You can put a cover on a pickup. I have done this before. You will have to raise the screws on your pickup so that they protrude through the top of the cover. To attach the covers, most people solder the bottom edge to the plate on the pickup.

I do tend to prefer the sound of uncovered pickups though.

Yes. In addition to the above, you might want to consider getting wax beads, melting them in a pot and dipping the pickup in wax to "pot" it. Its a little safer to "double boil" the pot with wax in another pot with boiling water.

This will eliminate microphonics that will cause it to feedback even at lower levels than you would expect.

Also, keep in mind that I might have a JB/Jazz nickel cover set for sale in the near future. I just put them on my new Mira Korina and the jury is still out on that combination. I'm thinking that a hot PAF set would work better on korina.

I have a gold Stewart-MacDonald Golden Age Overwound PAF that you can have for $25. For a PAF sound, they are as good or better than any of the sub $100 Dimarzio or Duncan PAF clones.

Its hotter than most PAF clones--it measures 11.8K, has 2 conductor & ground for coil split. They use Alnico 5 magnets. There are a few scratches--its not new, but it looks nice.

If it was nickel, I'd keep it and use it, but I don't have anything that needs gold hardware.

If you mean the bobbins, no...the cover should fit over top. Be careful too...not all covers fit all pickups. There are subtle differences between a lot of brands.

One more thing about putting a gold cover on an uncovered pickup. Take a look at the adjustable pole pieces. I'll bet they are nickel or chrome. If you put a gold cover on it, they will stand out like sore thumbs. Gold pickups have gold adjustable pole pieces.
