God ideas and words. It was refreshing to know that someone like him/me/others can sometimes break through the things that have plagued them for years. He found happiness for a while. Of course he fell a few times, but the last video interview I saw of him was amazing. He was in a great mindset and really had it together. He looked in great health, and not like he has the past 8 years or so. After I saw that interview, I was so excited. He had a fire in him that he hasnt have in a while. He knew what had to be done. I can only imagine what his new songs sound like.

Im devastated. This is something I was not prepared for. I was hoping he would last forever. Him & Type O Negative were so unique. Months ago, Josh Silver left the band because of Peter's issues. Peter knew he fucked up, and was aiming to repair what damage was done. Great things were on the horizon for Type O Negative. "Its like a death in the family"
Too soon Peter...too soon.

There is always the chance its a hoax...and if it is, ill prob go to brooklyn and kick his ass.

Just a site note, their forum opened back up today, as it was closed apparently because of the shit that followed the news. anyway, a new thread was posted from the site admin saying this:
Hi,

We have opened the boards back up. Please play nice and there will be statements released later today from the band and Peter's family.

Thanks guys.

To me, that says TRUE all over it.

Apparent Heart Failure was the cause of death. Not a fan of Type O but I loved Carnivore back in the day. And little know fact that he pretty much wrote all the music for Agnostic Front's Cause For Alarm album and he wasn't even in the band.
R.I.P. Pete

While one of their songs, Green Man, was about Wicca, Peter was an atheist for quite a while. Within the past couple of years, he became born again, as Keith pointed out.

I love Type O Negative, especially since they are a band that truly has its own all around indentity, which is quite nice in a music industry where all of the artists sound the same, write the same, and look the same. October Rust is in my personal top three favorite albums of all time. I really came to appreciate Peter's bass playing, especially since it was integral to Type O's sound. His bass sound was centered around this discontinued Peavey preamp. It's not a bass sound that I'd go for, but it was really important for what they did. And who could deny that he could sound like a vampire with his vocals without it sounding cheesy?
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM BAND AND HIS FAMILY:

TYPE O NEGATIVE members Josh Silver (keyboards), Kenny Hickey (guitar) and Johnny Kelly (drums) have released the following joint statement:

"It is with great sadness that we inform you that TYPE O NEGATIVE front man, bassist, and our band mate, Peter Steele, passed away last night of what appears to be heart failure.

"Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music for our follow-up to 'Dead Again', released in 2007.

"The official cause of death has yet to be determined pending autopsy results.

"The funeral services will be private and memorial services will be announced at a future date.

"We'd like to share our thoughts and those of Peter's family below.

"We are truly saddened to lose our friend and appreciate the tremendous outpouring today from around the world."

Separate statements from TYPE O NEGATIVE members:

Josh Silver (keyboards): "Peter, my endless source of frustration, (as I'm yours), you have really done it this time. You have changed and touched countless lives through music, comedy and often brutal honesty. You've made life both interesting and irritating and I could not imagine not having known you for 37 years.

"It still isn't true in my mind, but in time I will miss you and the creating that we all endured together. We certainly disagreed constantly and I believe (and hope) we all learned from each other.

"Should I call you my brother, friend or neighbor? I can only call you Peter (and usually after 2 p.m).

"We laughed at ourselves more times then I can count. Knowing humans are preposterous creatures and I know we reveled in that fact.

"I will miss you in time, but at this moment your premature departure seems surreal and has pissed me off to no end.

"Though I never told you that I harbor a deep respect for you, I do.

"Goodbye my friend."

Kenny Hickey (guitar): "Peter Steele was one of the most brilliant and funny personalities in music and it was all for real. Half the time people thought he was joking, but he was actually telling the truth. Part of me died with him."

Johnny Kelly (drums): "It's impossible for me to put into a few sentences what I am feeling at the moment, Peter.

"I'm not sure if I should eulogize or roast you.

"Both good and bad, we went on one hell of a ride together and sadly, the ride has come to an end.

"You truly were a unique person. Your music touched many people. Myself included. Whether it was talking about THE BEATLES, power tools, how Pluto was no longer considered a planet or calling me at 3 a.m. asking me to drive to your house to have a fistfight with you, you always kept it interesting.

"It was a privilege to have been your bandmate. It's something that I will always cherish."

A statement issued today by Steele's family:

"Legendary goth/heavy metal musician Peter Steele died suddenly Wednesday, April 14, 2010, after a short illness at the age of 48. He wrote and orchestrated the music for the Brooklyn-based band TYPE O NEGATIVE, a groundbreaking group known for its dramatic lyrical emphasis on the themes of romance, depression, and death. Steele, renowned as much for his striking physical appearance as his musical talent, was the creative force behind the bands 20-year success writing most of the material for the their albums.

"TYPE O NEGATIVE and Steele have been lauded as a major influence by numerous alternative and metal bands. The band gained a worldwide following through touring and recording seven studio albums, two best-of compilations, concert DVDs and music videos. Their 1993 album, 'Bloody Kisses', went platinum, and the 1996 follow-up, 'October Rust', went gold.

"The music world has lost a great talent, and music fans worldwide are mourning, but for our family we are mourning a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, friend and funny man.

"Peter Steele was a complex man, known for his brooding looks, his self-deprecating sense of humor, unique view of the world, and most of all his loyalty to his fans, friends and family. Survived by five sisters, the eldest living sister notes that he was more than our brother, he was our son. His untimely death is tragic — a great loss to us and to music.

"The official cause of death has yet to be determined pending autopsy results, and funeral plans at present remain unknown.

"The family thanks fans for their loyalty to Peter and band members, but request that fans and media respect their wishes for privacy.

cool pic Keith! Dime must have needed a bass player....... :(

I had seen them 8 times over the years. One of the best shows was at Crowbar during the October Rust tour, standing 3 feet from them getting hit with the stage volume and being in one of the wickedest pits ever during "Kill All the White People". One of my favorite bands of all time.

Cheesy as it may sound, I think that "Everything Dies" is sonically perfect. It's probably my favorite all time song. It's so....thick and lush...and very powerful, yet delicate at the same time. That song brings tears to my eyes when I listen to it. Never was a "huge" fan of TON, but Peter deserved better than this end. I was looking forward to the new record.

I met Peter twice, and he was very nice. He will be missed. TON was and is one of my favorite bands. I remember singing Black #1 in my old band Blackout, people really dug that song.

R.I.P. Peter
